Is the Patriarchal greek new testament the eqiuvalent of NA 28 or UBS 4?

Is it the critical text of the Eastern Church?

Would modern Greek readers understand it or would it be even more archiac than an English reader reading the King James Bible.

This is a very interesting question.

The Patriarchal text is based on the traditional Byzantine Greek text used in the Eastern Churches. I represents the Orthodox Church's standard traditional text. The Eastern churches adopt a canonical text based on the consensus of tradition.

The NA 28 and UBS 4 are based largely on an eclectic text which, more often than not, agrees with the Alexandrian (Egyptian) texts.They are not based on tradition, but on textual discernment rules refined in the 19th century by Westcott and Hort.

Which text is the one we should use is a matter of opinion. The majority prefer the "eclectic" texts of UBS 4 and NA 28.

However, there are some who, not willing to entrust the sacred writ to such rules as "always prefer the shorter reading," prefer a traditional text. In any case, sometimes the traditional text actually has the shorter reading, but not having been consulted or liked by the comittee, was not included in the eclectic text.

It's Koine Greek, so, some modern Greek people with a good education could understand it. Imagine reading Chaucer. If you had a 3rd grade education you might give up on the first sentence. But if you had a bachelor's degree it might prove easier.

I have one modern Greek Bible in my Logos library:

Naturally, a traditional church like the Greek Orthodox would use a traditional text and the Greek text is similar to the one used in the Trinitarian Bible Society's Greek NT which follows Theodore de Beze and underlies the KJV. The traditional text like KJV is longer than the modern Nestle 28 Greek text. Not as said above. I think the author did not mean what he was written as this happens to us all.

The Greek Bible text is koine, and the parallel text is a periphrastic text which interprets the koine: think of an explanatory text. It is written in a form of modern Greek that is rather close to koine in some respects but is not koine. It is Katharevousa, which is closer to but is not not demotic Greek which is typical modern Greek. From Wikipedia:

Katharevousa (Greek: Καθαρεύουσα, [kaθaˈrevusa], lit. "puristic [language]"), is a conservative form of the Modern Greek language conceived in the early 19th century as a compromise between Ancient Greek and Dimotiki of the time. Originally, it was widely used both for literary and official purposes, though seldom in daily language. In the 20th century, it was increasingly adopted just for official and formal purposes, until Dimotiki became the official language of Greece in 1976 and Andreas Papandreou abolished the polytonic system of writing in 1981.

Katharevousa was conceived by the intellectual and revolutionary leader Adamantios Korais.^[1] A graduate of the University of Montpellier, Korais spent most of his life as an expatriate in Paris. Being a classical scholar, he was repelled by the Byzantine and later influence on Greek society and was a fierce critic of the clergy and their alleged subservience to the Ottoman Empire.^[2] He held that education was a prerequisite to Greek liberation.

No, the Patriarchal text of 1904/1912 is not a critical or eclectic text, nor would it be equivalent to NA/UBS. It is based upon an ancient, miniscule lectionary from Mount Athos. Even when compared to the Textus Receptus, there are thousands of discrepancies.

There is a modern Greek edition of the New Testament, yes, and the Hellenic Bible Society offers this as a parallel text to the Patriarchal one (a diglot). The comparison between Old English and modern English is apt. Liturgical Greek, as used in Greek Orthodox Churches today (such as my own parish), is not modern Greek, but it is generally understood by the people.
