Personal Highliting Methods

I am keen to learn from other users how you use highlighting.

I am a new L5 user and began by creating my own styles for highlighting under different named categories (i.e. Creation, Salvation, etc.). But abandoned this because in a highlighting document the quotes are all merged together with no distinction of the categories they are coloured under (and the highlighting document does not reflect the colours). So all I gained was a visual colour in a book/ passage.

So then I created note documents under different names with assigned highlight pens. These documents brought together all the highlighted quotes under that subject (creation, salvation, etc.). I created these files on my iPad and while the note documents appear (with all the quotes) on my desktop, the categories I used to create them do not appear on the desktop.

So I can't make a shortcut on my desktop of the method I have now devised.

If any of you understood my attempt at explaining this and can help, I am open to suggestions and your experience (I have looked at the help notes that are available on the desktop programme - and no comments about UK spelling!!).

In what way did you assign highlight pens to the note documents?

the categories I used to create them do not appear on the desktop.

what do you mean by this?

So I can't make a shortcut on my desktop of the method I have now devised.

Can you expand on this please?

Thanks Graham, yes I was writing that late last night and is hard to follow in the light of morning.

Here is what I first attempted.

The Highlighting short cut (1) brings up the highlighting palette with my own Biblical Theology palette (2) that I had created. But these highlights, though created under different colours, all get merged in the same document (3) with no distinction, except for order in which they were highlighted. the only value seems to be visually in the document itself (4).

What I wanted was to build my own quotes from different sources and have them appear within the different categories that I had created. So on my iPad I started to do create highlighting categories under document section.

For example, using Highlighter pens (above) I created a document called "4.5 Gospel (Orange)" and this has kept all the quotes from different sources together in a single document - which is what I wanted. But I can't add to them from the desktop side. The categories created on my iPad are not available on my desktop. They only come in as the documents themselves.

So this is my dilemma.

1. How do I use highlighting assigned to different categories, but in such a way that the quotes are kept in their categories.

2. And that this can be used on both desktop and iPad.

so may-be someone has a better system.

Hey Stephen! I read through your post a couple of times, but I'm still confused. [:)]

I'm not sure if this is the problem, but let me quickly explain some of the differences between the desktop and mobile iOS app for highlighting.

By default, the desktop app stores notes in pallet named note documents (This behavior can be changed). In your case, the notes would be in a document named "Biblical Theology."
The desktop app can be changed at the pallet level to store notes A) in a pallet named note document, in the document of your choice or C) in the most recently used note document. (Personally, I use the latter... but you have to be on your guard at all times).
In the iOS apps, the behavior for where notes are stored is changed system wide. The same choices are available as above.

The ability to sort highlights into multiple document files is a bit tricky. If you plan to ONLY EVER have the 7 found in your Biblical Theology pallet, this can probably be done by the following:

Create a pallet for each category.
Create the highlighting style you want for each
Assign a keyboard shortcut for each category.

This means that you will have 7 pallets for your "Biblical Theology"! This system would work best on the desktop, rather than on mobile... and would fall apart pretty quickly if you needed 7 more for another system, and again 5 for another... and so on. On mobile, you would keep "pallet specific". Just make sure you don't mix up similar highlighters...

My personal opinion? This would be fairly complicated, and I am not sure what real value it would bring you. It might be more beneficial if there were a "highlight only" view of note documents, where you could see highlighted text in its entirety. At this point, notes highlighted on iOS mobile include the entire quote in the subject line of the note... but this is a bug, which could be "fixed" at any time. You should not depend upon it, or even count on current notes remaining in that state indefinitely.

Are you aware that - on the desktop - you can control which notes document is the target of a highlight.

Generically you can have either "Palette-specific note file" or "Most recent note file" - or you can specify a particular notesfile.

This is done at a palette level - by clicking on the arrow to the right of the palette name

You can do the same thing in the iPad app from the Settings menu.

You could create a new palette and set up the highlighting styles you want within it - either creating your own or copying from existing palettes. You could then set the new palette to store all highlights in a specific notesfile and this should give you what I think you are looking for.

2. And that this can be used on both desktop and iPad.

Palettes created on the desktop do sync to the iPad so they will be available for use there. What I don't believe you can do is "palette-level assignments" to notesfile (so that different palettes send highlights to different notesfiles) so you would need to set up an app-level setting for all highlights to go to a particular notesfile. This would just cause a problem if you were trying to work on two similar projects at the same time.

read through your replies (about four times each!) and have tried some of your helpful suggestions. I am grasping the possibilities a bit better but feels like I am moving from driving a small car to the space shuttle.

I need to experiment more with the options, but so far you have pointed me in a more helpful direction in how to use highlighting.
