I am a current user of LOGOS 4 and I am in need of purchasing a new laptop. Will I be able to install my LOGOS 4 on this new computer which will have windows 8 instead of windows 7?
Like Sgt Schultz in Hogan's Heroes, "I know nothing" so get out the salt cellar, but I suspect that part of the reason for the development of L5 was Windows 8. You could easily install L5 and not lose anything. If you want, you could do the minimal crossgrade and have a few added functions.
This thread seems to say that to stay with L4 you will have to install Net 3.5 on the Win8 laptop. Using the free engine, you can keep all your L4 resources but use the new L5 interface in Win8
Yes, provided you first enable .NET 3.5 in Programs and Features.
As pointed out above, the free Logos 5 engine will install without problems on Win 8 and you could consider getting a Logos 5 Crossgrade to get some of its features. See the wiki http://wiki.logos.com/Upgrade_or_Crossgrade for more details.
I just did this today. I started by reading through this article: http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers.
However, I ended up using a fourth method because I wanted to download all my resources from Logos rather than copy them from my old laptop (I’ve had Logos for a long time and am sure I have duplicate resources). It took less than an hour to download my approx.6 GB of resources and then another hour or so to index.
Seems like I'm a little late to the party, but I can confirm Logos 4 and Logos 5 are both compatible with and supported on Windows 8.
Logos 4 uses .NET 3.5.1 and Logos 5 uses .NET 4.5.
Windows 8 ships with .NET 4.0, but Logos Setup will detect if a .NET framework is missing and install whichever version is necessary, depending on which version of Logos you are using. This should be a smooth, automatic process.
On a side note, Logos is not compatible with Windows 8 "RT" or "Modern UI" for Windows 8 tablets (tablets not running the "Pro" version with the full desktop UI, like Microsoft's Surface).

This is essentially a normal installation except you may have chosen a custom path for the files.

Logos 4/5 doesn't allow duplicate resources. Libronix would allow you to install the same resource file into different folders, but Logos has only one resource folder.
EXCEPT THAT
both Logos/Libronix can have resources with the same Title but different file names! A classic of this type is The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge; one of which had to be hidden because they had essentially the same content. Another classic is different books with the title Revelation -- check this product page. All I had to do was change the title in Logos (which you can't do in Libronix) e.g. Krodel's title became Augsburg Commentary: Revelation.
Bottom line
You can have "duplicate" resources but they can't be fixed by the installation of Logos 4/5 and you can be assured that the latest version will be downloaded if necessary.
Sorry Mike, but
Installation is smooth for Logos 5, but Windows 8 likes you to first switch .NET 3.5 on (in Programs and Features) otherwise installation of Logos 4 is very rocky.
Dave, All I know is that I didn't do anything relative to .NET when I moved from my Windows 7 PC to my Windows 8 PC. I just downloaded Logos4, ran the executable, left the box checked about updates and it installed cleanly and has worked flawlessly.

Thanks Scott. I wrote that because it is not always flawless with the first installation of L4 onto Win8 if .NET 3.5 is switched off.
Thank you all for your help with this. I downloaded the new engine, unstalled, and now it is updating. It is my desire to upgrade or crossgrade to 6 as soon as I get the money to do so.
I love LOGOS and have become a better student of the Word through this program.
