Congrats to Fr Devin Roza

I don't know him personally except through reading some of his very helpful posts on this forum, but fellow Logosian, Fr Devin Roza, just published what seems to be his first book through Logos, or shall I rather say, Verbum: Symbols and Types of the Sacraments
What better way to congratulate him than purchase the book?

Congratulations, Devin.
I know that some published authors drop by the forums from time to time, but is this the first time "one of us" has published (in Logos!)?

I was wondering whether this wasn't someone I know from the forums. Fr. Devin, the product page doesn't give much information on the contents. Would you please give us an abstract? It would be much appreciated.

Thanks everybody! I have been working on this book for about 2 years now, and it has been quite the enriching experience! I hope that you find using it as helpful as I did putting it together.
The idea for the book actually came about when I was reflecting on the fact that Bible commentaries today tend to be so different than Bible commentaries of the Church Fathers from the first centuries. They were so steeped in typology and symbolism, and many recent commentaries don't quite know what to make of that!
The problem that many recent commentaries confront is that "typology" deals with the realm of Divine Providence, a realm that we cannot actually know directly. That is, a person, and event, a symbol, etc., prefigures something that is going to come to its fullness in Jesus Christ. This is part of God's divine plan.
The typology of the Church Fathers can sometimes be exaggerated, and so the modern reader faces the problem, which types or symbols are valid and which are not?
There are many ways to confront this problem, but the way I take up in this book is to ask the question, "What does the Church, in the Bible, the Catechism, and her liturgy, consider to be a type or a symbol of the sacraments?" This study attempts to answer that question as exhaustively and succinctly as possible.
By "liturgy" I mean principally the following:
1. The Roman Missal and the Lectionary
2. The Liturgy of the Hours
3. The rites of the sacraments
The Liturgy of the Hours in particular is incredibly rich, with hundreds of readings from the Church Fathers, a very large percentage of whom are from the first 4 or 5 centuries of the Church.
So, without further ado, I will now post some example pages. Hopefully I won't make any marketing experts unhappy. You guys here certainly deserve a little extra a little early.

Not all the authors in the Liturgy of the Hours are included. Only those who make reference to symbols or types of the sacraments. Here are a little over a third of the included authors:

And some example pages from the "types", just so you can get an idea of what this is like. Note that this is basically a "final draft" form, so there may be corrections, format changes, hyperlinks need to be added, etc., etc.
There are different sections of each "type". The OT Background and NT Background sections present texts from the Scriptures that serve as background to the topic on hand, regardless of whether they have anything to do with the sacraments as such. The Catechism background is similar, but with respect to the Catechism. The Type section lists those texts that explicitly or at least quite clearly refer to the topic as a prefiguration of the sacrament. The Related section mentions other topics in the book that are related.
After this comes the summary of the topic as it is found in the texts of the Bible, the Catechism, and the Liturgy, with the index of which texts say what. Obviously all these links will be live eventually.
Finally, some of the more beautiful and relevant texts are actually included in the book in the greyish boxes, in this case a text from the Easter Vigil celebration.

Here is the topic on the Passover Meal / Paschal Lamb as a prefiguration of the Eucharist. This topic is very long, 9 or 10 pages, here are just a couple of those pages.
Note that sometimes the OT and NT Background, as well as the Catechism background are quite extensive.
A few pages later...

Thank you very much for that information. I need to ask one further question. Does any of your book deal with the book of Revelation? My personal view after much study is that the Eucharist ("first love", "eat with you") and baptism/confirmation (white garments) are important to the understanding of the book.

Yes, there are quite a few references to Revelation.
Speaking of which, the topic of "White Garment / Wedding Garment" was for me one of the most beautiful topics to prepare. There are 4 pages of references, but here is just one and a half of those pages, with a reference or two to Revelation so you can get an idea.
A little further down...

Here is an example of a "Symbol". In this case, I am going to post the full topic of "Seal" with relation to the sacrament of Confirmation. You can get an idea of what one of the more extensive topics is like. I think with this I will have give you quite a complete idea of what this resource is like.
One last thing - I have done my best to not present so much my own ideas about any of these topics, but to simply summarize and organize the ideas that are present in the Bible, the Catechism, and the Liturgy.

This looks as if I would use it a great deal. Thank you.

Congrats, Devin. I ordered it too as soon as I saw it show up in pre-pub, and knew I recognized your name from the forums. Looks like it's picking up orders quite quickly. It's already "Almost there!" Looking forward to it.

Every once in a while as I have been working on this book and would come across a post or two of yours on the forum I have thought, "I'll bet MJ's going to love this." Hope so anyway!

Yes, it looks like it's picking up orders quite quickly, and has now hit "Under Development" after just a week or so. It has also been fun and a nice surprise watching the "Likes" go up - now close to 150! Thanks to everyone!

Peace, Brother Devin! *smile* I am a retired Confessional Lutheran Pastor living just East of Toronto in Oshawa, Ontario! I just ordered your book and look forward "with great relish" to reading and studying it! I really appreciate your listing the information you did in this thread! Thank you!Fr Devin Roza said:MJ Smith said:This looks as if I would use it a great deal. Thank you.

Edit: BTW, when I ordered your book, I noticed that this is a "Verbum" book! Is it one of the first Verbum books that Logos has published?? What can you tell us, please!

Probably it is, if you count the 'Catholic Topical Index' as a Verbum 'feature' rather than a published 'book' since it's not possible (currently at least) to purchase it individually but rather through a Verbum base package.Milford Charles Murray said:Is it one of the first Verbum books that Logos has published??
If I understand the intent of Fr Devin's book correctly, this looks like another wealth of links/references to other resources in your library as well; which enhances the value of your Logos/Verbum library as a whole too. Looking forward to it!

Peace Milford! Thank you for you kind words - I love reading your messages here on the forum, which are always accompanied by that "sweet perfume of Christ". Thank you!
Yes, this is probably the first Verbum book properly speaking! It has been developed since the beginning with Verbum in mind, and was developed using Verbum (it would have been utterly impossible to do a project like this without the power of searching that Logos has). Hopefully it will be the first of many such projects! The idea is to eventually publish it in printed form as well, but it is designed with a similar "digital first" mentality that is behind the Lexham projects. Andrew Jones and his team have been a great support these last two years working on this.
