It Was The Best Of Times, It Was The Worst Of Times, SSD style

Well, the hard drive crashed in my desktop Saturday, had the important stuff backed up so there wasn't really any loss. Just a big pain, had to swap in my backup drive, reinstall Windows 7, reinstall the 8.0 upgrade, reinstall Media Center, reinstall the 8 to 8.1 upgrade, and now the process of reinstalling software. Just a big waste of a day.

Anyway, this gives me an excuse to install a secondary SSD. Found an offer I couldn't refuse on a little 80GB refurbished one, not the latest or fastest, but still a sight better than a fast mechanical drive.

The SSD is going to be primarily for Logos, and I was wondering if anyone had any Logos SSD / Secondary drive tips before I install?

There are more folks that have far better knowledge than I do, but here are some thoughts and experiences:

I made this plunge several months ago and do not regret it. My motherboard is a bit older and only supports the 3bg transfer speeds, but the difference was very noticeable.

I did a clean install of Windows 7 and everything else and did not do a transfer via software. I highly recommend investing the time doing this. It sounds like you will be anyway, since your HD crashed.

Logos is faster to load, change layouts, and at building an index. The search speeds did not seem that big of a difference.

Other programs - like MS Office, etc. open almost instantly. Everything is crazy-fast. Logos is not crazy-fast but much faster.

Thanks for the info. I already have the OS and Office installed on my replacement HDD (had to get the checkbook up and running quickly, plus it's a performance drive that runs 7200RPM, with a big cache, already a improvement over the old one). It was only when I started thinking about reinstalling Logos that I thought about the SSD, and when I found the good price I took the plunge.

If the performance of the SSD is near as good as I'm expecting, I will likely wait to replace the drive for the backup unit (I'll just throw an old IDE I have in there) and save my pennies and wait for continued price drops on large SSD's until I can afford something to clone the main drive to.

Paul if could have used the SSD for the OS and Logos only, and the HDD for all your other data files and MS Office. Performance should be higher even if the system is a older one.

I just changed my notebook over to a SSD, and use a old drive as a backup connected by the usb. I only have 120GB or so used on my SSD, I also added a SD card to hold pictures and misc other files I wanted access too.

I really did not think I could get down to under 130GB, but I did and now my backup is a 1TB HDD.

Well I have the drive installed and Logos installed on it, and these are my findings:

Initial Indexing: No noticeable change
Program Start (first start of the day): About twice as fast. This is one that surprised me, I wasn't expecting any change. After all, bloat-ware is bloat-ware, and no matter how fast the drive is it still takes time to load poorly optimized code into memory, but it made a difference.
"Preparing your Library" after a new resource download: About twice as fast.
Indexing a couple of new resources: twice as fast or better.
Home page load: About twice as fast.
Displaying the Library drop down list: Speed increase of about 5 to 10 fold.
Resource opening: Speed increase of about 5 to 10 fold.
Displaying parallel resource sets the first time: At least twice as fast.
The display of like resources to choose from after opening a new tab: Speed increase of about 5 to 10 fold.
Opening a study on John 3:16 in the "Go" box: Speed increase of about 5 to 10 fold.

Overall, an excellent improvement.
