Annoyance: New Notification Bar

I found the Bar to be really annoying when updating to Beta 2 from Beta 1, as it jumped in with the notification and then began to duplicate the options in the Windows notification area e.g. cancelling the download. It would be much better if the interaction was restricted to the Icon as its yellow colour is sufficient to attract my attention.

Concur New Notification Bar is an annoyance.

When resources are ready to install, wish for option to start indexer. When Logos starts, the index can be built while Logos is in use. Seems puzzling that a restart is needed so can index downloaded resource(s). On Windows, closing application allows indexing to be done while OS X needs restart to launch indexer.

Do you have to do that because of your poor vision due to aging? Is that what the sunglasses smiley is alluding to (you know how blind people often wear sunglasses; I've never understood why -- I mean if they can't see, then how could the sun bother their eyes; I guess it's just to alert other people that they're blind)?

Actually, I am 20-20 in the right eye and 20-25 in the left—with my specs on. God has been good to my physical body.

I have all that screen real estate because I like to open multiple Logos resources plus a MS Word doc or so.

I think the blind people do not want to embarrass other people the way their eyes are looking or moving. Stevie Wonder also wears sunglasses.

Just to give another opinion: I found it a really nice surprise.

I was not really wondering why my computer was running like through molasse when I had just updated Logos, but instead of trying to go to system tray, confirming Logos was indexing and then my usual game of "was it right click or left on the small icon - neither seems to do anything for several seconds - try the other one again - seems not to do, try to repeat process with even more patience" I got it right in my face with a bold blue text to click that seemed to stop the indexer instantly. Real improvement.

Of course I support the idea of a user-setting to avoid annoying those who don't like it.

I think the yellow bar is an excellent improvement. The indexing icon is hard to see, and often disappears. Many users will be unfamiliar with it's tooltips. I'm sure this yellow bar is designed to reduce support queries and frustrations with slowness. I can imagine it being slightly annoying on tiny screens, but it's easy enough to close.

I prefer it on a 19" monitor, but when you close it, later it will return. Some have asked for a setting to have it disabled/hidden.

Me too. I noticed today, when I came back to my computer after getting a cup of coffee, that it also told me that a resource is available for download. I much prefer to see that in the program UI, vs. a tray icon. The pop-up on the tray icon will disappear after a while, this stays. I like it.

I also like that it's telling me what percentage of the indexing is complete, rather than hovering over the tray icon for the info.

I'm running Logos on a 22" screen, and maybe that's why I don't find it annoying.

You could set the priority to "Below Normal" via Task Manager, though it's probably not a good idea. I'll let the dev's explain why, if I'm not just being paranoid. I suppose it's possible to design the Indexer to run at Below Normal priority. My guess is that this option was considered and rejected for good reason. Not being a programmer, I wouldn't venture to guess further.

The Indexer runs its indexing threads at "Lowest" thread priority (while keeping its UI thread at Normal priority). This will cause Windows to give priority to other processes & threads that need the CPU.

You know what would be cool on the new notification bar is if it told us something about which resources have been downloaded, or how many. I often go to the home page after a download to find out what's been updated. What if the notification bar had a clickable drop-down list of new/updated resources and/or version update info.

If you did I might never open the homepage again.

I'm growing more and more inclined to agree.

Having cancelled the "your library is indexing" notification in the new bar, it popped up again twice within a minute or so after I had settled back into reading.

And now the notification is in THREE places - the new bar, the new yellow exclamation mark toolbar icon, and the old system try icon. Is that really necessary?

Just the same, it would be good to allow the user to turn it off. I know that most things sync, but it would be nice to allow "per installation" preference. It takes up much more room on my MacBook than on my iMac.

Oh no! If I quit Logos when I have resources downloaded, it's generally for one of two [related] reasons:

I've used up all RAM and need to free some for some other program to function well.
I have too little free RAM for indexing to work well, and need to restart the computer before doing it.

In both of these cases, an automatic indexer start is the last thing I want.

I agree that the current Logos restart is somewhat annoying. When I don't trigger the indexing by a computer restart instead, the first thing I generally do after a Logos install restart is to immediately quit Logos again, to speed up indexing by having as much free RAM as possible. So not having to open it first would certainly be an improvement. But the fact that I wish I could start indexing with Logos closed, doesn't mean that I wish it to start automatically when closed. Please let me keep some control here.

Btw, I don't see anything about this change in the release notes. It ought to be there.

You should have some control, if it now works the same as Windows.

you are notified the download is complete and Logos will automatically restart to facilitate indexing if you click on the notification. At that point you can close Logos and let indexing begin or restart the computer whereupon indexing should begin; OR
you can postpone indexing for 4 hours
