Touchscreen/tablet pcs and Logos 4.0

I hope Logos 4.0 has tablet/touchscreen pcs in mind. I use my asus 1000h netbook (with touchscreen) with logos during sermons and bible studies. I rotate the screen 90 degrees and hold it as if it were an open book. The 1024x600 screen is actually nice in portrait mode when using Logos. I just wish it were easier to manipulate the text and navigate using a stylus or finger.

Adobe acrobat has a full screen mode in which I can read texts in portrait mode and drag the text around and navigate using a finger. I would like to see a full screen mode in Logos 4.0 that is even better to navigate with a touchscreen. If there were a touchscreen mode with easy to manipulate navigation buttons I'd be recommending it to my friends with touchscreen netbooks.

I do not currently own Logos, but am looking into it. I have a tablet PC wih a touchscreen. How integrated is the Logos software with a tablet? can I take written notes easily? Sounds like it needs some work.

I use a tablet with Logos and I think it works great. Version 4 is much more tablet friendly than Version 3.

It is important to understand that "Notes" in Logos is designed primarily for annotating resources not for use as a "note taking" tool. It can be used to take notes but you will find that it falls short as a great "note taking tool" if that is how you want to use it.

With that said, it still does an OK job for "note taking", but you may want to consider using OneNote or some other note taking tool. If you do not know about OneNote it is designed for note taking and collecting information. You can create hyperlinks to resources and resource locations in OneNote, so it works well with Logos and I am guessing that as more features are added over the next few months it will only get better.

There are a few missing features in Notes (and Logos 4) that will be added. It will just take a little time to get those in. (mainly hyperlinking to other resources)

If you take the leap, then realize that the controls are a little small in their default. This is only an issue when touching as a pen actually is more adept at granular control than a mouse. But go into settings and bump up the size of the interface to about 120% and it will work better for touching. Then you can manually control the text size to help keep it from looking like romper room text.

Great suggestion for touch with the fingers, Kevin.

This is called Program Scaling and can be found in the Logos menu - Tools|Program Settings|Accessibility

Default Text size is in the same place a little lower in the Fonts section.

One problem I have with 4.0 on my touchscreen eee 1000h has to do with
scrolling. I cannot "auto scroll" like I often do in Firefox or Word
docs. I hope I can find a solution to tihs problem, having to
repeatedly click the scroll bar arrows to scroll down a page is very
annoying.

I use Evernote for note taking and I like it.

Need? Not necessarily.

It is one solution and many find it the best. I don't like the syncing feature in Onenote. I use Evernote. But it is less ink friendly.

I just want you to be aware what the primary purpose of the tool is so that your expectations are not too high and your eyes are open when you make the purchase. Resource annotation, the intended purpose of the tool is like writing notes in the margins of a book.

One new advantage in Logos 4 is that the search engine will now search your personal files (e.g. Notes, etc) and show the results in a section of the search results. This is a great thing and makes using Notes for note taking purposes more valuable. The downside is that it is extremely limited in the ability to work with text. It is better in Version 4 but still very limited.

OneNote or Evernote, etc. are much richer tools for note taking and they also work with Logos.

We are just trying to give you some options that we have used over the years. Many people have different strategies and it depends on how you take notes and what you want to get out of it.

Notes may work very well for you.

Thanks very much for your assistance. I am an IT sales guy so I have lots of experience with computers and software. I just want to make sure I do a little research on this. I use OneNote daily and started testing Evernote recently.

Logos4 isn't responding to Drag Up/Drag Down gestures on Vista tablets, so I have to use the tiny scroll bar to scroll through a document. Not very convenient.

I think there is a reason for this but I might be misunderstanding what your seeking to do.

By design, the intent is to be able to interact with the text by selecting the text or parts of the text. Dragging to navigate (hand tool type movements) is not available in these text resources because of this purpose. It is available in tools like biblical places or the Infographics. It might be cool to have a "hand tool" button that would override this function.

What I have done to move around pages is use pen flicks. To move up and down text requires the page up and page down keystoke. So I programmed the up and down pen flicks to Page Up and Page Down.

Drag up and down is different from page up and down, especially on other text programs, especially acrobat reader where page up and down takes you to the top of the next page, skipping the bottom half while drag up and down take you up/down one screen at a time. I'm guessing Logos coded their own scroll bars instead of using the standard ones.

My 2 cents worth. Logos is not trying to be everything - there is a reason why I have shortcuts on my Logos 4 homepage for Free Mind, LingTree, Inspiration 8, TreeForm, Menologian, Universalis ... Logos doesn't claim to create great tree diagrams, enforce linguistic form constrants, calculate the daily prayer cycles of the Orthodox or Anglican communities. On the other hand, for many of us the ability of Logos 4 to search our notes is a valuable feature that I wouldn't want to give up.

What the fans of OneNote or Evernote seem to like, as I see it, is the integration of all your notes from multiple sources ... depending upon your tagging and classifying. I think of this a knowledge-base functionality for which I have used the free product General Knowledge Base for several years. [no, I haven't tried others] Unfortunately, the notes/linkage elements of Logos 4 are still a work in progress so I'm not certain that the same approach will work. But I'd still go slow re:giving up the "My Content" feature.

P.S. the same holds true for timelines, sermons, PBB's...

Trey ... are you familiar with Vista or W7 'flicks'? I have W7 with touchscreen and can both
flick a page up or down, or alternatively highlight text (both). So for example on this forum
site, I am 'flicking' away, and periodically copying text. It works fine in Logos3; just not in
Logos4 and not sure why. MS seems to be going in that direction along with Apple.

I am on Win 7 64bit

I do use pen flicks in V4, but I had to change them from their default settings.

For the up and down flicks I set them to the keystroke Page Up and Page Down. This allows me to page up and down in a resource.
For the right and left flicks I set them to the keystroke Right arrow and Left Arrow. This allows me to scroll through parallel resources.
For the Right angle up and Left Angle down (45degree) I set them to the Keystrokes CTRL+ = and CTRL+ - This allows me to zoom in and out in Biblical places and infographics.
I still have two yet unused and have not decided yet how I want to program them.

I will say that there is some inconsistency with the flicks being recognized in L4 (I don't seem to have this problem in other programs). You also need to be careful where you click in a resource because it may change the reference in the resource reference box (without changing your location on the page) .

It would be cool to have a hand tool button that could be used to drag navigate with the text resources, but I would not want to change the default clicking or pointing/selecting inside the resources.

L3 had its own gestures which were separate from the windows based pen flicks in Vista and Win7.

Ran into a bug on tablets today. If I flip through screen rotations quickly, Logos 4 get's real confused about the screen geometry, resulting in a strangly truncated window. Rotating the screen slowly 90 degrees then back again seems to restore it to normal. (This is on Vista SR2).

They are programmable in both Vista and Win7 settings. I don't have that computer in front of me this minute, but its somewhere there under Tablet or Pen settings.
