Android Highlighting gone - deleted document?

I am not sure what I did, but I cannot highlight on my Nexus 7 anymore. I use it for daily reading and I think I may have deleted a document - all of my highlights are gone. I can highlight on the Nexus 7 and it syncs with my Windows 7 laptop almost immediately, but no highlights show on the Nexus 7? What did I do and how can I fix?

Thanks, everyone, but I found the problem. For some reason I had unchecked Notes under View Settings. It reads unchecked Notes: Do not show notes. So I figured backwards that I did not want to check it, because I DID want to show notes. Guess it is time to read James again, and pray for wisdom!
