I am considering tagging all my books for putting them in collections. I want to know if this is a good idea or is it just more work that is not really needed.

I see community tags and am wondering if there is some extra sorting that can happen with "quality" tags. For example Commentary; Expositional or Commentary; Exegetical. or expositionalcommmentary

I have purchased a number of "Lutheran" books that I would like to search. I am not sure how to search as each book is very different. commentary, dogmatics, luther works. etc.

Personally, I tag resources/put them into collections, only when I need the collection. Otherwise it takes hours, and it won't be quite what you need. I haven't found the community tags accurate/complete enough for me to build collections around (although sometimes they're useful to search on to see if I've missed anything).

So If I needed to search all my commentaries on Matthew, for a reference to a particular passage in Isaiah, I would then create a collection for commentaries on Matthew (which is quite easy to do from the Collections tool, nowadays).

That said, it's worth tagging all your commentaries as Exegetical/Expositional etc. This tagging is worth doing IMO, as it allowed me to dividing my commentaries into sections, and create a custom passage guide. This is a real timesaver, as I usually know consult different types of commentaries at different points in my studies. My PG might have too many sections for you, I'd usually recommend five sections, like this: http://www.logosbiblesoftwaretraining.com/documents/suggested-commentary-tags/

The Unclassified section at the bottom is to alert me to new commentaries I haven't tagged yet. It's a collection that includes all commentaries, and then excludes each of the other collections.

Yes - many people do this. Some use rules from http://wiki.logos.com/Example_Collections and tag all resources accordingly, others tag individually and subsequently build collection rules around mytag:XXXXX

You could always move individual books into the collection - or tag them and append OR mytag:Lutheran to the rule.

I tagged all my resources this past spring and it has been very useful. I would highly recommend that you take time to carefully choose the categories you want to use before beginning. I took quite some time to do this before I began and it was good advice that I heeded.

Yes - my reason for doing it is to avoid having to use "" around search terms.

So, for example, in the screenshot below I am searching for those books tagged with "fiction book" and I only have one (created for this example)

If I omit the "" then I get hits for resources tagged with either "fiction" or "book"

So not using spaces removes the need for the quotes.

I'm a tagger. I have 5 collections but I don't remember why.

Obviously tagging can create a host of structured categories as described above. But only a single level is do-able (unlike a file manager).

But you can ALSO rename the titles of the resources for additional sort levels WITHIN the tagged categories.

I do 3 types of renaming:

- On commentaries and Bible book oriented resources, I put a book number on the front of the title (eg Genesis = 01; Rev = 66).
Apocrypha 67, etc. That way in a series, they're always in order, plus outside a series, they're grouped by book (eg all my
Genesis commentaries). Also on a tab, I can easily see which commentary books are open.

- On lexicons, grammers, etc, a short abbreviation in the title cleans up the sort, plus works better in the right-click resources listings.

- On Bible translations, I put short abbreviations in the Title to group them in the menu dropdowns, and also verse comparisons.
So for example, I put 'KJV' on my various historical KJV-based Bibles to easily see wording evolution. Ditto on latin based, etc.

I am with Bruce. I tagged ALL my books last year. It took a LONG time, but I am very happy that I did. I got to know my library much better, and I now have much better control over my resources and can find what I need much faster. Plan well, as Bruce said. Make sure you have the right categories that are useful for you before you begin.

In your library panel, if you click in the Info button at the top, and then select a book, the first line (title) has a little pencil to click on, allowing edits.

For those who might be interested this is the tagging system I currently use. It is continually developing. Mary-Ellen, my Bible book numbers are included in this document. As far as handling books that refer to multiple books simply add more tags.

Whatever system it is important to be careful to be consistent.

I have my own controlled vocabulary that I use in a library management program (BookCAT) that includes my paper library and other resources that I have access to, along with Logos--never up-to-date, of course. Something to think about. But how much keyboarding time do I really have? And how much research time will it really save, or important resources will it find that I would otherwise miss? Always a trade-off, and there's never an end . . . .

Mary Ellen, on multi-book commentaries, I just assign the number associated with the first one. So for example the petrines combined with Jude would get a '60'. It's not perfect, but it sorts them in the correct general area. Some commentaries have intro volumes which I assign '00'. The headachy ones are Hermeneia and the Sermon on the Mount, 'Q', etc which I assigned to '40' (Matthew).

While on the subject (!), I don't like the NT papyri and DSS Biblical volumes at the top (and randomly) through my library. Mainly they're lookup resources. So I added an abbreviation in front of each (eg DSS). Result is the commentaries are all nicely sorted by Bible book at the top, as the default sort (until Logos remembers the sort).

You are welcome. It is an absolutely great way to get to know your library better. It forced me to pause and reflect for at least a few seconds to think about each resource. Then tagging allowed me to categorize. I especially like tagging resources to be able to track what I want to read as it is so easy to lose books in my mind (out of sight, out of mind). Now, I have hundreds of books in different categories that I want to read and I just review those every time I want to read something and they are there as a reminder.

By the way, if you choose to tag your books I would also recommend that you take a few seconds to rate them as this will save time and allow for some pretty amazing searches in the future. I actually went through my library twice (first to tag, then to rate) but doing it at the same time would save time.

How about the Noet type resources? would you just add the noet tag so that a distinction can be done between secular and non secular resources?

My question is because I would like to be able to do collections with resources that come more from the secular spectrum (noet), so that comparison can be done with those resources that have a Biblical worldview as basis.

Example:

You have a philosophy tag, but I do not see that you divide the secular ones from the evangelical (believing) type. Could it be done by adding Noet tag to the ones produced by secular philosophers, anthropologists, environmentalists, etc.?

Hi Hamilton. Of course you can use tags whatever ways best suit your needs and, if you would like to use a Noet tag, that may be helpful. Personally I don't make a distinction between Noet and Logos. My reasoning is that truth is truth and error is error and both can be found in secular and Christian resources. The key for us all is to develop critical thinking to determine the difference.

Correct, you are right, I was just thinking along the lines of separating to allow particular view of secular thought in a separate section.

I do something similar by making a huge collection with just one word as rule:

Catholic

Reformed

Baptist

Anglican

etc. (not sure if is the least effort consuming way to classify resources by rough orientation).

So I can look up just there, and see how it differs from the others.

To the above then I would add "Noet" to signal that those resources may not originate from a Chritian worldview.

The above brings to mind a question that maybe you can help with:

What do you perceive to be the relation among:

Philosophy, worldview, ethics, spirituality, theology, and formation,

and how do they relate (integrated) to christian living.
