My Logos 5 program is very slow

It would be helpful for you to post logs. I'm on my iPad and will have to grab the wiki link for you in a minute. Can you describe what you are doing when this happens? Have you tried a blank layout? What OS are you running?

I am using OSX 10.8.2

This happens when I open any part of Logos 5. When I open any guide or go from one guide to another - the arrow turns to a spinning circle.

I have not tried a blank layout (does that mean just a blank page).

Right now I have 5 windows: on the left is giude information; next is two windows on top of each other: The Scripture I;m using over a window for whatever I click on from the guide; then next - I have two windows one on top of the other - on top is dictionary, and on the bottom is different versions of the Bible.

Yes… but to OPEN to a blank layout: press and hold the command key immediately upon startup of the app. Check the appropriate box.

It doesn't sound like the layout is the issue, but you never know and opening to a blank layout is the simplest thing to try. If that doesn't work, please follow the link above to learn about logging. That is the only way for the techies to really know what is going on.

Opening to a blank layout is an attempt to isolate the problem, especially if the issue is resource or layout oriented. In other words, if you open to a blank layout and everything is OK, slowly start opening things to see if you can determine the issue. Since you think that the issue has been helped only "some," I would submit logs.

enable logging
recreate the problem
grab the logs
submit them in the forum by using the paperclip icon in the formatting pallet.

If you are using a few "link sets", this can cause issues.

If you have the reverse interliniear open, this can cause issues as well.

If you have everything as default in the passage guides, this can cause issues . ( some of those are connected to "outside resources which are being searched through internet connection).

One option is posting a screen shot of layout in use. From description, guessing that a number of tabs are linked together so changing verse location in one tab causes all the others to update, even though the updated results may not be visible on screen.

For guide information, curious how many sections are open ? If guide(s) are linked, then changing verse location causes all open sections to update with results that are not on screen until want to scroll in the guide.

Personally have learned having less open is more responsive along with knowing how to quickly open more resources, guides, tools, etc as desired; try to avoid updating lots of stuff that is not on screen.

I realize this is a rather "old" thread, but in doing a search for Logos5 being slow this is what I found and I think it is not MAC related.

It takes forever, that's exaggerated I know, but it takes a long time when I simply click on Layouts for Layout to open. Or, if I click on Search, or any other resource I may want to use. I would expect other than a complex search resource windows would open almost immediately.

Any ideas what might be my problem. Here is my computer system:

I would expect other than a complex search resource windows would open almost immediately.

Layouts can take a while to open… but I think your problem may be ram related. I would recommend upgrading to at least 8GB.

Alabama might be right if it were a Mac. But Ram is likely not your main bottleneck in my opinion. Even though you are running a 64-bit Operating system. Logos is only a 32 -bit program. The Dell Inspiron line is not known for great graphics cards so a lack of discrete graphics card or a slow Hard Drive (5400 RPM) are more likely your bottlenecks in this situation.

I agree with both Alabama and David on all that they said. Plus 5 GB of RAM instead of 4 GB does make some difference.

I'm using Windows 7 on two laptops with different specs. I just cleaned the newer laptop (Logos still runs faster on the older laptop because it has SSD) with Malwarebytes.com and noticed quite an increase in speed. On the older laptop I don't have any antivirus (it would slow down as it has a latter-half-of-2009 Core 2 Duo CPU), on the newer I have Microsoft Security Essentials and it has found a virus or trojan only once during the time I have used it (a few weeks). This newer computer was infected with malware because it had been used for games and scareware/utilities by the previous owner. This newer computer has only 1.6 GB RAM available so I'm unable to update to L5, but it's expandable to 7.6 GB available:

I would recommend upgrading to at least 8GB.

But Ram is likely not your main bottleneck in my opinion.

I've had this problem for a while now... a LONG while. And I finally decided to try and do something about it. The main motivation factor was watching some of the Practicum videos. There, everything seems to work very quickly.

Logos 5 (Verbum for me) is crazy slow. Insanely slow. It's slow opening the program, it's slow starting a passage guide from the Go box. It's slow opening the library. It's slow opening a single book from the library. Everything about it slow.

Why? What can be done about it? I'm in the process of trying a complete index re-build.

I've got about 3'500 resources. MacBookPro 2.8GHz intel core i7, 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Ram.

Bost your memory to 8GB it will help a lot. Also is your MBP using a conventional HD or SSD, the solid state drive makes all the difference with logos I find.

The index is now rebuilt. The computer was off all night, as it usually is. I started it up this morning and reset the P-RAM. Started Logos, holding the cmd key, as I've seen elsewhere, and used a blank layout. Seemed to start just fine. Then I clicked the home icon, and the same thing. The home screen takes a long time to load. Perhaps shorter than before.

I just tried opening a saved layout. Not fast, but seems quicker than before. Perhaps the index rebuild was a good idea.

But I'm certainly opening, and hoping for other suggestions. If there are any!

in reading the above posts by Dan and Jack, I rather thought they advised going for a SSD more than buying additional RAM. Of course, doing both is potentially best, but you already have 4GB and a fast processor.

I come from a very different corner than you - slow Windows PC instead of fast Mac - thus take my advice with some more grains of salt (i.e. more like you're securing the driveway in frost than like you're eating scambled eggs). That said: upgrading my HD to a SSD has really done wonders for me. I can work on my machine even while it is indexing - which was absolutely impossible before.

You can read a lot of experiences here in the forums, many from Mac users, and all share the same. So if you were to put $200 onto some hardware, make it a SSD - I'm not even sure if 8GB instead of 4GB really gives much improvement other than keeping non-Logos apps from eating memory Logos could use.

For anyone else who has this issue, re-booting your mac with CMD-R, and running a disk repair is also a fabulous thing to try!

It has to do with "all" your guides. Each section has to be collapsed, except for one specific area on each one.

Also in your "program preference", you'll need to to set both the Show Bookmarks (both) and Show Notification Bar to "NO".

Also turn off Play Sounds.

I'm reading about how most people are suggesting to upgrade RAM or switch to a SSD, but I really don't think this is a hardware issue.

Whenever I open up Logos, it takes maybe 30 seconds to load, and then there is a couple second delay when opening the library, opening a book, or even turning on the Greek Lexicon. My Mac is running OS 10.9 and I have 16 gigs of RAM with a quad-core i7 and an SSD, so my machine is fully upgraded. Yet, I have numerous friends who use Logos with only 4 gigs of ram and an i5 and it runs flawlessly.

All that to say that upgrading your machine may help a little, but there is definitely a software issue.

I would have to agree that it could be OS 10.9[:(] because Logos definitely responds to an SSD and an i7, and is relatively impervious to RAM over 4 GB (being 32-bit the extra RAM benefits multi-tasking). If not OS 10.9 then it has to be hardware/motherboard/RAM timing. I have 4 GB, SSD, first generation i5 and Logos loads faster than your machine with imperceptible lag when opening resource panels or Library.

I totally agree with Jared and Dave. I have a PC and a tablet, both with W8.1, I installed Logos on both (not the app). My PC has an i5 and my tablet has an Atom processor, and my tablet is surprising in its speed compared to my i5 while both are very slow in general.

Create a new thread.
Explain your issue.
Give appropriate details (including app version, os, computer specs, etc.)

Logos, on any platform, is not a speed demon to start with. Obviously people don't buy it for speed but for the books and the value-add of the platform.
Logos Mac suffers in relation to Logos Windows because Logos is, essentially, a Windows app ported to OS X using a extra (performance affecting) translation layer. Mac users don't like it but... see point 1.
On a reasonably modern platform Logos performance should be acceptable, but again not blazingly fast.
Logos does not — yet — take full (some would say proper) advantage of CPU and/or Mac specific technologies, it is only a 32 bit application on both Windows and the Mac. But Logos say things are changing.
If you want more performance from Logos the single most effective thing you can do is speed up your hard disk (disk access speed), and the best way to do that is to use an SSD drive.

64-bit is coming in version 5.3 (probably in a few months).

There are things you can do to speed Logos up. On your spec machine it shouldn't be slow (although as others have said, it will probably never be fast). If you want specific help in speeding things up, start a new thread and explain what you find particuarly slow. There may be some simple configuration/behaviour changes that you could implement.

There are all sorts of little things that can slow down Logos, for example linking between panels, visual filters, leaving the information tool open, etc. Then there's little things we can do to speed things up, such as creating custom guides that exclude sections we don't use. I don't think there's a golden bullet for you, but it's possible that slightly changing how you use Logos might give you some small speed increases.

I think the developers would say that it's not a port, but rather than both applications share much of the same code. I'm sure there will continue to be platform-specific optimisations in the future.

Could you give us some idea as to the types of layouts you are using? Sometimes, it is not the features, but the way they are used that slows Logos. Personally, I have found L5 Mac to be much more responsive than L4.

Jack, My basic layout is one version of the Bible on half the screen, a second version of the Bible on the second half... Sometimes I will have a second tab open with a text comparison, rarely do I use the inline features but sometimes I do... At the most basic level, two Bibles open and following each other, it is slow and it is doing less than Accordance is or Olive tree. The other programs are doing more actually if I look closely... I really cannot upgrade my machine any higher and I use much more processor intensive programs on a daily basis and yet Logos has the most trouble out of them all.

Is the software indexing? Even my slow machine with a Dual core processor and 4 GB of ram can handle that with the blink of an eye.

Hi guys, I am an electrical engineer, I have studied computer programing, networking, and have run computers and networks on large scales. Computers are nothing new to me and I use them on a daily basis with programs such as Photoshop which are processor intense. Logos is not indexing while running so that is not the problem, simple functions are slow and there a sluggishness that exists within the program. I am not looking for people to try fix my computer as it is running at optimal levels with a new install of the OS, a fresh install of Logos 5 and my gold library downloaded and indexed, all updates to the program installed and multiple features turned off to make it run at a reasonable speed.
On a second note, if I have to turn off features because they are too overwhelming to the machine then why were they ever released before being ready to work within the system at a optimal speed. I posted to this forum so that developers could see that there are issues with their program and that hopefully the thread would allow some insight to them on the uses of the program. I started using Logos in Seminary several years ago and have continued to use it and this has been an ongoing thing for several years with various machines that I have had and systems, I have just not said anything for that whole time. Though I appreciate all the input that each person has said.
