Minimal Crossgrade to Logos 5 Worth it?

Hi All,

I've been a Logos user for a long time and have recommended it to numerous individuals. Despite some of its original launch issues, I have really appreciated the new Logos 4 upgrade from the old Libronix 3 (but I still miss the free PBB's). I currently keep Libronix 3 around just in case.

So far, I have not upgraded to Logos 5 because of the cost. I have received some Christmas money for books, but, I'm considering the minimal crossgrade as well.

Those who have done the 4-5 minimal crossgrade upgrade - do you have any advice? Was it worth it to you? Would you recommend it?

It all depends what you want!

If you have a Logos 4 base package, don't fancy the Logos 5 upgrade resources but want the dataset features then the Logos 5 Crossgrade is right for you. If you don't have a Logos 4 base package then you need the Logos 4 Min Crossgrade to enjoy the Logos 5 Min Crossgrade.

Thanks Dave and "Smiling"! Just a bit more information: I did the full upgrade to 4 from 3 which cost a good amount last time. I have the Silver Scholars (I'm not sure what it is technically) in 4. The minimal crossgrade to 5 with discounts is still $130 and the full upgrade is over $200 (and that's just to Silver 5 with just a few resources that I'm interested in).

I'm not sure what the datasets do for me Dave. Maybe you could enlighten me. I don't really use the Lexham resources that much - I'm a more traditional old school greek/hebrew resource user (NA 27, BHS, UBS 4, BDAG/HALOT kind of guy with some reverse interlinears thrown in for daily use)

My Logos is updating all the time - so "Smiling" don't I already have the software?

And yes, I'm sadly aware of all my Libronix PBB's from version 3 not working. It's why I still have both versions 3 and 4 installed on my PC.

I did the minimal crossgrade about a year ago, and have found that the additional datasets are of little practical value to me. I was a L4 Platinum user with many additional resources; and although the datasets are interesting, I'm not sure that I'd have spent the money on them vs. a few new books if I were given the opportunity again. Others are enthusiastic over them, and I'm sure they will give you their perspective.

I too came the conclusion that the new datasets for me was not worth the cost. I don't know about you, but if I need to ask for an opinion if I should get something, just asking the question now tells me that the answer for me is "no," and I am attempting to justly an expense that I do not need. Again, this is me.

I think the new functionalities in L5 (crossgrade/datasets) have been a waste of time.

But not the idea ... instead the implementation is poor or 'on its way'. Looking back, I'd still have purchased them, but I'm in high hopes that Logos will continue to flesh them out in a more usable (and non-evangelical) way. I'm evangelical but don't need a small mirror.

The problem with my hopes, is that Logos tends to 'do' an area of the program and then park it for several years.

I'm satisfied with the datasets included in Bronze. I have tried out Silver but didn't like any of the resources in it except 1 (the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church), I have at no point wanted a Minimal Crossgrade for the additional dataset(s).

Same here... and after seeing similar comments about the crossgrade, I re-figured the cost to upgrade to silver & went that route (with crossgrade, to get ALL the datasets)... The main additional datasets I use are the additional graphics that came with the new L5 datasets AND Timeline (which is handy for finding the approximate date stuff happened). Other than that, I haven't used them much... Search is just too easy... [:)]

I bought the min. crossgrade just recently and find that I don't use the datasets all that often. The sense lexicon is the most useful to me, and it is nice to have. I just find that I don't use it very frequently. I did however get the Greek English interlinear Septuagint with the crossgrade and that makes it more than worth what I paid for it. It's nice to have the original source of so many OT quotes in the New. If you don't have the Septuagint, and you would like to study the NT use of it occasionally I think it would be worth it, but if you do have the Sep, I guess it just depends on how often you study word meanings, which the sense lexicon is really useful for (however it does not include meanings for conjunctions - which I was particulary bummed about).

The LXX greek/interlinear was designed for those fluent in greek, who were struggling with english.

Well, actually, Logos 5 is free, so you don't need to spend any money on it.

The Minimal Crossgrade is designed for users who want to use all features, which especially refers to using the original languages tools. You may want to check out the listing of tools, features and datasets on the product page.

Also, see the comparison between MC and Core Datasets which won't give you all, but some of the new features (note that many of the very helpful resources bundled in MC are available for free if you "buy" the Faithlife Study Bible. ) The really unique things about MC are the Clause search and related databases.

One very relevant thing to know: for base packages as well as for the MC, dynamic pricing applies, i.e. you pay only for what you not already own. Say you buy an upgrade to L5 silver, this will cost you less than a new Silver package would be, since your existing library is taken into account (see the "new to me" filter on the Comparison page). If you then already have Silver, and the free FSB as well, only a small part of the MC will be new to you, and thus you may only pay a small sum (e.g. $10-20) for the MC if you buy it on top. Don't buy it now to get an upgrade to another package later!
