How long does it take to regain computer space from hiding resources?

I deleted (hidden) many resources yesterday from Logos 5 as I am running a little low on computer space (only 10% available). I have restarted Logos multiple times, as well as doing the same for my laptop. But the size of my resources have stayed the same and thus I am still not gained the space on my laptop. How long does it take before it really deletes the files from my hard drive?

They should be deleted when you first restart Logos after hiding them. First ensure they are not listed in Library but are listed in Program Settings >> Hidden Resources.

If size of the Resources folder is the same the resources would be relatively small e.g. a folder size of 10.0 GB would remain the same if you deleted 20 or 30 small resources totalling 50 MB or less. So look at the number of resources as well as size.

When you have finished hiding resources use the command rebuild index to get a further reduction.

The ultimate reduction is to reinstall Logos from a backup of your resources.

EDIT: in the world of your hard drive, though, you would be looking to remove at least 1 GB of resources from a 100 GB drive, or 5 GB from a 500 GB drive for a 1% improvement in each case. It is unrealistic to remove 50% of your 10 GB of resources and difficult to remove even 10%, so you really need to look elsewhere.

On a PC I would get CCleaner as it could remove several GB's of temporary files if you don't regularly clean the drive with a similar utility. And you can use MS's Disk Cleanup program to remove GB's of restore points and Service Pack Backup files (ask for clarification).

Delete temporary internet files (for Windows...in Chrome: Settings > History > Clear browsing data; in Firefox: Settings > Privacy > Clear your recent history > Everything > Clear now; in Internet Explorer: Settings > Internet Options > Browsing history > Delete > check "Temporary Internet files and website files" > Delete; sorry if you're on a Mac, I don't know how to do it)
Uninstall any programs you don't use anymore

Thanks, Dave. This is what I was wondering, if it was done immediately. I had deleted over a 100 of the Civil War books from Perseus, but I realize now that they must be very small files...

I have really had no trouble with space until about 2-3 months ago. So started using AVG PC Tune-up, but it still hasn't done as much "clean-up" as I wanted.

And I use MS's Disk Cleanup often.

Might be time to upgrade to a larger hard disk then. Once you get down to only 10% disk space free, you're also going to find everything getting slower. Windows needs a certain amount of free disk space to use as a swap file, and if it doesn't have enough space for that you're going to end up with a lot of churning of the disk while doing operations that you wouldn't think would need to hit the disk at all. I personally start feeling cramped for space when I'm down to only 25% free, and that's when I upgrade. I like to keep at least 50% free space in order not to feel claustrophobic. Having to micro-manage by deleting 2-3 MB files here and there is no fun and is a waste of time (it'll just fill back up again soon enough). Disk space is cheaper and cheaper these days. You can get a 500 GB hard disk for about $60.

EDIT: Oops, just noticed you're talking about a laptop. Might be a bit more expensive then, and as Dave points out below, laptops are generally not user-serviceable so you'd also have to pay for help to get it installed. But probably worth spending money on this kind of upgrade before buying any more Logos resources, or you'll be pulling your hair out.

Looks like you need:-

a bigger HD, or
ship some files/programs onto an external drive (USB 3 for speed), but not Logos!

Both options should be possible with a notebook but you may need expert help with a new HD.

The average size of the Logos resources I own is 2.9Mb, and the average is bumped up significantly by resources that are media-heavy such as the 1,000 Images and Lexham Audio Bible. More than half of my resources are less than 1Mb in size.

I find SpaceSniffer very good at identifying which folders are using the most space. After a short scan, it shows the space used visually, and you can drill down very easily to see more detail.

As a small point, I don't think Logos reduces the size of your index when you hide resources. To do that, you have to force reindexing. However, as indexes take up only a portion of the space that resources take, that won't make enough difference to be worthwhile.

Usually I run fine, as long as I have 15% free....this morning I have been able to free some.....so I am up to 13.5. Almost there! And my Outlook is really bloated, so that will probably do it.

I do use an external drive to keep much of my documents on, but definitely not Logos!

And I have been able to regain a good bit of space back...I am now up to 13.5% free, so that helps. I need to deal with Outlook, as I keep almost every email. So I definitely can gain space there!
