  • Android 4.3
  • HD 1920x1200
  • Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5GHz (quad-core) processor

Has Logos Bible been tested on 4.3 yet? It's supposed to start rolling out to us regular folk today, but I haven't snagged it on any of my nexi yet.

Looks very cool. I might be tempted, even though I just fairly recently bought an Android phone (Samsung Galaxy S4).

    Some FYI from CNET:

    Storage size/price
"In small tablets, price is everything. On nearly every level, the Nexus 7 offers a better deal than the iPad Mini, and its storage configurations are less of a markup.

    The 16GB Wi-Fi Nexus 7 costs $229, versus $329 for a 16GB iPad Mini. The 32GB Nexus 7 is only $269 -- $40 more -- but the 32GB iPad Mini costs $429, a $100 upgrade.

The Nexus 7 also has an LTE-ready 32GB model for $349, and it's unlocked to work across Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T. Apple's LTE iPad Minis are carrier-specific. A 16GB LTE Mini costs $459, and the 32GB version costs a whopping $559. The Mini also comes in 64GB configurations."

"As any translator will attest, a literal translation is no translation at all."

We've done some (minimal) testing on the new 4.3 emulator and everything appears to be working well. Looking at the changes listed on the Android Developer website, there doesn't appear to be too much that would affect Logos.

I'd bite if I didn't have the Samsung Note 8.0, but I needed/wanted the S Pen and digitizer on the Note 8.0.

    Hi Drew,

Could you please optimize Logos Android for tablets now? The new Nexus 7 has a 1900 x 1200 display and the normal Logos app is not going to look that great on it (it doesnt on my current Nexus 7.)

It would be wonderful to have the iPad app's interface and features for Android tablets too.

Actually, the Logos app already is optimized for phones, 7 inch tablets, and 10 inch tablets. The 7 inch Nexus 7 doesn't have the same layout as the iPad because the iPad is a 10 inch tablet (and 10 inch tablets have significantly more screen real estate). I'd love to hear your feedback on our current layout for the Nexus 7, but I must warn you, the higher resolution of the new Nexus 7 won't actually change the size of any of the UI elements (i.e. it won't give you more screen real estate) it will just make the existing content look sharper and clearer.

    Hi Drew,

Thanks for the reply. I have to confess I did not notice the optimization for the tablet. I also have an HTC One and the apps look the same on both screens in terms of layout.

I would say the fluidity of the iPad app is what I miss the most. I know Android has traditionally lagged in this (I used to be a developer :D) compared to iOS but the newer versions seem to have closed down the gap a bit. I think Flipboard, Google Play Books and Play Magazines all look and function great on the Nexus 7.

Before I go further, I have to say I appreciate the Logos app a lot! Thanks for your hard work.

This tablet is too tempting. A few months ago I had just about convinced myself to try out a 10" tablet this time around. I've had several generations of 7" tabs. But I just really really like the 7" form factor. It's perfect. And it's here next week The 10" tablet won't be released till Octoberish (I think).

Looks very cool. I might be tempted, even though I just fairly recently bought an Android phone (Samsung Galaxy S4).

The S4 is a beautiful phone. Almost, made me wish my contract was up when it came out. I don't remember if you've said: do you use any kind of tablet for reading? The 7" form factor is ideal for reading and portability. I can't imagine long-term reading anything else, except an Amazon Paperwhite or some form of eInk tab.

    Some FYI from CNET:

I agree. There's no comparison. However, I am very interested in what the next mini will look like (the 1st gen seemed premature), but I'm not a real fan of the iOS experience. Except the 64GB iPod Touch which is the only thing that will contain my entire music collection (minus videos) and organize it correctly by the metadata (some players really make a mess of this somehow), and I only use it for music.

We've done some (minimal) testing on the new 4.3 emulator and everything appears to be working well. Looking at the changes listed on the Android Developer website, there doesn't appear to be too much that would affect Logos.

That's what I was thinking when I was reviewing the notes. Thanks for verifying. Looking forward to trying it out first hand.

I'd bite if I didn't have the Samsung Note 8.0, but I needed/wanted the S Pen and digitizer on the Note 8.0.

That's a really nice tab. I do like Samsung's S Pen. I have it with my SmartPC Pro. Though I haven't mastered it for taking notes. Does it offer any advantages when working with Logos on Android?

I do have an Asus Eee Pad Transformer (10"), which I used to use for reading. But frankly, since I got my iPod Touch, and now the Galaxy S4 which superseded it, I don't even boot up the Asus tablet anymore. Text is so crisp on the smaller screen, and it's so much lighter and handier to hold while in bed, or to carry around with me to doctor's offices and on planes and such, that I might not ever feel the need for a larger screen again. Except I would like to be able to watch Netflix movies on the go occasionally, and the S4 is kinda too small for that.

But really, this is a case of "want" not "need" so I'm going to try to fend off the temptations.

Hopefully, I am not breaking any rules with this or tempting you too much.

There might be an opportunity to get $30 off this tablet in the States at Staples ....

Don't worry. You're not tempting me. If I felt for it, it wouldn't be your fault, as "each of you is tempted when you are dragged away by your own evil desire and enticed." (James 1:14)

As usual, we get left behind up here in the Great White North.

According to Android Authority, "Nexus 7 (2013) will be available at Staples Canada on July 31 for $249."

Just as well for me. The flurry of interest in them might have died down a bit, so I might be able to resist. Seriously, I don't think I need one of these in addition to my phone. I carry my phone around with me everywhere as it is. Perhaps when I'm sitting at home relaxing and reading I might want to use something a bit larger to read on...but NO NO NO I'm not going to talk myself into thinking I need one.

Randy, the S Pen doesn't offer any unique functionality with the Logos app. I wish the multi window feature worked with the Logos app.

With the Android version dont forget you need either internet access or to download books beforehand. I was overjoyed when I went to a regional ETS meeting and there was no wifi, so I couldn't access my data. I will continue to be a laptop toting caveman because of this.

Ha! Well, I succumbed. Happen to be in Santa Fe at the moment and felt Best Buy drawing me in, and I they had them in stock. I'm liking the extra screen real estate for the Logos app.

    Excellent!

Is the increased resolution noticeable on the text in the app?

Not so much on the text (clarity thereof), but I can fit more text on the screen now, so I can do my favorite layout of A Guide to Reading the Entire Bible in One Year in the top pane and my preferred Bible in the bottom pane. On my Android phone screen, I was always having to move the divider line up and down so I could have enough screen real estate to read the text in whichever pane I was actively reading.

Hello all can someone tell me the amount of space the Logos installation is taking up. Is 16GB tablet all you need or do you need to have 32GB??

I am thinking of getting a Galaxy Note 8.0 with 16gb.

    Thank Lee

    Hi Lee,

That depends on the amount of books you want to download. The basic app is very light on space requirements. I have downloaded entire sets of commentaries (NICOT/NICNT) to my iPad and that did not take too much space (less than 500 MB if i remember correctly) and I do not see why the Nexus 7 would be different.

A screenshot of the new hi-res screen.... smaller text sizes are more clear now so you can see more on the screen!

    Hey Lee,

I have over 1500 books on my 32gb Nexus and it takes up around 8-9GB. With plenty of space to spare. So it depends on what you want the Nexus for. 16gb should be sufficient but 32gb gives you great space to put other things on as well. My Verdict: Depends how you want to use it. Hope that helps.

    Hello and thanks Geo

From what I see the 16gb should be more than what I will need for use then.

    thanks again.

The performance is fabulous with Logos.  At last I can finally download my whole library because of the 32Gb storage and still have some left over for other things.  I haven't seen any problems with Android 4.3 on this device yet.

I have Portfolio and I can barely fit it into 16Gb(without the Perseus collection), but it doesn't really allow you to use the device for anything else because it will frequently run out of storage.  A more modest library should fit on a 16Gb device without problems.  Another approach I have used is to download the resources whenever I use them.  After awhile you have the set that is important for your studies and leave off the ones that are less relevant.  The tendency is to download whole commentaries, but I found in practice there are some books that I don't study very often and thus don't really need all the commentary volumes downloaded.

I have a Nexus 7.  I also had Logos and Vyrso installed on it.  This week it updated to Android 4.3.  At first glance and a cursory use, it appears that my Logos titles are working fine.  I noticed significat increase in reaction speed and a sense of smoothness after the upgrade.

If you can afford the extra $40 get it. I wish I had. I don't download all of my books, but you will find that you use it for far more than Logos after awhile. Compared to other tablets where doubling the storage adds $100 usually the 16GB v. 32GB price increase is a real steal.

If you can get it today, Office Max has a coupon for 20% off your purchase, including tablets. I was actually able to get Office Depot to price match their coupon and ended up paying ~$235 with tax for my 32gb Nexus 7.

    That coupon expires today though.

  • Randy,

Just came across your LOGOs 8 canvas on 2 Pet 1:5-11. Curious how you got that clip art of Jesus in there, because I have been trying to figure out how to do that. Couldn't figure out any other way to try to get in touch with you, because I don't have a Facebook account.

You can reach me through my email, at getlopi@hotmail.com

    Thanks
