    Hi Tes

Sorry to hear you are having problems.

The developers would need more information to try and track this down.

    • What version of the app are you using?
    • What version of iOS?
    • Is there anything particular you are doing when it crashes or does it seem fairly random?
    • After it crashes can you upload support information to this thread? (go to the Help menu, choose "Send Support Info", change the prefilled email address to yours and - after sending - post the contents you will receive)

on First Generation IPads, the IOS stops at 5.

    Tes,

I also have a first generation IPad and the newest version (version 4) of the Logos app should work.  It does for me.  I still have crashes sometimes, but it is because too many processes are going on at the same time.  It is trying to update reading plans, notes, and checking for book updates.

It does not happen often, but when it does, I have found that if I restart it three or four times it works great.

On my IPhone 5S, with the Logos app, what takes about two or three minutes on the first generation IPad, takes only a few seconds on the phone.

Are you running the latest version of the Logos for iOS app?

    Kevin,

From the information Tes posted - Logos for IOS support info(4.0.2.2249) info:zip - it looks as though he is running the latest released version, 4.0.2 but wasn't able to attach the zip file.

Tes - could you try again to attach the zip file with support info to this thread?

    Hi Tes,

I just recounted my adventures installing Logos and Vyrso on my newly acquired iPad first generation tablet.(It is my second iPad, but it has lots more memory.)

    http://community.logos.com/forums/t/79728.aspx

For each app there was a definite "settling in" period during which the library was not responsive and the apps tended to crash frequently.  It seems that Logos is trying to do a lot of preparation right after an install.  At first, I was unable to download more than two books without a crash.  After fussing with it about an hour it let me initiate a full download and behaved well after that.  It did seem to be sensitive to needing a strong internet connection.

I notice that during the period of problems my notes files are not present.  Many people report that they cannot see their entire library initially.  Additionally, I noticed that a lot of recently read books did not bubble up to the top of the library list which was sorted by "recent".

Note that every time you reload the app you will have to go through this rebuilding period again.  Therefore, I would suggest being patient.  I also had better success by setting my iPad to not ever go to sleep until my notes files were all loaded.

On a different thread they have suggested going to the home page and typing in 'rebuild index' (in lower case) in the reference box. I just tried this on my iPad, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a visual cue to inform me of when it is done.

David - Please be careful about taking someone else's medicine, and certainly don't advise someone else to do likewise! The "rebuild index" command is completely unrelated to your issue. I am unsure of the issue Tes is dealing with [How many books do you have downloaded Tes?], but there is nothing in his post to suggest to me the same problem as you are having.

I did want to clear up one more thing: There isn't a "settling in" period. Rather, the app is frantically trying to download everything you have told it to do. The reason highlights didn't appear when you first loaded the app is because the underlying note document hadn't download yet. I am unsure of how you have organized your note documents, but smaller files are better than large files. I know that you said you like to highlight (I do too!). Have you organized those documents in any way?

I know that you want the convenience of having your entire library with you at all times, but you will continue to have these issues. You made it worse by buying a first gen device and then download the resources to two apps! If you really want to have your entire library, I would suggest choosing one app. I think you could run into more problems in the future if you don't. (keeping resource doc files up to date twice; making sure note & highlights sync properly, etc).

What I experienced and described is indeed a "settling in period".  You suggest that it is due to the download activity.  I would contend that there is also an index building activity and an activity to construct the library view which has to be sorted in the sort order dictated by the local settings.  This period of stalling and crashing occurs prior to my attempt of a full download and is unrelated to my use case of fully downloading my database.  My stalls and crashes immediately after a fresh install sound exactly like what Tes is experiencing after his fresh installs.

I would contend that the apps are unstable on the older iPad's during at least some period after the initial install.  The HW and SW I am using is very close to that being employed by Tes.  Thus, my recent experience performing two installations does appear to be relevant.  The older devices have slower processors and, probably more importantly, less RAM for execution.  The developers of the Flipboard application do not even pretend to support the iPad generation one due to lack of memory.  (I have this problem in spades on my Google Nexus One phone where I am constantly running out of execution space.)

I didn't mention lack of highlighting.  I did mention that my notes file list was partial until the crashing and stalling quit.  This led me to believe that downloading the notes files was contributing to the instability.

I have followed the general consensus on the Logos desktop forums that highlighting files should be kept small by opening a new note file for each resource by default.  This has resulted in a large number of fairly small files.  Of course, sometimes the notes need to be done topically and will span several resources; e.g., my study on "Ordo Salutis".

I will grant that the 'rebuild index' advice may not help a bit.  But for some folks, it was necessary to get Logos to complete the setting up of the library.

I performed the downloads for Logos and Vyrso at different times.  I don't understand why two complete downloads would be more unstable than one.  I understand it will take twice the sync time, but not necessarily more instability.

I tend to "kill" apps I'm not using.  This is done by double clicking the iPad physical button then long pressing one of the icons for the apps which show up at the bottom of the window.  You will get a red circle with a horizontal white bar on the upper corner of each icon representing applications which are still in memory.  Use the red circle to dump apps no longer being used.  My son and I have noted that some of the games tend to clog up memory until to you kill them this way.

I bring this up because I noticed that my Faithlife application wouldn't even start until I had killed everything else which had been running.  Faithlife had been displaying an initial splash screen then crashing.  Updating to the last version did not help.  Killing all the other apps allowed Faithlife to run.

Being hip is spendy specially when your gadget crashes. You can have it repaired or reprogrammed. That way, your iPad can be fix but you will loss old files.
