Packer's "Knowing God" available again! (Just some excerpts)

For those who have been longing for Logos to make J.I. Packer's Knowing God available again, I've just discovered that you can find 13 excerpts from it in How Great Is Our God, a devotional collection of the best writings on the doctrine of God, available on Vyrso.

Yes, I have it, too. But I'd bet (if I was a bettin' man) that it wasn't Logos that pulled it.

I can't imagine Logos not wanting "Knowing God" available in their format. That book is a modern evangelical classic. (It greatly influenced me as a young college student about 100 years ago. But it is so well written that I do not believe it is "dated". Packer is marvelous.)

I'd guess it is some sort of publisher issue, probably over money. Both Logos and IVP have to be sure that what they publish is profitable. Sometimes such interests (or perceived interests) may clash. Of course, that is just guessing. For all we know it could be an author - publisher issue, or any of many other issues.

I would think that IVP would want "Knowing God" published in Logos also. They have a lot of material published in Logos. So maybe something will work out soon.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was more likely to be over rights. Older titles very often had different rights holders in different parts of the world, and I'd think it likely a UK rights holder probably has the worldwide rights, with perhaps IVP just given North American rights. The UK rights holder is Hodder & Stoughton, a major secular publisher, with a fairly large 'faith' imprint. Split rights causes chaos in the digital era, and although Logos have the ability to restrict sales to just North America, they only do that very, very rarely (thankfully).

It said, "Please Note: We cannot directly sell all of our titles to customers in Europe due to publication and distribution rights restrictions. Missed that one. Of course that was long before I was using Logos as I have in the past 10 years or so.

O.K. I bought it especially after I saw the lineup of authors. On another thread people had expressed high praise for Dallas Willard and this will give me a taste of his writing.

Now, the question becomes whether there is any way to create a reading plan which coordinates with the daily readings? I would settle for starting on the book week 1 day 1 reading today. But better would be to start in the current week/day and wrap at the beginning of the book on Jan 1.

There doesn't seem to a way to skip the Front Page/Table of Contents/Preface in the front and the appendices/index at the end. The result is that the proposed plan doesn't align with the daily readings even though they appear to be about one page each.

If the reading plan isn't flexible enough, then what's the next best way to keep a bookmark? Perhaps the bookmarks in the Favorites?

The reading plan feature is not very flexible.

But Logos remembers where you were in a book and opens back up to the same place when you open the book again.

Or you could use a bookmark (as you suggested).
