This is super news. I have been writing about these books on these forums for years ... it is great to see them here. Well done Logos for listening.

These are important collection of papers. The first volume is a wide-ranging collection of papers which checks E.P. Sanders's claim that Second Temple Judaism (STJ) had a "pattern" which he called "covenantal nomism." The difficulty is that this pattern is ambiguous - it is very flexible, and as one of the papers by D.A. Carson points out, although Sanders and other New Perspective writers present it as an alternative to understanding STJ as a legalistic religion concerned with works-righteousness, it actually baptises a great deal of merit theology in its own definition. This ambiguity means that many of the writers in the first volume do find "covenantal nomism" in the corpus of writing they are considering, but the work as a whole underlines how plastic the concept is. D.A. Carson's summary chapter in the first volume (although it has been criticised for not building enough on the preceding essays) is an insightful analysis of the situation, and it worth of the price of the first volume by itself.

The second volume is a collection of papers about Paul in particular. Practically every paper is well-written, and addresses an important element of the "New Perspective on Paul" debate. In my opinion, it is difficult to remain impressed with the rhetoric of the New Perspective scholars, after seeing their various contentions dismantled with the insightful scholarship found in these essays.

Well done Logos! Now it is down to us to get them into our libraries, and their arguments into our heads.

Carson speaks highly of these volumes. If you have interest in the NPP concept, this is a MUST.

The Logos web site offers these 2 vols for about $50 Australian. The site says the normal print price is about $105.

But wait there's more .... here in Australia the $105 will buy only ONE volume. If you want both volumes you will be up for about $200.

Just in case anyone is put off by the title of these volumes, "Justification and Variegated Nomism" .... I heard Don Carson speak on the subject once .... apparently even his wife mocks him for such an obscure title!

It is hinting that there are multiple different ways that law (nomism) was related to justification in the diverse literature surviving from Judaism between the testaments. "Variegated" like a two-tone leaf.

I like the title!!

Now ... go order the pre-pub!

Does anyone know the logic of why such an "obscure title" would be chosen? It doesn't make any sense to me from a marketing perspective for it certainly would limit those who may take time to consider it.

Book titles are tricky things. I have a friend who is an academic in another discipline (computing) who co-authored a book which was an introduction to a modelling language (called VDM) ... his book title mentioned modelling but didn't mention VDM as he was trying to be general ... but all those looking for a VDM manual miss his book. He wrote another one ... and aiming to get some fairly academic stuff out into industrial practice, subtitled it "A Practictioners' Guide". This however, doesn't look so good when the department is being accessed for academic excellence, so doesn't get submitted by the University to the "research assessment" process. (We are talking the UK universities assessment process from a few years back).

The problem with "New Perspectives on Wright" as a title would have been that the first volume is mainly focused on assessing E.P. Sanders claims about Second Temple Judaism, and the second volume is as interested in understanding Paul, and assessing the claims of other New Perspective scholars, such as Standahl and Dunn, as in assessing Wright's readings of Paul.
