Again Force Quits for Logos on Mac

It seemed to be better for a while, but once again Logos 5 on my MacBook Pro is very often requiring a force quit. The situation and issues seem to be the same as before, so I will not restate them. Again, I do not think I will be able to reproduce the need for a force quite, it just happens. Most often it is when I have opened and closed the MacBook and left Logos running for some time. Never or very seldom happens when I use Logos off line.

I know this recurring bug is irritating—it bugs me too; however, it would have been better if you had attached this post to an already existing thread on this subject. A single isolated post in a new thread gives no context to the problem.
Did you have Text Comparison open? This seems to have been a common factor in many—but not all—problems of this nature. Even though the symptoms are similar, the cause is not necessarily the same. The more information we supply, the more likely that Logos will have the data necessary to fix the problem.
If you have previously enabled logging, it only takes a few seconds to attach the log archive to a post. See the link in my signature for instructions.

Dear Jack,
Here are a couple of the existing threads that give context.

Home]]>Logos 5]]>Sync-Hang issues on Mac
You were helpful in these in the past. Thanks again!
Text Comparison was not open. I am in a motel that has good wiFi, but sometimes the computer is not really connected. This is a cause of the hang, but I wish Logos would simply quit like regardless of the wiFi connection just like all the other programs.

Interesting. Mine hangs occasionally even with a continuous internet connection. It also occurs with and without TExt Comparison. So far, Logos has provided a little input, but not enough to bring encouragement that a fix is in the works.

WHY is Logos the only program with this problem? I can not remember the last time another program had trouble with a simple quit. Is Logos that much more complicated than the other programs ??? Is this also an issue for the Windows Logos program ?

Most other programs do not synchronize so much data upon quit. My belief is that the synch is needed so that the user can open a resource on a different device and have the same settings/placement.

Do not think so, as I only read of this problem with the Mac OS.
Logos does need to address this, but so far, we have heard little or nothing apart from speculation about Text Comparison. However, TC is not opened during the majority of these complaints.

I wish my son had the time and Logos would let him work on this problem. He is an excellent experienced Mac programer. He has explained to me what a program has to do to shut down.
Kindle somehow shuts down cleanly and allows one to look at the books where one left off on other devices. Kindle though, really deals with one book at a time.
I wish the default for Logos was off line. Most of the time I do not care to pick up on another device where I left off. Every other day sync with the cloud would be more than enough for me.

Hi,
I am running Logos Bible Software 5.1a (5.1.1.0589) on OS X 10.8.4
This is the Scenario that I tried a few times over a few days since the Logos 5.1 SR-3 (5.1.0.0979)
- I started Logos 5 when I am in a hotspot in a Mall and used Logos 5 for quite a while with a simple Layout for devotion.
- When done, I left Logos 5 running and run other Apps, like Mail, Word, Preview, etc.
- When I am ready to go, I closed the Lid ... which put my laptop to sleep
- When I got home about 30 minutes later, I open my MacBookPro Lid ... Logos 5 is still running
- When I quit Logos ... I got spinning rainbow wheel (as shown in the Force Quit Applications dialogue below) for about 6 minutes, before Logos actually Quit. (An improvement over Logos 5.1 SR-3 (5.1.0.0979) - where I have to actually Force Quit)
Hopefully the Logs may be useful to the developers.

Mine went a bit higher up the Chain of Command [8-|]. Hopefully, we will hear something very soon.

Jack,
There is still an active case for this issue and we continue to make changes that should reduce occurrences of this issue. As noted in this and the referenced threads, this issue is inconsistent, with some users experiencing it often and others occasionally, if at all. This makes the task of tracking down the exact cause more difficult and a fix for one problem may not necessarily fix them all. Continuing to provide logs and a sample of the process when this occurs helps us to narrow down what the occurrences have in common. We appreciate your understanding and continued assistance with this issue.

Thank you for the update. Mine installation is one of the intermittent ones. Will post logs whenever it happens. Would a description of the affected layout be helpful? How could this best be done? However, the problem seems independent of the complexity of the layout.

Jack:
I'm curious why, if there are so many threads devoted to this (as your post implies) Logos hasn't developed a fix for it. I've been running Logos 4 then 5 on a Mac for almost two years and I have never once, not ever, in either one, seen it close without requiring a Force Quit. It doesn't matter what's open, what's not open, or if nothing's open, it will not close without a Force Quit. When I mention it to tech support people on the phone I'm greeted with "Huh," and nothing more.

The reply I received from Bob Pritchett indicated that the development team has been unable to reproduce this bug. Therefore, I intend to post logs and anything else I can every time L5 freezes, and I would advise anyone else with this problem to do the same.
Unfortunately—or perhaps fortunately—I have not been able to cause L5 to freeze for several days now.

The question remains: what is "it."Michael R. Jones said:Jack:

I haven't really ever experienced this until more recently. It's possible that you and I have "it." I think that it is more likely, however, that our issues are unrelated. Have you created a thread about the issue before? Have you given the details and posted logs?macOS, iOS & iPadOS |Logs| Install

Same here, Jack. I've been having this issue and just worked up the gumption to collect the logs and now it won't freeze any more (although I am not going to tempt the thing by starting and quitting it over and over!) It's like when you take your car to a mechanic and it behaves for him.

Thanks for that! I began having all sorts of difficulty with the program freezing today. Force Quits repeatedly. After closing the Text Comparison, I have had no further freezing.

Very good. Not sure what caused my freezes to thaw.

This continues to be an issue - even after the latest update. Can we get a fix on this?

Unfortunately, this bug seems to be rather random. So far, the Logos developers have reported trouble reproducing this. We need to document our actions that preceded the freeze and faithfully include logs. Sooner or later, someone will surely include something that pinpoints the problem.
Having said all that, there is also the very real possibility that not all freezes have the same cause [:(]

I still do not understand why Logos is the only program with this issue.
The brakes on a Honda are not the same as those on a Ford,
but they are much more alike than they are different.
Do any of you have the freeze problem with programs other than Logos ?
Do any of you have a quit problem with programs other than Logos ?

Jack,
I have set up to try to capture the freeze for the last 2 weeks ... unfortunately / fortunately ... I do not have any freeze since the last one I reported [:)]

That may be because Logos is the only program that synchs with the cloud prior to shutting down.
David
I went back and re-read every post in this thread and in the two you referenced earlier, but I do not feel any more educated on this issue than before reading them [:(]. I do not know why my freezes ceased and really can't pinpoint the time when they stopped. That is one problem with random crashes. You don't remember the last time it happened when they suddenly cease.
For the record. My machine is a 2013 iMac. Haven't used my MBP since receiving an iPad for Christmas. Several years ago, a database application encountered serious problems when the computer was allowed to sleep. Since then, I have always set my machines to have insomnia. Switched from a 2005/6 Mac Pro to the iMac a few months ago. Memory may be faulty, but I do not remember a freeze since the switch.

That seems likely. I hadn't seen this issue much at all lately. Just updated my MBPro and first time I ran it after update it happened. I am at a coffee shop with spotty Internet speed. Today it's worse than usual and rally slow. May be that Logos timed out looking to sync on shut down and just crashed. It was also indexing at the time and the Indexing quit at 99% and stayed there forever and I had to go into Activity Monitor to force quite the indexer too.

I spoke too soon[:(] ... I started Logos 5.1a SR1 ... it started to downloaded something ... stop at 24% for a long time, I decided to cancel download to restart Logos 5 ... hoping that that will clear up. Ended up have to Force Quit. Hopefully the Log can be of some use.
