Best least expensive always useful Logos Bible commentary?

Hi, everyone.
Baptist Mdiv Divinity School student seeking low cost commentary set that is useful for study and sermon prep, and low cost. I have the Silver version of 5.0 but find that I need something useful like Zondervan Ilustrated (which is kinda pricey) for future sermon prep and work. So many of the commentaries seem expensive on Logos (like NIV commentary) and not many seem geared for the beginning Student or future Pastor. Also, this one The Expositor's Bible Commentary (EBC) (12 vols.) seems to be scanned, faded, and crooked (so avoiding it) Thanks for your input. God bless your day.

Joshua, have you looked at New American Commentary? It is included in Silver, and I find it quite useful. It is in my top commentaries. Word Biblical Commentary http://www.logos.com/product/8006/word-biblical-commentary is quite good. As a student you may be able to get academic discount (not sure) and pay over time.
If you decide to go with Word, watch out for specials. I got it when it was a part of this collection http://www.logos.com/product/9653/nelson-bible-reference-bundle for about six or seven hundred dollars. Paid for it on using monthly installment.

Thanks Lynden. God bless your day.

Joshua,
EBC would be a great addition. Also, I figured a screen shot my persuade your decision. The samples on the product page are not what you get with the Logos version.

Mr. Knight, you are so right. So much cleaner than the samples. I wonder if Logos knows the sample pages deter people from buying.
Thanks.

I second the recommendation of the New American Commentary. Also, the very best inexpensive commentary set which includes both OT and NT is the Tyndale set.

+1 for NAC, however if you have the Logos 5 Silver base pack, then you should already have this commentary set in your library.
If you are looking for alternatives, the Tyndale Commentaries (49 Vols.) seem like good value, and regularly get decent recommendations on these forums.

*EDIT - I see John beat me to this recommendation!*

I would consider the following in this order
Word ($700) - http://www.logos.com/product/8006/word-biblical-commentary
New American ($500) - http://www.logos.com/product/19001/the-new-american-commentary-series
College Press ($400) - http://www.logos.com/product/8096/the-college-press-niv-commentary-series-old-testament
(Of course there are often sales or you could call sales for a "best price" discussion)

Bruce, I bet those all are great but the Bible expressly forbids bank robbery : ) to pay for Logos books. (Joshing just a little). I know someone will benefit from your post though. Blessings / josh

Hi Joshua
I agree with others that the NAC series (in Silver) is very helpful.
You referred to use for sermon prep - the "Preaching the Word" series is one I find very useful although it doesn't cover the entire Bible.

Even Graham's suggestion of "Preaching the Word" is $450.
How much were you wanting to spend?
Of course the best "deals" always come with packages or special sales.

I'm glad you are pleased but I don't understnad your enthusiasm when Graham's recommendation is in the same price ballpark as two of my previous recommendations that you thought were too expensive.

Let's see: 1) Best; 2) Least Expensive; 3) Always useful
I think you're only allowed to pick 2 of those. [;)]
Reminded me of a joke (for all I know it's a true story) about a guy with a repair shop. Behind the counter was a sign. On the top line was "Fast, Done Right, Cheap" on the second line was "Pick Two"
Okay, seriously, I think a lot of what has been mentioned is fairly inexpensive considering the number of volumes you're getting. If you're wanting something less than $100 you're probably looking at a 1 volume commentary, a NT (only - and brief) commentary set, or a legacy commentary like Matthew Henry. Bible Knowledge isn't bad, but then the FSB is pretty good too, and it's free.
I guess you should decide how much you can spend, or, (how I would do it - and therefore recommend) decide what I needed and save up for it; make due with the sem library until then.

I think your requirements are reasonable. I do not think that one would necessarily need more "advanced" or technical commentaries. A lot would depend on your pastoring and preaching style.
Many of the old, non-technical commentaries are good, with much to learn from.

If money is limiting you, maybe a set would be the wrong way to go. Decide upon a book that you want to preach from and start from there.[:D]

Joshua,
Are you signed up for Logos academic discount program?
I would also recommend you pick up the IVP Essentials Collection.
It has many great resources, including a solid background commentary!

Thanks Josh. (for others) I start with a book of the Bible always (commentaries are fillers if needed).

New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge is the best Bible commentary you can get and it will always be useful. [8-|]

You could also try the Analytical Bible Expositor (a more indepth alliterated "outline Bible") by John G. Butler. He has few comments and great alliterated outlines for every chapter of the Bible. New Testament is complete, the Old Testament is still a work in progress. See sample below:

I was surprised at how good this commentary was when i actually used it. Even though it isn't long it comes to the point quickly and often is spot on from my perspective. I highly recommend it too.

I think this one fit well for the best one comparing to price, least expensive, and always useful
The Expositor's Bible Commentary (EBC) (12 vols.)
Otherwise, IHMO you have to stick with one volume

One Item not yet mentioned which i think should be considered is http://www.logos.com/product/8579/the-preachers-commentary it is same price as EBC and offers a lot, sermon outlines, illustrations, and solid commentary. It is not overly expository, but covers most information you might want to explore. Some of the illustrations can be dated but it is a very good value for the 35 volumes. It also feels to me to have a nice devotional quality about it usually.

Young baptist pastor, and seminarian here my self (academic discount is fantastic by the way!).
Just downloaded the EBC, and from what I've read (on 1 kings 17) I like it so far. It also comes highly recommended by Danny Akin of SEBTS.L2 lvl4 (...) WORDsearch, all the way through L10,

Great job everyone. I dont do original language studies but I do like commentaries.

+1 on the Tyndale OT and NT series. I have lots and lots of commentary sets, but this one seems to have a really nice balance. Not too much, not too little.

I use EBC for most personal and class studies. It is where I always turn to first. But Preacher's is great for illustration purposes.

My cup runneth over...thanks everyone. My Pastor says he rarely uses commentaries but I am playing catchup at 51 as a freshman in Divinity School so they help a lot. God bless you all. God be glorified....Jesus Lead On!
