Witherington: Socio-Rhetorical Commentaries

Hey all,

If anyone has any or all of these do you consider this series worth the purchase? I have his Acts and Mark commentaries but if anyone has any others and could comment then I would greatly appreciate it. One commentary site says that it's mixed series but I wanted to know what others think before I possibly get more of them. Thanks for your thoughts.

Well, I am biased because I love Ben Witherington's work, but the Denver Seminary recommendations have all of his socio-rhetorical works on their list, with at least one (Galatians) being in the must have category. I like his point of view and trust his exegesis for the most part. I believe the Acts volume is the most critically acclaimed, but I think it is representative of his other work. It is not as easy to navigate as some other commentaries, say for instance NICOT/NT, where they clearly label out each verse or set of verses, but his work is great.

I think the question is, how much do you like the two volumes that you have?

Thanks for your input Joseph...Well I really like the Acts series and the Corinthian volume is good...my academic discount is about to fade away so the rest of the volumes would be £52 which is a good savings.

So grab them, ChelseaFC. That's too good to miss.

Ben's a solid NT scholar. Not creative: doesn't have to do something "new", he's reliable and measured.

Some of the SR series provide some really good background (including the Cor one you have). They're not my first go-to commentaries (probably because of their rhetorical focus that sometimes feels like forcing the Biblical narrative into a straightjacket), but that's occassionally useful and they are always reliable. Worth having.

Anything SR is helpful, Witherington and Keener are definitely more than just recommended. I've been very blessed by this series,

Hmmm.. Good question. I'm not sure but it's like a commentary with very good background info. More detailed than Keener's IVP Background commentary but then again it's different as well. Maybe others can answer the question better.

I'm looking at getting the IVP Dictionary for the OT and then picking up the other one that's on pre-pub when my discount runs out.The discounts been great but now it's time to think about being a 'normal' customer and waiting for the sales. [:)]

I believe the SRC is one of the best commentary sets available in Logos for the price. Enjoy!

Yes, I would recommend all of them.

Ben Witherington always thinks outside the box. He usually finds an novel perspective on the Scripture passage that makes you think. Sometimes, I think Ben is too prone to dismiss the traditional understanding of a text. (His greatest strength is sometimes his greatest weakness. After all, sometimes the traditional view may be correct.) But he always makes me think, and that is invaluable. I get insight from Ben that I would not get any where else.
