Strong has an aspect of two related words found Rom. 5:10, 11, that I do not find in other lexicons. The order of the words as they are found in Romans is reversed from the order below...2643 is in verse 11 & 2644 is in verse 10. They are also both found in 2 Cor. 5:18.
2643 καταλλαγή [
katallage /kat·al·lag·
ay/] n f. From 2644; TDNT 1:258; TDNTA 40; GK 2903; Four occurrences; AV translates as “reconciliation” twice, “atonement” once, and “reconciling” once.
1 exchange. 1a
of the business of money changers, exchanging equivalent values.
2 adjustment of a difference, reconciliation, restoration to favour. 2a in the NT of the restoration of the favour of God to sinners that repent and put their trust in the expiatory death of Christ.
2644 καταλλάσσω [
katallasso /kat·al·
las·so/] v. From 2596 and 236; TDNT 1:254; TDNTA 40; GK 2904; Six occurrences; AV translates as “reconcile” six times.
1 to change, exchange,
as coins for others of equivalent value. 1a to reconcile (those who are at variance). 1b return to favour with, be reconciled to one. 1c to receive one into favour.
My question is whether Strong is onto something the others have missed (I've seen it happen before), or has he missed the boat?
Thanks.
