Resource Needed

I'm looking for a resource that will delineate major denominational differences in Orthodox, Protestant, and Catholic churches. I'd like an all inclusive volume that will provide a generalized group of theological tenants that each group holds to. I'd like this not to be just present but past denominations as well. I'd like to be able, for example, to compare the English Puritans against the original Lutheran Church and the Catholic Church at the time of the Catholic-Reformation.

I am not at my installation of Logos so I can only offer 1 resource specifically at the moment; but I might also humbly suggest that you may need to refer to resources "certified" by the individual faiths as your best chance to truly understand different teaching. I would prefer to learn what the Lutheran Faith teaches from a credible Lutheran authority, for example, not a Catholic, Jewish, or Episcopalian scholar.

For Catholic, I do know that the Catechism of the Council of Trent is available. Written in the 16th century, it would still be largely accurate today as well, although the style of writing is much different.

Any of there Apostolic Fathers resources will be rich in how the Church worshiped in the early days. The Nicene and Ante-Nicene resources are direct writings of Church Fathers as well, to cover that period of time.

Alexander - I don't have a suggestion that would be just what you are looking for. There is a good work by Mead & Hill called the Handbook of Denominations in the United States. It doesn't compare & contrast - it lists each one and briefly describes their distinctives, membership, etc. It is not in Logos that I am aware of.

I do not know of a single volume that compares all denominations side-by-side. However, in Logos Nelson's New Christian Dictionary has brief descriptions of many denominations. Appendix 19 contains a comparison chart of about a dozen major denominations. It isn't very detailed but is the only think I've discovered similar to what you are looking for.

This is the closest thing to what is requested. It is worth buying in paper version just for the interesting read. I have found many denominations seem to have strict adherents and rather liberal adherents. But most of the descriptions in the Handbook give an accurate description of what the denomination claims to believe. Two of the most interesting I found were the "Good Seed, Bad Seed" church and the Shakers.

Because of the rapidly changing nature of comparative religion (relatively speaking), you might find that a well maintained and frequently updated website may suit your needs more completely than a work written a few hundred years ago, or even a few decades ago. For example, you could start HERE.

I haven't checked to see whether it actually delineates differences, but you might want to check articles in

Cross, F. L., and Elizabeth A. Livingstone. The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2005.

since it does give some account of each group. Delineating the differences would be up to you.

I know this is an old thread, but I just came across The Complete Guide to Christian Denominations: Understanding the History, Beliefs, and Differences by Ron Rhodes. Unfortunately not available in Logos, but it is available in Kindle, so Logos ought to be able to get it without too much difficulty, and I will suggest it. However it isn't very highly rated on Amazon.com (only 3 out of 5 stars).

Another book which I actually have in paper form and would like to see in Logos is Christianity's Family Tree: What Other Christians Believe and Why by Adam Hamilton. Again, it's available in Kindle.

An oldie but goodie is A.C. Piepkorn's 4 volume "Profiles in Belief". The problem is that it is out of print and hard to come by.

That never stopped Logos from being able to put anything into digital format before. They could easily afford to pay the $3.50 or so to get a used copy, scan it, turn it into a Logos book, and recoup their costs and make a tidy profit. The book isn't old enough to be out of copyright, but the publisher is still in business, so Logos could approach them for the digital rights.
