Working with Q Texts

Ruben Gomez posted a helpful tutorial today on how to work with the so-called Q text in Bibleworks and Accorance.

Naturally I wanted to see how I could accomplish the same tasks in Logos 4.

I was easily able to create a custom Reference range by pasting the list of references and saving it as Q.

Here is a text file of the ranges used by Ruben cleaned up a bit by me. Note that I haven't checked this completely for accuracy since I am more interested in testing the functionality of Logos right now. I got this list from the Forum post on Bibleworks referenced by Ruben's post. He says they are taken from Robert J. Miller's The Complete Gospels.

Logos was able to accept the complete list of verses so it is very easy to limit one's search to the so-called Q texts in whatever version you choose. Very good.

One thing I can't figure out is how to apply a visual filter to highlight all the Q verses. I was able to apply filters to various elements within the range I created but I could not figure out how to simply get Logos to highlight all the verses in that range. I'm sure there is a command but I have yet to find it.

Anyone have any suggestions for how to accomplish that?

What I would like to do is to highlight all the verses in the custom range that I have defined as Q using a Visual Filter.

I have not found a query for the Find field that will apply the filter to all the verses in the range.

Will the Visual Filter do this? Is there a better way to do this?

Also, does anyone know of a way to easily exclude a search range from a search?
In other words, is it possible to search all the verses except the verses contained in the Q reference range?
I can't seem to find a way to do this either?

Still haven't figured out how to . . .

1. Exclude the defined range from a search. I want to search all of Matthew and Luke except for the verses defined as Q in the custom range.

2. Set up a visual filter to highlight all of the verses in the custom range.

I'm sure Logos can do these two things, I just don't know how to do it yet.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

I don't have L3 installed. I dropped it a while back when Mac 1.1 became stable.

I am reinstalling L3 to see how it works with this. Maybe that will help me figure out more about L4.

I never have learned Logos search syntax very well. I have typically used Bibleworks or Accordance for complicated biblical searches.

Hence, my need for much help when attempting to use L4 for these types of things.

I am hoping that L4 eventually becomes the only Bible software that I need.

What document on search syntax do you have? Is that part of the L3 help system?

I have a L3 Search Primer. It is a few years old, but very, very valid. It is actually on my old dinasour computer in the office and isn't "on" right now so I would rather grab this thing in the morning. But, no, it isn't a part of the L3 help system. One of the power users developed it years ago and it is in MS Word format.

Do you, and anybody else interested in this topic, have Google Wave? I do and I think GW would be a fantastic platform to do collaborative search study. Just got it a week ago so I'm not very fluent in how to get around yet.

I installed L3 and played with it.

Like L4, it was very easy to simply create a custom range using the verse list I posted above and save it as Q.

In L3, though, it was also possible to easily create a Reference list using the same references.

With a Reference list, the Graphical Query Editor allows you to include or exclude those references for a search.

I am assuming that the Verse Lists that are promised in Q1 of 2010 will allow us to have some similar functionality in L4?

So, regarding the ability to exclude a custom range of verses in a search . . . apparently not presently existent in L4 but potentially coming in a future release?

Regarding my desire to apply a visual markup to all the verses in my custom range, I could not find a way to do that in either L4 or L3.

Is there a trick that I am missing that would allow that with the current visual filter?

Or are there any future enhancements of highlighting and visual filters planned that will provide that functionality?
