Logos Reading Plans not syncing between iPad and PC - Solved!

I've had this issue for some time and seen others with it as well. You create a reading plan, and it shows up immediately on your device - in my case iPad or iPhone. You do some reading on your device - and it says you are up to date, but your computer does not.....

I also noticed quite a few other people posted a similar problem. So I did some testing.

For me the resolution was to allow Logos to see my location.... I am pretty strict where it comes to allowing location services and saw no reason for Logos to need it. But the moment i enabled location services - my reading plans now sync.

Hopefully this helps you out, and maybe someone can pass to the developers to set it so it's not needed to have location services to sync reading plan progress?

Can you explain more? I know that I do NOT allow Logos too use my location. Where are you finding this setting and how did you enable it?

    Thanks :D - I've been here for a while, I just haven't posted!

The option is within logos for me, I am on IOS 6.1.3, though I think it was the same in 5. Bottom right in the news panel it had a link 'allow logos to see your location' (though I can't remember the exact wording now). Clicked that, clicked allow and everything synced.

The other way is if you allowed in Logos but then blocked in IOS, it will be under settings, privacy, location services.

I didn't find it there... I figured that somewhere in the proclaim settings this might appear... At some point you must have turned that on. Do you actually use proclaim? Using location services can be really bad on your battery life...

I don't use Proclaim... Have you checked your IOS privacy\location settings?

Yes - I hope they just remove the need for location settings... (or the apparent need)

Yes, I did check... Logos wasn't listed in location services UNTIL I switched proclaim on.

Unless there is something funky that I dont know about, location services is only used (and available) in relationship to proclaim. I am trying to troubleshoot something right now. [EDIT: I just deleted the app and am reinstalling. I am trying to see if Logos is removed from location services. As I said before, it wasn't available previously on my iPhone, and isn't available on my iPad]

I can verify that deleting the app removed my proclaim settings and consequently removed the app from "location services."

I am unsure if turning on "location services" was coincidental in fixing the sync issue for you or not.

I have an easy way to test - I will block logos location services in IOS (settings\privacy) and then make a change to my reading plan progress - then confirm the update.

I'll post as soon as I have tested.

Ok - weird. Enabling location services the first time allowed synching - and since I have disabled it, I am still synching. Maybe there is an initial call being blocked?

    My process.

Opened Logos5, confirmed today was not marked read. closed Logos5.

Opened iPad settings, turned off Location services.

Opened Logos in iPad, got a prompt to turn on location services - clicked cancel.

Went to one of my reading plans and marked today read.

Closed and opened Logos on iPad to ensure it had synced - saw it checking for updates and syncing.

Opened Logos5 - my plan has still synced.

    Closed Logos5

'killed' Logos on iPad in task manager

opened logos in iPad - marked second section as read.

Exited, killed and reloaded logos on iPad to make sure has synced - got the 'please enable location services' again.

Opened Logos5 on PC - second change I made is now synced.

As far as I can determine, enabling the first time in logos, then even disabling in location services, allowed me to sync.

What I did notice is that before I enabled in Logos, Logos was not listed in the apple location services - once i got it in that list and disabled, syncing worked. All I can deduce from this is 2 things.

    - it's either just weird.

    - the initial call to register Logos in location services needs to occur for some reason before logos can sync, which would be something to do with a procedure call set within the logos app. Only a developer could confirm this.

    Hope this helps!

Can you give a screen shot of that? As far as I know, the only time Logos needs location services is in relationship to Proclaim. My best guess is that at some point you activated proclaim... Actually, you can test that theory for me. On the homepage, press the "gear wheel" icon. Click on "presentations." Do you see "Follow Presentations" switched to "Off"? (Don't switch it on if its off).

Presentations is on - it cannot be turned off (see screenshot) - greyed out.

    Other screenshot also attached.

If you like - I also have another iPad at home or my iPhone, and can uninstall\reinstall logos on those to go from the start again with testing - I just don't want to uninstall on this one as I have so much already downloaded content!

I don't know how you did it, but at some point you must have accidentally turned on Proclaim. It is possible that this could be a clue to your issue... Since I have never turned it on (except to test things out like just now), I cant speak from experience.

It would be interesting to see if Proclaim has been turned on in those other apps/devices. Let us know what you find out.

Side Note: I generally don't recommend downloading large amounts of your library unless absolutely necessary. (My iPhone only has a few downloaded resources... my wifi only iPad has about 100 downloaded resources (out of more than 3500). I am around wifi most of the day, and when I am not, I am only a few hours away from being back to wifi.

    Will do tonight.

I only probably have 20 things downloaded (Bible versions, about 4 books I am reading and about 2 commentaries) - internet is pathetic here in Aus though, you can wait 1-2 minutes to load a book off the net some days!

Will let you know how it goes.

    Theory blown :(.

Got other iPad. Deleted Logos completely.

Reinstalled logos on iPad. Specifically turned off location services as well.

Loaded logos, logged in, let it sync. Proclaim is off (see screenshot). Also checked - under presentations it is off.

Marked today on one plan read, waited to make sure it synced and exited. Loaded Logos5 - my plan is synced.

Wondered if it was because I disabled location services alltogether - so I enabled it. Deleted logos and tried again - same result.

NOTE: This iPad is IOS 5.1.1 - as an ipad 1st gen.

So whilst turning on the location service fixed on my iPad mini, there were no problems on old iPad.

All I can think is that if someone has the problem - turn on location services and see if it fixes, then turn off? I have used Logos on this iPad before though, so that could be of note - it isn't 'clean'.

If you like I can try another iPhone at home that has never had Logos on (wifes), and see if I can replicate?

I wouldn't worry about it unless you have troubles again. [:)]

You were affected by a reading plan sync bug that I fixed on the server about a week ago that had nothing to do with location services.  Your app had gotten out of sync with the server, so syncing down reading plan statuses would no longer work correctly on that device.  Here's the fix we have in place currently while we diagnose the situation further:

    1. Start a sync on the affected app by marking a reading plan session as read.  Wait about 10 seconds for the sync to complete.  It's important that a sync is started on the app that is having sync issues - otherwise the server won't be able to fix the problem.
    2. Go to Faithlife or documents.logos.com to verify that the reading plan status synced.
    3. Mark a session as read on Faithlife or documents.logos.com.
    4. Close the app that's having sync issues and re-open it to start a sync.  Observe that statuses are now being synced correctly.
