Praticum - just installed - causes Logos 5 to crash

I just received an email indicating that Practicum was available for download. I opened up Verbum and "Practicum: Learn to Use Verbum" was installed. I clicked on the link and it opened to the list of chapters. When I selected a chapter Verbum just crashed. I tried opening up Logos 5 (Verbum) again. This time as soon as I click on the link to "Practicum: Learn to use Verbum" chapter 8 pops up and then Logos 5 crashes. I tried rebooting my computer and had the same problem with chapter 8 popping up and then Logos 5 crashing. My operating system is Windows 7.

Help! After the long wait for this product I'm certainly surprised it isn't working now!

Hi Greg,

I'm sorry to hear that the Practicum resource is failing to work on your system. Could you post logs from the crash, so that we can try to identify the problem? Instructions for diagnostic logging can be found here.

Also, if you haven't already done so, make sure your Logos is up-to-date. Version 5.2 and the latest service release (SR-2) contain some fixes that address some problems we encountered in testing Practicum earlier. (I can't say whether your problem is related or not. From your description, it doesn't sound exactly like something we encountered. Nonetheless, updating should give you the best experience.)

I am using windows 7 like Greg Rose and am having the same problems, "Logos Bible Software 5 has stopped working" "Windows is checking for a solution tot he problem". I updated my logos.

However, I can run Practicum on my ipad without any problems.

Louis I am having the same problem as the other two users. Logs attached. Incidentally the product download while I was still on 5.2 SR-1 and did not crash when I opened it. As soon as I installed 5.2 SR-2 is when it started crashing every time I open Practicum.

I tried running some other media collection resources that are video based and they also crash. One was an older one from the A Workman Approved by God Series: Part 1 on Creeds, Confessions and Catechisms. The other was the more recent from the Faithful Living Series - Abraham. I'm not sure if I uploaded these two files correctly or not.

I looked at Task Manager and the only program shown as running was Outlook.

I checked the Logos version and I am running the latest - Version 5.2 and the latest Service release 2. I use the software just about every day so I keep this current.

I'm running the Windows 7 64-bit operating system (and I keep this up-to-date). My computer is a Dell Studio XPS 9000, Intel Core i7-920 processor with 8MB L3 Cache 2.66 GHz, 8 GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz, ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GN GDDR5, SoundBlaster X-Fi Extreme Audio. I use Norton 360.

I tried opening Practicum two ways. First by clicking on it on the home page. Secondly by navigation to the Library and attempting to open it there. Both time it crashed Logos. I should note that the very first time I opened Practicum it brought up the table of contents. When I selected a chapter it was at that point it crashed. After that, each time I tried to open Practicum it skips the table of contacts, tries to open that chapter that I had previously tried to open and then crashes.

I was able to get a workaround to function (at least partially) using your train of thought here. I'm not sure what the other user you mentioned tried, but here is what I did:

The error log, as you indicated, and as I had noticed as well, shows that it is clearly using a bad path reference (in this case, a bad escape character for Windows). In my case:

'X:\Alec%20Seelau\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\25o25lsz.lby\WebCache\4emnzbkr.ym0'

My directory is "Alec Seelau" (without the quotes, obviously, but with the space) and yet the program thinks it is called "Alec%20Seelau". The notion to create the directory is sound, but it needs the rest of the application files to function as well. To accomplish this, I did two things:

1.) I created the bad directory, "X:\Alec%20Seelau". I didn't create any subdirectories under it, just the one I needed. I did this through the GUI, but you could do it in the command prompt with:

mkdir "X:\Alec%20Seelau"

Other users will have to adjust this pathing to suit their error message.

2.) I created a junction point inside of that new directory to point to the existing application files. This let's the OS think that anything within the junction point is really under the new, bad directory (while the old, good directory also remains intact and viable). I did this via command prompt with:

mklink /J "X:\Alec%20Seelau\AppData" "X:\Alec Seelau\AppData"

This creates a symbolic link, a sort of shortcut (but with some different behavior). The first path is the directory I am creating (in this case, the AppData directory in the new, "bad" path X:\Alec%20Seelau ) and the second path is where I want the first path to link to (in this case, I want it to link to the real AppData directory found in X:\Alec Seelau). Any program that navigates to X:\Alec%20Seelau\AppData will actually be pointing to the AppData folder on X:\Alec Seelau\AppData, but the link causes it to think it's in the new location (the one with the %20).

Sorry, that was probably a poor explanation, but I wanted to make sure I got this logged before I left work.

Anyway, the program appears not to crash now. I can't tell if the video is actually working, however, as I am over RDP and it doesn't *appear* to work, but that could be the connection. I'll test it again and update when I get home.

Confirmed: when I got home, I am able to see the video properly. This workaround will work if you have the same error in your log. Hope this helps--if anyone has questions on the process, please let me know.

5.2 SR-3 seems to have fixed the problem. Now I have a different issue. When I chose "full-screen" mode for the video tutorial the window becomes bigger than my monitor. When that happens I can't always see what the instructor is doing since part of the screen is not visible.

How do I fix this issue?

As a workaround, you can get the video to a decent size by opening the tab in a floating window and maximizing it.

I am using 5.2 SR-3 but my whole PC freezes at the end of each video requiring a reboot, so cant do memory dumps etc, and was told log file didnt help.

Can we watch videos outside of Logos, It is frustrating having to switch of and restart with every video!

Any advice of what I can do to help you identify problem

Just to get a clear description of what you're experiencing: You seem to be able to play any video (at first). The video plays all the way through, but then at the end, your whole PC freezes. Does the freeze occur immediately or only when you try to navigate to another video?.

If you have any other video resources (for example, Faithlife Study Bible Videos), do those behave the same way?

Freezing up the entire PC (requiring a hard reboot) typically indicates low-level problems outside of Logos 5. (It's possible for Logos 5 to hang itself, but extremely difficult--on a modern operating system--to hang the entire computer.)

Make sure all your video drivers are up-to-date, and check for Windows Updates, etc.

My video card driver was out of date. I have updated it (with a few problems) but since then I have not had any recurrence of the problem with Logos and watching the Practicum videos.

So it looks as it is was a low level driver problem
