Moody titles will be going away

Sometime in the very near future, all Moody titles not in the public domain will be removed from Logos.com and will not be available for purchase.

This could happen as early as today.

We do not know when or if they will be coming back.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Kent can you explain in general terms why this is happening? Can we still purchase them today?

If I'm not mistaken is that  not 275 resources? That is huge!

I'm sorry; I'm not able to go into further detail.

You can still purchase them at this very moment.

This is very disappointing but thanks for the warning. There were many resources that I have not yet purchased that were on my wish list. Unfortunately I am only able to afford a few of them now which I just purchased before they are removed.

Hey Kent, I was wondering if you could tell us why this "Luke 6-10: MacArthur New Testament Commentary" was dropped off prepub after a couple of years and if it may come back?

                Thanks

I too feel like I had to jump on some MacArthur resources before they were gone at close of business today.

I also have a prepub for Classic Commentaries on Revelation, will that still go through or be taken offline?

I cannot express my concern and disappointment when two large, presumably Christian organizations, cannot come to a financial agreement, and all of us eager, anxious, and growing believers are caught in the cross-fire.  I could expect this from a Zondervan, but not from a Moody and/or Logos.  With all that is going on in the world today, in our own country as far as politics and christian "repression", are we (you) setting the right example and making it even more difficult for believers to grow in our faith and glorify God in our homes, communities, country, and culture?  What a shame that we, the PAYING  customers (and this resource is NOT cheap), are the ones who ultimately pay the price!

Welcome to the forums Steven. I sense that you felt more compelled to make a passionate statement rather than to share in our community but I hope that this will not be your last post. Please come back and visit and participate often.

Over the years I have learned that I need to be so careful at coming to conclusions that I don't really fully understand. Although many of us (including me) were very disappointed at the loss of Moody as a Logos partner I must remind myself that I don't know the full story. I don't understand why they could not work something out and hope that something will be worked out in the future. In the meantime I have chosen to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Remember that even the Apostle Paul and his mentor Barnabas couldn't agree and parted ways.

The Publisher=Moody parameter is very helpful, but is there a way to use the url parameters to exclude certain things? E.g. I already have all the MacArthur titles I need, and his individual commentaries clutter the list. Is there an easy way to do Moody but not MacArthur?

You can do "Moody books that I don't have already" by adding &unlocked=no to the end of the url. You can add that to the end of any search url to exclude books you already own.

I wish there were a way to do this in the UI of the website (they were going to add it), but it's not there yet. However it's cool that you can do it manually in the meantime.

That is very cool Rosie. How did you discover that? I will have to save that one for future searches. I totally agree with you that it would be great if this were a feature on the website.

And is there a way to see "collections" only and filter out the individual titles?

That is very cool Rosie. How did you discover that?

Someone posted it on the forums and I took note of it for future reference. It must have been revealed initially by a Logos employee, as I can't imagine anyone guessing that.

Thanks Rosie, that's a step in the right direction. There are also a couple of other authors of whom I don't own any resources that I'd still like to filter out (just didn't want to name any names). But your method brings it down to four 60-item pages, which is reasonable.

Thanks Rosie, that's a step in the right direction. There are also a couple of other authors of whom I don't own any resources that I'd still like to filter out (just didn't want to name any names).

Ah, it turns out you can filter out authors. Search for publisher:moody -author:macarthur

Subtract any other authors you want to omit using that minus sign syntax (no space between the minus and "author" nor around the colons).

Then you can add the &unlocked=no parameter manually to the end of the URL that gets generated from that search.

    "&unlocked=no"

I can't get this search string to work. Can you give me an exact example to try? Thanks

Any Moody's must-have titles before it's too late?

Any Moody's must-have titles before it's too late?

I had the same question and would love to hear what people recommend.

I already went through picking out two books that I only had paper versions but eventually wanted digital copies because I consider both of these classics:

Any Moody's must-have titles before it's too late?

Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament (Robert Laird Harris, Gleason L. Archer Jr., Bruce K. Waltke) - "monumental reference work"; one of the co-authors (in bold) was a former professor of mine who is a meticulous scholar and deeply prayerful man; I don't use this as often as some of the other lexicons, but it's one I would want to snap up if I didn't have it already

And don't forget Vyrso. I just checked there and found some interesting nuggets published by Moody.

Here one is a great autobiography that I owned already but would like to recommend to others who might have overlooked it. I know the author (he attends my parents' church) and his story of escape from Sudan and return to found a ministry there is dramatic and inspiring.

The Bible or the Axe: One Man's Dramatic Escape from Persecution in the Sudan

Any Moody's must-have titles before it's too late?

Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament

Someone may have already listed it but there are many good books this is by far the best brief lexicon for quick Hebrew study. Everyone should own this.

    -Dan

EDIT-PS: I see others mentioned it, it truly is a little good mine. If anyone is not familiar with it, it is generally seen to be the equivalent for Old Testament that Kittel One Volume is for Greek word study. It is designed for the laymen but I would bet for a busy Pastor it would still have great value.

What if we already purchased them?  Will we still have access please?

    --Panic stricken Mdiv Student--

Yes. If you own the license to these books, you will retain access. We will not take books away that you own.

Hmmm...can I buy multiple copies of a license now, store them and "transfer" them to agreeable parties in the future?

Hmmm...can I buy multiple copies of a license now, store them and "transfer" them to agreeable parties in the future?

I believe you would need to have each license under a different account. This was a practice of a few back in the Libronix days. They would buy several licenses as an "investment" and resell them at a profit. Yep, they sure did. [8-|]

I went here https://www.logos.com/user/wishlists but dont know how to tell which are the Moody Titles.  I want to buy the lower cost ones if there is a chance I may not be able to get them later.  Kent...this is very stressful.

This is a classic too...don't miss it everyone.

Disturbing news. Not good for Logos Sad

I don't think so, I think it is bad news for Moody.

The loss of John MacArthur will be huge to Logos.

"In all cases, the Church is to be judged by the Scripture, not the Scripture by the Church," John Wesley

The loss of John MacArthur will be huge to Logos.

I will not see the loss of MacArthur as a loss...just my personal opinion...in fact, going through all the Moody offerings, the only things I may have purchased in the future that I don't have, are the Intoduction to Old Testament series.  I'm hopeful that others can come on board and replace them post haste...maybe Banner of Truth!

    This will be a loss

    This will be a loss

I think it will be a loss for Moody more than Logos.

    This will be a loss

Probably not in the short term! I bought a few resources I didn't want to lose out on, I wonder how many Moody's resources were bought in the last day because of this....I bet more than a pittance!  [<:o)]

The loss of John MacArthur will be huge to Logos.

I will not see the loss of MacArthur as a loss...just my personal opinion...

Of course, it is always personal opinion as to what resources we buy.  I respect John MacArthur, though as a Wesleyan and non-dispensationalist, I disagree with him on many things.  In fact, about the only thing he writes that I am interested in is his New Testament Commentaries which I already have.  (I think he does a great job on the commentaries, and I am not intimidated by the parts of his theology that I disagree with.)  So I don't mean it will be a big loss to me, personally.

I mean that John MacArthur is very popular, and a big seller.  The loss of his books will hurt Logos, if it cannot be corrected.  It will hurt Logos in relationship to rival software which will continue to carry MacArthur's works.  Because I care deeply about Logos' future - as well as my investment in Logos resources - I do indeed think the loss of John MacArthur is huge.

I don't mean to be a conspiracy nut, but is it possible that rival software is trying to get exclusive contracts with publishers of some popular resources in order to squeeze Logos out and increase their market share?

I'm not sure if this is the case or not, but I do know that recently lots of publishers have been trying to up their royalty rates when it comes time to renew their contracts with companies such as Logos. With higher royalty rates the Bible software companies have lower profit margins, which is not good for many given the amount of work that goes into some resources. It could simply be that Logos does not want to agree to a new & higher royalty rate from Moody, which means that when the current contract ends they can no longer sell their resources until a new agreement is reached.

I know this kind of stuff because I talked frequently with the guy who handled this stuff @ WORDsearch during my time there.

Interestingly enough, rival software vendors have accused Logos of doing this [:D]

Yes, Michael, I agree it is a loss for Logos and for Moody, but especially for those that are blessed by Moody products (even MacArthur)...lol!  I really was just having a tongue in cheek swipe at MacArthur as his "Charasmatic Chaos" left a bad taste in my mouth many years ago -  I read widely from all parts of Christendom, and have a few of MacArthur's books on my shelf, but personally (and I respect that he is held in high regard by many) I'd rather spend my money elsewhere.  God bless mate...:)

I can see both Moody AND Logos getting many angry e-mails about this. Let's hope these companies can work something out. This is not good for either company.

On a side note, I'm thankful I own almost every Moody title I want already. While it would be nice to own the Everyman's Bible Commentary - it's missing some of its better titles anyway.

Here is a list of all my "moody" resources I own "publisher:moody"

Great list Kelvin. I agree with almost every one of your assessments. I had not yet purchased Spiritual Discipleship but I think I may do that now.

Using adventure and community to challenge young people to continually say "yes" to God

    just did a research..

MacArthur has 3 different bundles from Libronix years..

    1. MacArthur Lifeworks 1.0

    2. MacArthur Lifeworks 2.0 (has some books from 1.0)

    3. MacArthur Essentials Bible study

Most of these bundles include several publishers, so these may be in a different catagory when and if Moody pulls the pin

I’m sorry my original post was vague. In an effort to communicate better with our customers, we wanted to make sure to get a message up before pulling all Moody content from our website.

Now we have additional information on the situation. Our contract with Moody is expiring, and unfortunately we have not been able to agree on new terms. So we will no longer be able to sell Moody content.

We don’t have a firm date yet on when Moody titles will be pulled. We’ll try to give you advanced warning if we can.

If you already own books published by Moody, you will not lose any content; and you’ll continue to get free updates when we fix typos, etc.

Now we have additional information on the situation. Our contract with Moody is expiring, and unfortunately we have not been able to agree on new terms. So we will no longer be able to sell Moody content.

That is disappointing to hear. I think that many of us suspected this to be the case but I am saddened none the less.

I previously mentioned in this thread that this makes me nervous for the future. It makes me wonder whether Logos may have contract disputes with other publishers in the future which is not a comforting fact for those of us who have invested a lot in Logos. I guess I just assumed that the resources that Logos offered would increase rather than diminish.

Thank you, Kent. Do you know yet whether this applies to Vyrso books too, or is that a separate contract (with, presumably, better terms from Moody's perspective)? I know Logos doesn't get much for Vyrso books so it would be hard to imagine negotiating an even better deal for Moody on those. I guess Moody no longer sees the benefit of the added value that Logos brings to Logos edition books. That's really a shame.

There doesn't really seem to be that much published by Moody that is of interest in any case so I don't know what the hubbub is all about.

Sometime in the very near future, all Moody titles not in the public domain will be removed from Logos.com and will not be available for purchase.

This could happen as early as today.

We do not know when or if they will be coming back.

    We apologize for any inconvenience.

That's a great way to generate sales. Glad they aren't gone; hoping they don't. But the funny thing is that you'll have a lot of  frustrated people if they do AND if they don't

I don't think so. And even if it was, then only for Moody and not for Logos, since I expect most of those who now bought a "last minute" Moody title did so at the expense of other titles (such as not going over once more over the March Madness offers, cancelling some PrePubs shipping soon, etc....)

the funny thing is that you'll have a lot of frustrated people if they do AND if they don't

Hm. Could you imagine the outrage and frustration if all Moody titles went away without announcement (by the way that's  nearly 300 here and nearly 700 at Vyrso) and then someone posted that the publisher told Logos weeks in advance that the contract has expired, they don't want to renegotiate and Logos needs to take out the titles immediately should the one last phonecall with Mr BigWhig fail - with the hint "tell your/our customers about stocking up now, since our lawyers are out to enforce this without delay or mercy"?

Glad they aren't gone; hoping they don't.

Same here. I do hope that the contract is renewed and we will see the existing books plus many more from Moody. I won't be frustrated that I bought two or three resources now I otherwise would have deferred into the future (or considered in the future for the first time). This didn't undermine my trust in Logos, but in "Christian publishers".

Maybe Moody is just being a bit moody right now due to biological circumstances beyond their control (PMS = Purchase More Soon!)

Yes, more proof that lefties really are overrepresented in the genius category [;)]

We've reached a decision with Moody. We'll be pulling all Moody-owned titles off Logos.com (not Vyrso.com) later today or tomorrow. We're not treating this as temporary. It's unlikely that they will be coming back in the future.

Thanks for the update Phil. Sad to hear.

It's unlikely that they will be coming back in the future.

I am sorry to hear this. I know that most of their material is lay-oriented, rather than academic, but that is an important segment of Logos' market. I think the MacArthur stuff is perhaps the biggest loss for that market.

I picked up a couple of items I thought I might miss someday if I didn't have them, but Moody's exit from Logos doesn't affect me much.

Is there any discussion on moving some titles from Logos to Vyrso?

Moody is a company not a person. I think Brennan Manning has more hope for future life (Rom 8:11; 1 Cor 15:42; Phil 3:21) than Moody as a company does even though Moody will likely survive cutting off their relationship with Logos.

I'm thinking that this may be because multiple publishers are involve in the collection.

Ken I purchase AM Foundation Courseware program from logos, and I have loss the disc and when I call logos to replace it logos they don't have one but they let me download from server, I can not take the test nor quiz without the disk and when I call moody they no longer sell program. My question is how can I get disk or what can I do now.

Since you did purchase the program would it be legal for someone else who has the disc make a copy for you or would this be breaking copyright laws?

This might depend on the jurisdiction - however, I still don't understand why the CD-ROM is needed at all. Glenn has the files and can access them. Recently someone told that AM Courseware runs great on L5 (and I took this to include the tests).
