Library filters

Please.. has this been answered... ?

What has happened to the library filters? I remember the filtering working a few months ago just like on the desktop -syntax like "Edition:Logos && -Publisher:Perseus" applied a filter to not show the Perseus collection but display everything else. Now it seems all one can do is enter title and/or author words. Has the full support for filtering been deliberately removed?

As far as I know, nothing has changed in regards to filtering support. I don't think it ever worked quite how you're describing though. Here's what we do support:

You can use one of the following filters in the library search field to filter your results:

local:
title:
author:
subject:
type:
abbrev:
epubdate:
pubdate:
publisher:
series:
lang:
rating:
mytag:

(actually, there IS something new...support for "rating:" and "mytag:" was added relatively recently) When entering one of these filters, you should see an autocomplete drop down in the library search field, so you don't have to type out the entire filter name. We currently don't support stringing multiple filters together, but using any one of those alone should work.

Unfortunately, as of right now, there are no plans to put these in a dropdown list. This feature attempts to mirror the Desktop program, which also requires you to type in the filters.

I love keyboards. I love keyboard shortcuts. I love editors like emacs and vi that let you do amazing things with a few quick keystrokes without ever having to fumble for the clumsy mouse.   ... on a PC.

That paradigm doesn't satisfy on phone or tablet. There keyboards and typed out commands are clumsy and awkward. Menus, controls, gestures are much much quicker and faster.

I understand it would take a bit of reworking of the interface to fit it in, but please reconsider this at some point.

Drew, Go to any Library Public or Private and you will find the Books in Sections as to Topic then arranged by Authors.. Of course they use The "Dewey" system.  In this way when you go to the Religion Section you do not fine Civil War, American History or Even General Philosophy.

This does not seem the case in LOGOS (A Library Program as I remember the description) When you go to MY LIBRARY SHELF you find you will find all my RELIGION WORKS ... You will ALSO find the "Perseus" Collection, Plato, Aristotle, Greek Classics, Latin Classics and other works.....  ALL IN THE SAME "Self Section" namely The LOGOS Library.

So after this explanation, does LOGOS LIBRARY SOFTWARE actually allow categorizing selves so we DO NOT have to SEARCH the ENTIRE LIBRARY but SPECIFIC Shelves.. Such as RELIGION   or   PERSEUS COLLECTION????

Certainly a Library program has this capability, Search Westerns, Search SciFi..... yes some of my Android E-Book Apps can do this.

I'm not sure we have exactly what you're asking for. If you look at your resources in Logos Desktop, you'll see that many of them include "tags" that categorize the resource similar (I think) to what you're asking for. You can also create your own tags by clicking the "add tag" button and typing the tag you want to use. If you select multiple resources, you can add the same tag to all of them at once.

Unfortunately, (and I'm not sure why this is, I'll have to check) the Android and iOS apps only support filtering by the tags you enter yourself, not the default tags you see in the Desktop program. If you want to filter your library by a specific category, you'll need to add a tag to the resources you want in Logos Desktop.

Fred does have a point.  As Logos Library continues to grow, it would be nice to have some distinct categories pre-set.  I would use the  Perseus collection much more often if it were not mixed into my library of other books.  If I could have a category of Loeb classics or Language Resources or American History or Greek Philosophers etc, it would be helpful.

I understand the tagging.  But to go through a Library of 8000 resources to tag them all is not practical. 

I vigorously add new resources and old resources to categories I make up in Favorites.  I like that I can see these categories on a tablet and find things I am looking for in my library.  But I know that I am missing many books in those categories that are in my library.  It would take too much time and is nearly impossible to categorize or tag them all.  I realize Logos does a lot of tagging.  But I do not have a master key of all the tags they use.

I guess this all boils down to a wish to see some more thought put into the way we or the program is able to organize an ever growing library in a system of various categories and efficiency and to be able to find resources even when you are not sure what you are looking for...sort of like browsing a library bookshelf.  You know you are in the area of books you are interested in, and browse through the shelf until you find what you are looking for or what may help in your studies or research.
