Login woes

I am getting sick of having to log in over the internet each and every time I want to use Logos. Why is this necessary?

You don't. Are you on windows? What version of the app are you using? Please enable and post logs. See my signature line for more info.

You can indeed.

Start the application while disconected from the internet, and when presented with the login page, click use offline (or soemthing to that effect).

I am on Mac, using the version prior to the newest, 4, I think. But it always shows a login window, even on a laptop. How can I use it without logging in?

It isn't necessary to be connected to the Internet to use Logos software on a laptop - access to some features (such as Reading Lists) require the Internet but the bulk of Logos functionality is available offline

Can you explain what you see / what happens when you try and use Logos offline?

What version of Logos software (presuming Logos 4 or 5 but interested in specific versions)

Of course I have signed into it before. It works fine on my iMac, but the MacBook, when I take it away from areas with internet, well, obviously I cannot connect and verify that I paid for it... It won't ever launch, because I can't login!

You shouldn't have to log in each time. Something is wrong.
What OS are you running? As long as your specs are "up to spec," you should be using L5, not L4. You can get that HERE.
If for some reason you can't use L5, it would be helpful to know exactly what version you are indeed using.
If the above doesn't help, we will need you to post logs. See my signature line.
This thread may be moved to the appropriate forum. If you are using L4 Mac, then that is the right forum. If/when you migrate to L5, then that would be the appropriate forum. The "general" forum is for "general" issues, rather than software specific questions.

I'm still using 4. As for appropriate forums, and technical issues, well, this app is running on wine, internally. It's a windows app, and I am a UNIX fanboy. MacOS is FreeBSD derived darwin, under the hood, but in wine, it's a windows api. We use forks, not 'apartment level threading,' so any expertise I may have is rendered moot. Heck, it wasn't even case specific before 4.

I have the general feeling that mac support is an afterthought.

No. I'm using MacOS. The actual logos distribution, for mac, includes wine to run on. They provide it, amusingly enough.

I had to reformat my drive to be NOT case specific, as the UNIX standard specifies, to run this app, in the included wine distribution, because I don't know enough about windows development to handle it. I could, however, take care of my UNIX apps in a case-insensitive environment.

You are obviously much more a techie than I am… I have no idea what you are talking about. Your situation, however, is very uncommon. As you can tell by my post count, I have been "around the block." I have heard of things like this much more often on the windows side, although it is still fairly uncommon.

My guess is that something is wrong with your installation. I assume you know this, but for others who might read this later… there is the program file (app) and the data files. The app is obviously ok since you just downloaded a fresh copy… but there is something wrong in your data files, which get tweaked, but remain from update to update. I am unsure if Logos or one of our regular techies will need to look at your logs, or if they will know what to do automatically. For the sake of expediency, I normally suggest that people go ahead and enable and post logs.

Actually, I'm not. Wine is a WINdows Emulator. Under it, Windows api's and library calls are made. The use windows DLL's instead of UNIX .so's. They are entirely a different paradigm. I understand UNIX, but I don't understand Windows, or their interfaces, and this app is running on an emulation engine. I *should* have the button you have, but I don't, and I think it's due to emulation failure in WINE. Logos will probably not solve that. I had suspected this, but just wanted to confirm it.

They really should have made a native version so that we could troubleshoot. As it is, we can't, except those developers that use both Win and POSIX.

Still on 10.7.5. I have, however, run this on FreeBSD, under the included Wine. and also NetBSD, with no different effects. The only thing that allows me your button is to run a windows instance in VirtualBox. Of course this takes the already terribly slow emulated environment and slows it down to what we can really call a crawl.

In all honesty, had I know it was not native, before I stared poking around the app directory and seeing the dll's and wine app, I would not have paid for this.

Probably not. What do you call a 'standard way?' I already sacrificed my mac to running logos, reformatting my drive to it's specifications. Perhaps Alabama is not doing anything else with his Mac? I have changed a goodly number of kernel configurations, from the page swap threshold to the amount of open ports and how fast to close them. This system is part of a UNIX environment, but that should not hamper any competent coder. My unique settings for security and memory usage, in the kernel, should not matter one bit if the application is programmed via ANSI/POSIX standards.

That's kind of my point. This is a disservice to an entire community. We paid, too, so give us a native app, not an emulation nightmare. I can't even help troubleshoot this!

WINE is not and has never been used by the OS X version of Logos; it tries to be native wherever possible and where it can't uses Mono under the hood.

I am a standard, Mac user. I have not tinkered with anything. I use OSX & L5 right "out of the box." It works great.

Duh. lol. You're correct, it is trying to use mono to replace .Net. See how bad I am at windows? It's trying to emulate windows api's, however, and does use windows libraries.

The "Work Offline" button will not appear until after the initial login has completed successfully while online. If port 443 is blocked the initial login will not succeed.

Well, thank you. Personally, I think I am just going to go back to real books. The online environment, while helpful, creates its own mess. This stuff does still exist in book format, and I have them available, as well as one that I always thought should be available on Logos and isn't - 'The Preacher's Homiletic Commentary of the Bible.'

While having digital access is convenient, it's somewhat superfluous, and just like cell phones, myspace, facebook, and twitter, I believe it can be dispensed with. Technology is a fine slave, but it makes an awful master. I have the print editions, and I will make do. Perhaps, eventually, digital will catch up.

HTTPS is, of course, automatically allowed via a state rule. I would not block that for any users... Even after logging in, if a net connection is not available, that option will not work, however... I have successfully logged into Logos whenever I can get a sliver of a connection, of course. Sometimes, however, locale does not allow that.

As I said before, it was just a hope. I have been able to bring along any texts required and reference them directly. Most seem to prefer seeing a book, actually, though for private study, the computer is a fine slave. Nice, but not necessary. I have hopes that this will be solved, eventually...
