The Case of the Disappearing Verse Picker

Open Bible
Touch the Verse in the top right to open the Verse Picker/TOC
Swipe left to Contents
Swipe left to Recent
Swipe right, all the way back to Verse

The verse picker is gone. Doesn't matter if choosing book, chapter, or verse; all the selections disappear. They do not disappear if you only swipe left once to Contents and then back.

Nice catch Randy. The verse picker is some of the very first code that was written for the Android apps and is in desperate need of some clean up. Luckily that clean up is happening now and will hopefully fix this problem. [:)]

This may be too late, but...

On my phone it is not gone when you get back, but rather compressed.

If you flip your phone into landscape mode, the buttons will become the correct size again, but somehow the app looses track of what is what. Subsequently the buttons line up for landscape mode when the phone is actually in portrait mode and vice versa. That, of course, still means that you can use the picker in landscape mode.

Two thoughts for UI interaction:

1. In the verse picker, consider enabling the swipe gesture to move between Verse, Contents and Recent panels.

2. On the home page, since you are now using a "card" paradigm for blog articles, verse of the day, etc., consider using a swipe to dismiss gesture similar to what Google has implemented in their Google Now feature.

These two additions would seem to make the app fit more tightly with the UI paradigm Android is heading in. Just my two cents.

Thanks. I almost feel ashamed accepting your gratitude though...the verse picker really should be rewritten from the ground up, but there wasn't quite time to do that right now, so my changes were akin to the little Dutch boy sticking his thumb in the hole in the dam. [;)]

This actually is already implemented. I'm guessing the reason you haven't noticed it is because it doesn't work if you start swiping on top of one of the verse picker items. There's a bug there that I haven't been able to track down yet. You'll notice if you swipe from the very right edge of the screen on the verse picker, it should work, and then it will work anywhere on the Contents/Recent screens.

Yeah, we think that would be cool too. It hasn't happened yet because given the way the home page is structured (some items should be swipe-able, some shouldn't) it's not a super easy thing to add. That being said, it's probably not a super hard thing either, we've just had higher priorities trying to get all the other bugs smoothed out before the stable release of v4.

Hi Drew,

I look forward to your final implementation of the passage chooser, but the current stop-gap solution is definitely improved.

I went back and checked on the swiping between Verse, Contents and Recent sections. They do in fact swipe, just as you said. I should have checked that more carefully before posting.

Yes I've reproduce the issue on a TF201 running Android 4.1.1. I'll write up a case.
