Feature Requests

I just installed the Android app on my new Nexus 7 and have been very impressed with the highlighting abilities. However, there are a few things that I think could be improved. Therefore, I have the following feature requests:

Page scrolling instead of flipping
View the passage while writing a note
Search notes
Tag notes with various keywords
Browse notes based on their creation date or tag
Create notes that aren't attached to a reference (i.e. if a speaker has announced the title of his sermon but not the passage he'll be preaching from, be able to start a note with the title he gave and link it to the passage later).

I haven't been able to find a way to do these things. If there is a way, and I am just not aware of it, I would very much appreciate it if someone could explain it to me.

This feature has been talked about forever. Honestly, I have given up on seeing it as I see other "features" worked on in the Android App.

I find that the note function is very weak in the Android app. I have put in requests several times. Other app suppliers have done much better in this area, and they are catching up on their library selection.

I don't get it; teaching and preaching from a tabet is the way to go and having a note with hyperlinks to related scriptures is required for that.

I'm not sure what the problem is, Maybe we need to take up a collection so they can afford to work on this?

I have emailed Bob@logos.com a few times about this issue and lack of parity for the Android App. I am told that they have as many resources devoted as they can. But the more who ask, the more they can see they need to speed development. I encourage you to write a letter to Bob about this.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by including quotes around the word features (every feature we work on is important to someone, otherwise it wouldn't make sense, business-wise, to work on it), but as I have said in other threads, I personally am currently working on the notes implementation for Android, specifically with the goal of feature parity with iOS. I understand that from an outsider perspective it can seem like we're dragging our feet or not putting enough priority on the problem, but I assure you, we are working hard.

I read every post that is made on both this forum and the Android Beta forum, so I certainly realize how many people want both notes and vertical scrolling (and every other feature that is requested). Both of these are complicated problems, and specifically note support requires a significant amount of structural code that must be written carefully and then tested inside and out to avoid bugs that could corrupt your existing note data.

Anyway. I'm just writing to let you know your concerns are not falling on deaf ears. I appreciate your continued patience and support of Logos and the Android team.

Thanks for the reply. Having developed some software myself, I understand how long process can take and appreciate the time you are taking to make sure the software is big free. If the current Android app and what I've heard about the PC software are any indication, I'm sure that the features you are working on adding will exceed expectations and be well worth the wait.

I am glad to hear that you are working on the notes feature for Android. I appreciate the complexity as well...I started with punch cards in the 70's..days long gone..just a user now.

Just one question for consideration: Is the goal of parity with IOS is high enough, I have the IPhone app, it falls short as well, maybe the IPad version is better.

Could it be possible to get an updated graph similar to how they do CP progress? That way there aren't any specifics, but if Vertical Scrolling (or whatever features you care to list ) have any improvement or Logos has an estimate on how much they have completed, we could see something that would tell us how far development is? That way us "outsiders" can see something and Logos isn't locked into anything. Again, as I have told Bob and posted elsewhere, no communication is fatal to a relationship.

I really don't think a graph would be as useful as you are saying. With most (if not all) major software features, providing time estimates is practically impossible. As an example, I made a personal goal of what I wanted to accomplish this week, but that goal did not account for the day and a half I unexpectedly had to spend working with customers to resolve bugs with the new reading plan implementation. If there was a publicly available place where we posted our progress and estimates, I would have then had to go update this chart which would have disappointed you, the customers, and taken up more of my time that I could have spent getting back to developing new features. As it is, I waited until this evening to reply to your post because I didn't want to mentally step away from my project. [:)]

I use just as much software as you do, and trust me I understand how hard it is to wait for a bug fix or new feature. That's why I try to be as open and forthcoming as I can on our forums. I believe I have mentioned (once or twice [;)] ) that I am working on improving the Android notes functionality. I can't speak for what Gabe and David are working on, but I think my project is going smoothly. I started working on the non-UI part of the code that manages notes and note documents, and am currently working on refactoring the UI for creating/editing notes to work with the new architecture (an architecture that matches that of iOS). Once I've got that working, the next steps include (but are not limited to) testing upgrading from the old architecture to the new architecture (got to make sure your note data is safe!), and then starting on the UI for Note Documents and Reading Plan documents. I cannot give you an estimate of when I will finish, because frankly, I don't know. I could guess, but if an issue comes up or something else becomes a higher priority, that guess could go out the window. Which is why the official Logos policy is not to give estimates of release dates until very close to release.

I hope that helps answer your question, even if it may not be the answer you were hoping for. If it ever seems like we're ignoring the forum users, try not to take it personally. It just means we're trying to spend our time getting new features and fixes out the door and into your hands. [:)]

If you stated scrolling as well as flipping I would have no problems.

I use mainly use Logos for reading on my my Nexus7 and usually hold the Nexus in both of my hands so that a slight tap with my right thumb at the right edge of the screen is enough to turn the page. Scrolling would mean a far less comfortable hold. I have seen people turning the page by stroking it over with a fore-finger - in effect using the whole hand - but that certainly is not needed with my Nexus; just a slight tap that is all that is required.

If scrolling can be implemented but still allow pages that would be great but not at the expense of losing page turning.

If you stated scrolling as well as flipping I would have no problems.

Don't worry - when we add page scrolling we will not remove page flipping... it doesn't need to be an either/or proposition.
