I just downloaded the L5 engine upgrade. The topic guide does not bring up anything when I type in a topic. I have Naves and 14 other Topical references according to my Library. Any help?

James - If you want to enable the new features, such as the Topic Guide, you need to purchase an upgrade. You can purchase a new base package, or purchase the minimal cross grade. When you download the engine alone, it will provide you with the same features as L4, with the updated engine only.
Thank you. I was assuming it would work with the Topical Indexes I already own like the Nave's Topical Index, etc. What I get for assuming.
The topic guide is more than just opening up Nave's… which you can do without the Topic Guide. It requires the Topic Guide Data Set which Logos employees spent much time and effort putting together. Here are links to the core datasets & minimal cross-grade. Your price for each should be based on what you already own.

I didn't react yesterday, but after reading something else, this thread came back to me. Is there a "Topic Guide Data Set"? Doesn't the Topic Guide require the LCV, and isn't the LCV included in the Logos 4 Minimal Crossgrade (and the L5 base packages), but not in the L5 MC or CD?

According to http://www.logos.com/product/28494/logos-5-core-datasets, the Topic Guide feature is included in both L5 MC and CD

I guess I am not sure what defines a "data set." But it does appear to be something you have to purchase. The screen shot is from the "core dataset" page. The left column of dots is the core dataset column… the right is the "minimal crossgrade."
I agree with both of you, but there's a difference between 'feature' and 'dataset'. The L5 CD and MC both presuppose that you already own an L4 package or MC (and thus the LCV):
And Dave certainly seems to think the LCV is necessary for Topic Guide to work: Guides.
Now, maybe I was so influenced by the other thread where someone couldn't use the Topic Guide, that I just wrongly assumed this user also didn't own an L4 package. If so, you're probably right. But if he doesn't own L4, I don't think the L5 CD or MC would help him without the L4 MC.
Hmm, he certainly didn't own any L4 package in November: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/58820/419189.aspx#419189.
Thanks fgh.
Appreciated, Graham
A very good point and another source of confusion. Bradley confirmed privately that LCV is required and that it comes with any Logos 4 or Logos 5 base package, Logos 4 Minimal Crossgrade, or Verbum. The fact that the Upgrade page and Verbum page don't mention the feature nor the dataset only adds to the confusion, but I have requested Logos to clarify matters in these web pages. Meanwhile, I have documented what I got from Bradley at http://wiki.logos.com/Upgrade_or_Crossgrade
I purchased the Logos 5 minimal crossgrade for $159.95 to upgrade from Logos 4 and the topic guide is not working for me either. When I type in a word I get nothing in the search results.
What do you own in terms of base packages, core datasets & minimal crossgrades?
I read Dave's wiki page, and it's clear the situation is getting seriously depressing.
In L3, I had a 'package' (OL). It did not include many higher package tools, but some arrived accidentally on CDs I purchased. Then I did a crossgrade in L4. But moving to L5, I'm pretty sure my 'package' disappeared, replaced with an L5 crossgrade. I think I'm lost in space per Dave's wiki.
Logos has so muddied the waters, that users can't easily tell what they 'own' or at least accidentally 'own' or maybe 'own'.
All I know is that I bought the Christian Home Library (JG) [DVD] in 2011. I installed it on my computer and have been using Logos 4 up until this week when I did the Logos 5 crossgrade. It was my understanding that all of the core datasets were included with the L5 minimal upgrade. I am not interested in buying a base package because I would only be paying for a lot of resources I didn't want or would never use. I thought the L5 minimal crossgrade would be sufficient for my needs.
Hi William
the L5 crossgrades assume a L4 base package. From your post I assume you didnt have one.
if that is the case, then to get functionality such as Topic Guide you will need the L4 minimal Crossgrade (http://www.logos.com/product/28576/logos-4-minimal-crossgrade).
is that an option for you?
Graham
What exactly do you mean when you say that the Topic Guide "is not working"?
I am not interested in buying a base package because I would only be paying for a lot of resources I didn't want or would never use. I thought the L5 minimal crossgrade would be sufficient for my needs.
The MC is an expensive way to get databases most users will never use. I suspect Starter would be of much more use to you than the full L5 MC.
I don't understand why I would need to buy a L4 minimal crossgrade when I was already using Logos 4 or why I need one now after I have purchased the L5 crossgrade and am now using Logos 5. That doesn't make much sense to me. Wasn't the Christian Home Library I purchased in 2011 a base package?

Well, the Topic Guide does work in conjunction with the Sermon Starter Guide so apparently data is there. I just can't get any search results when using it by itself. Maybe it is just me. [*-)]
The quick way to see if the Topic Guide "works".
1. open a new topic guide
2. type chr in the selection box
3. wait for it to bring up a pick list
4. no pick list? it isn't working; short pick list - you have few resources indexed for the Topic Guide.
5. select item from pick list.
6. crash or no results - installation problem, call customer service
7. results ... that what's available to you in your resources.
Apparently No.4 is my problem. Thank you, MJ.
If it's no pick-list, most likely you have a corrupted index. Give customer service a call. They'll know which one needs rebuilt. Short pick-list ... a few carefully chosen resources can expand it if you really want.
I don't have a grasp on all of these details... but I can speak GENERALLY, which may or may not apply to your situation.
I don't understand why I would need to buy a L4 minimal crossgrade when I was already using Logos 4
A confusing thing about Logos is that sometimes they have difficult to understand terminology. "Logos 4" or "Logos 5" can apply to software AND/OR resources (i.e. base package). Someone telling us that they were "already using Logos 4" doesn't tell us what we need to know. The software is always free... the resources and datasets required to run various features cost money.
Wasn't the Christian Home Library I purchased in 2011 a base package?
I think so... but that doesn't mean that all features were included. In fact, I don't think they were. If I remember right, that package was a "starter" one.
why I need one now after I have purchased the L5 crossgrade and am now using Logos 5.
Again, I don't know if this applies to you or not, but let me explain in general terms.
Logos sells "datasets" in either "minimal cross grades" or in "base packages." Some features are only provided in higher base packages, or in "minimal cross grades." The Logos 5 "minimal cross grade" is intended for users who had all of the datasets from L4 already, and who don't want to purchase a new base package. It is very possible that a user didn't have all of the core data sets in L4. In that case, they would need to purchase the L4 minimal cross grade in addition to the L5 one. I <think> that is the case for you.
That doesn't make much sense to me.
I understand, and it is indeed confusing. Logos does, however, have "dynamic pricing." If you own SOME of the datasets, your price should reflect your previous purchases.
Perhaps Logos could/should have combined the L4/L5 "minimal cross grade" into the same package. The price would have reflected a higher price point, however, which may have confused and deterred many people who were moving from an L4 package to an L5 one.
EDIT: I see that once again I have come late to the party. [<:o)] I'll leave my answer up in case someone comes across this later with the same questions (but different problem).
You need the LCV** from the L4 min Crossgrade. As a Logos 4 feature it is not included with any L5 crossgrade and it was not included in all L4 base packages either. You also need resources of type:encyclopedia in Library!
As Albama states you should get a discount for the stuff you already own e.g. Biblical People/Places/Things, else you will also acquire those Tools!
** Logos Controlled Vocabulary database.
Martha
I have exactly the same pick list and it doesn't depend on my resources because I don't get any result from "Christianity and Judaism: Parting of the Ways"! This is because the list comes from the LCV database, so no pick list = no LCV!
Then when you get the LCV database you may not get a result in Topic Guide's Definition section unless you have some resources tagged with LCV milestones. A partial list of these can be found at http://community.logos.com/forums/t/23119.aspx and http://community.logos.com/forums/p/52078/382532.aspx#382532.
Dave, you are correct. I melded to issues into one. Thanks for clarifying.
