One feature I would like to see related to notes is to be able to have a highlighting style linked to each note file. I know I can set the style feature for notes when I am working but it is a ‘universal’ highlighting style that is set. It will remain on “Blue Star, blue highlighting pen” even if I switch note files.
There are times like when I am working in scripture in Year C Luke cycle that I have two or more note files open: Greek Tranlation notes (Bright purple square), Greek Notes (light purple square), Gospel of Luke notes (Bright blue square), Sermon notes 2013 (Gold square) etc. If the pen is set it tries to do the same thing in various note files. I use different colors and with Logos 5 symbols to differentiate my notes in the text. Right now I have to change them each time I make a note in a file. If the note highlighting style was linked to that note file Simple choice buttons like font and size ..then when I indicated the note would go in that file the style would automatically occur in the text.
I believe this can be done since something similar is happenning with Faithlife where it always comes in as a Green Comment icon and does appear in my texts whenever I add a faithlife comment. BTW I wish just the opposite for faithlife…I wish we could use various symbols, colors, and styles in faithlife so as leader my comments are different from group participants.

To be honest Robert, you lost me. Why don't you just create a Pallete for each note file if that's what you want to do? The Pallete can have only one style. You can assign a keyboard shortcut to that style, and assign the notes for each Pallete to go into the note document(s) of your choice. It sounds to me like that's what you are asking, and it is already possible.

This is an area that needs improvement, but it needs to be submitted to User Voice:

from each Note file it is not clear what the default note style is, nor that it is a universal setting
I agree there should be a default note style for each Note file, but also have a universal setting when you don't want a specific Note style.

When you use multiple note files as I do some tied to books (1 Peter, Luther's Works #45) some to tasks (Greek Translating) and you want to see different symbols and colors in the Biblical Text related to those notes to quickly access your reason for noting (either skipping or paying attention as you teach) This feature I am asking for would greatly ease my work without having a negative for the less than power users.

They monitor that closely and read and refer anything like that.

I have commented things like that in the past and gotten direct email responses from Bellingham to be patient they are working on it.

Those of us long time users since early 2000's know just to put it in the system and with a little prayer it appears. The staff is great about that!

Bob - I am completely lost. Sorry! [:S] It seems that we may be using different terminology. Also, you seem to be describing the system in the reverse from how it works. Note files don't "use" palettes... Rather, palettes can be set to send notes to various note files.

Highlighter – A pen style
Palette – A collection of Highlighters
Note File / Document – Where notes are stored
Palette Specific Note File – A note file named after a Palette (the default location for notes to be saved... this can be changed).
Resource Specific Note File – A note file named after a resource (this is created by the user)
Thematic Specific Note File – A note file named after a theme (this is created by the user)
Most Recent Note File – A setting which allows the user to send notes to the most recently used (or opened) note file. Also called "sticky."

NOTE: You can set the behavior of any given palette send notes to:

A "Palette Specific" note file (named after the Palette)
Any specified note file of your choice (Resource Specific, Thematic Specific, other)
The Most Recent Note File (as described above).

What do you mean "goes for"? Do you mean the notes created by the "Blue star blue pen" goes into "Note File A," but you want it to go into "Note File B"? Or do you mean instead that the note sometimes goes into "Note File A" and sometimes into "Note File B" and you are wondering why?

If I am still not understanding the issue, screen shots might help. [:)]

After reading your posts again, it seems like you want to use the same highlighting styles in several note files. Is that right? If so, there are two options:

Use the "Most Recent Note File" (sticky) option... but you must be observant or the notes will go in the wrong note file. If you are switching around note files quickly, this isn't a good option.
Create Identical Palettes.

Both of these options present the same problem, just viewed a little bit differently.

The way I read you, you're talking about 'squares', 'pens' and 'highlighting styles' as if they were the same. They're not.

The 'square' before the text, indicating that you've made a note at that place, is called a 'note icon'. To set the note icon colour/style, click on the icon in the note file, choose the style you want, and then click Use this style by default. It will only affect new notes, though, not change ones you've already made. Those you will have to change one by one.

Highlighting styles, pens and palettes is something completely different, which is why we're having a hard time understanding you.

If you're making a note with a highlight attached to it, you can set the highlighting style the same way you set the note icon style.

If you're only highlighting, without making notes, you don't use the note file to make your settings, you use the Highlighting Tool. But I'm not sure that's what you want to do, so let's get back to that if necessary.

To add just a little… you CAN add notes to a highlighting note (I know that sounds confusing, but I think it is the right terminology). You can also add a note indicator to a highlight. The work flow could be:

Have the appropriate note file document open
Have the note file document sorted so that new notes appear at the bottom
Make a highlight.
Scroll to the bottom of the note file document
Add a note indicator to the new highlight note
Add text to the highlight note
(optional) change the highlight note title if so desired

There are all sorts of things you can do, but, frankly, at this stage I suspect it's more confusing than helpful for the OP to list them all.

The important question at this stage is whether he's right-clicking to add notes, or using a shortcut or some other method to add highlights. If he's adding notes, he needs to change his settings in the note files to get the colours he wants; if he's adding highlights, he needs to change his settings in the Highlighting tool to make the highlights go to the 'note' files he wants them in.

Then there are ways to make already created notes identical to highlights, and highlights identical to notes, but that's a later issue. For now, his issue seems to be to create notes in such a way that they turn up in the right note file with the right note icon.

Ok I agree we seem to be talking past each other.

Let me try again.....

I have various note files....

One is

Greek Translation: which I have chosen to identify with a Dark Purple Square Icon so when I make a note in that file an icon shows up in the Biblical Text

and I change the Icon to the shape and color I have chosen

All my other files are similarly structured with different colors and shapes so in the Text I can quickly identify which file the note belongs to.

For example this screen cut from 1 Peter has notes from my Greek Translation file (dark purple square) 1 Peter Book notes (light purple triangle) and Sermon Notes Year A 2008 (Gold Square)

Or this one from John 20.19

Which has a number from the sermon files (Gold Squares) General Commentary (Green Squares) and a link to my Bonhoeffer Note File (Blue Star) and a link in that book which is highlighted text and corresponds to a detailed note in that note file.

If I set the highlight pen to mark a section in the text (let's assume blue highlight) when I take that highlight copied into a note file as a note the file doesn't know which file I am working in and because it is a universal setting will always use the same icon, color and style back in the text I last set things at, I have to change the icon and color highlight each time I make a note.

Or let's say I right click a verse in scripture and want to put a note in Greek Translation but I was last in General Commentary the note comes up again the icon, shape, color that I last had the system set as.

What I am looking for is that when I right click on a verse and indicate I want to create a note in for example Greek Translation the Icon, shape and color come up in the text what I have chosen for that particular note file not the general style.

Or when I select a text in a book when I have multiple note files open when I take it to a particular note file the icon shape and color that appears in the text and highlight is the one I have chosen for that particular note file not the universal style I have set on a palette.

For example when I read Luther's Works or Bonhoeffer (I am Lutheran remember ) and take the same note copied twice into both my Luther's Work's file and into a Sermon Notes file I don't have to change the icon style and color it does it automatically to my two choices Luther

so to indicate what I am asking for the following screen shot I would be looking for buttThisons on the ribbon to dictate every note into this file would be a chosen shape (Note indicator) and a designated color (Note Color) and those buttons if chosen as a style for that note file would override the style set when we use "set this style as default" which when you set it occurs in all note files until you change it

The second thing would be a similar choice fix if you wanted a particular highlight pen/palette connected to that file.

I don't know what "Microsoft notes" is (I use Mac). It sounds like you created the post in another program and tried to paste everything in here. That won't work (as you discovered). Here are some tips:

Use a screen capture tool such as JING. I don't know what you are using now, but you need to make sure the image files are either .jpg or .png.
After you have edited the photos the way you want them, save them into a folder where you can easily get to them (i.e. your desktop). You might want to name the images something descriptive so that you can easily identify them by their file name.
Create your new post in the forums. It is best to create the post directly in the forums, rather than in another editor such as Word. (When you paste from another program, "artifacts" are sometimes added which cause glitches in the forums).
When you come to a place where you want to add a picture, use the paperclip icon. This will bring up the "insert media" box (screen shot below). You will navigate to your file by clicking on the "choose file" button. Once you have found and selected your image file, you will click the "insert" button. There may be a delay before it returns you to edit mode, depending upon the size of your image and the speed of the network connections (both yours and Logos).

You can see I use various Note Indicators, Note Colors to identify notes

I use Palettes to make text visible when projected on screen or wall or to just plain highlight text like we always did in reading books with a Yellow Marker or occasionally a blue or red or green one.

What I am looking for in the Note file bar are option buttons like Bold (B) or Italic (I) to choose Note Indicator (color) Note Indicator (shape) so that I don't have to take that extra set each time to change them when I am using multiple note files at the same time.

For example the last screen shot of my sermon prep layout has multiple note files open and the specific book file (Luke) selected. If I want to create a note on a Biblical text I right click on the scriptural text and choose 'Reference' to give it a connection to scriptural verse then when I select which note file I want to place the note in the note indicator (shape and color) come up what ever the 'universal' setting (last default) is what appears in the file blank note not the note indicator (shape and color) that I have chosen to be my preference for that file for example Luke (Royal Blue Square). When I am using multiple files without these 'file linked preferences' I have extra steps to change the default to the 'file chosen choices' I can do it but it sure would be nice to have it be automatic.

The same can be done 'palette wise' back to the text when a note is inserted in a file. When I am working for example in a book series like Bonhoffer's Works I always use a note indicator of a Blue Star and highlight the text with a Blue highlighter from the palette. This is a little easier at this time because I can set the defaults so I will always do this. But there are times I have multiple note files open again Like my sermon file where I might want to add a sermon note and of course the defaults do the blue star and blue highlight in every note file so I have to change it.

So to try to make this short and clearer I am asking for option buttons that are linked to the Note File that set Note Indicator (color) Note Indicator (Shape) Palette Choice (Yellow Highlighter or Blue Highlighter or Orange Text etc) and force any note in that file to show these chosen options in the Note File and selected text. Obviously the default choice in each note file should be "no preference".

When you use the right click menu (first screen shot) to add a note to a note file, you want to be able to set a default "style" to that note file.
As an example, the "delete me" note file has a "grey star" icon (2nd screen shot), and the "keep me" note file has a "red square with exclamation point" icon.
You should be able to select a default preference from within the note file.

The thing that kept throwing me was the whole "highlighting style," which led me to assume this was an issue with highlighting notes, rather than "note" notes. [:)]

Yes that is half of the request.....relating to the Note Indicator You got it.

But what was throwing you ....the highlighter half .... is similar

the setting of a palette default like the note indicator default makes a highlight in the text 'auto' as well.

I see no reason that also could not be similarly linked to the note file so when I add a note to that file my palette choice from either the vast list of choices or a new specific palette automatically occurs instead of the universal default.

What I am asking is for overrides to the 'defaults' based on my choosing note files preferences.

hopefully that better explains it.

BTW only us crazy 'power users' as Morris describes us are ever this in depth on detail how the program works. Still we drive some of the innovation that we love from the program because the 'programing staff' in Bellingham do consider all these crazy comments.
