Dear Logos programers: Can we Please have more options

I am sure there are workarounds and many shortcuts I can memorize, but can I please have some more buttons to click when I'm reading my Bible and doing studies? Logos 3 is filled with options on any screen, for example, to highlight. I happened to have a button on my mouse set to Ctrl K to apply the markup while I read, but now in Logos 4, I have still yet to find how to apply a markup manually. This is just one example of the fact that there are simply not enough buttons and options. I imagine that was the goal, to make it look neater? But I feel you have gone backwards in the functionality of this wonderful program. I am still strongly considering the return of Logos 4 Platinum and going back to 3, so could you let me know if there will be more options added in the future or if this is what you anticipate this progam being like? Oh and two other things that would be very beneficial to me and my studies, to provide an option to have a pop up window for Greek words in the NAS as it was in Logos 3. The information window is a distraction to me while I study. I like just one screen open that doesn't move. And for the highlighting function that comes with making a note, can you make it where the box does NOT add a color, as in Logos 3. I can workaround this as well, but it would be so nice to just have a color option of "no color" as before instead of having colors plastered all over my Bible text as I make lots and lots of notes. Thanks a lot for your hard work in making this program. I know you can't suit everyone perfectly, but I'd really like some more options back.

You'll find highlighting on the Tools menu in L4 (under Library).
Have you got the interlinear turned on in the NASB? (Look for the interlinear button at the top of the resource.) That should provide you with the information you need.
Can't help you on note colours, I'm afraid.

Thanks for your replies, but these are the very issues I am referring to. Logos 3 had shortcuts like Ctrl K, but it also has BUTTONS, where I can easily see an option to apply visual markup. Now I have to go up to tools, click highlighting, wait for the box to open and then click the right type. That to me is a serious downgrade in the effeciency of this task from Logos 3, where I simply clicked a button. My question to the programmers is, will these type features be added. Also the Greek access in the interlinear again requires extra steps and it requires to have other material open.

If you go to Tools and click and drag Highlight to the blank space to the right of the Command Bar in Version 4 it will become a shortcut button for the tool.

The information window is a distraction to me while I study. I like just one screen open that doesn't move.

The information window, in my opinion, is one of the single best features introduced in Logos4.

Why not make a shortcut to actually apply the visual markup that I can put up top? I feel your pain. I love to have the ability to set things up the way I like it. I love to be able to choose to "do it this way" or to "do it that way". When I first opened up Logos and looked at the menus I thought "where is everything." I assumed it was just because I was using a beta and that I would see things appear. then Bob said "what you see as far as features is what, for the most part, will be in the initial release." I got scared. After using the program for 5 or so months now I think it is lightyears ahead of L3. Some will certainly think I'm exaggerating but I am spending for less time messing with settings, downloading resources, and stuff like that and far more time using the program productively (OK, I'm spending far more time on this forum). Yes, in some areas the user is forced to adapt to Logos' way of thinking as far as how something should be done. But once given the chance I've found that their method makes a lot of sense.

I know for some this will not sit well. Many will want Logos to take a Burger King approach. Create a program that does everything many different ways and let the user "do it their way." This forces Logos to support all those different ways of doing things and confuses new users when you say "you can do this or this or this or this to get such and such done." Typically new users want to here "do this and this will happen." With the new approach Logos can pour more man hours into resource development and feature enhancements, and less man hours into developer support. At least that's the hope down the road.

I'm sure Bob loves it when people like me presume to know his thinking on things like this :-) I'm sure if he reviewed my posts for a grade they would be filled with red digital bleeding. However I think I've picked up a good bit of my feel for where Logos is heading from his posts.

Exactly. For more stability and lower maintenance costs one limits the feature which have little or no impact on performance or workflow. I, for one, am quite willing to do it the "Logos way" rather than tolerating faulty software that does it "my way" (the only logical and correct way to do it is my way of course)

I think we can all understand your feelings David. Sometimes when things change it is hard for people to learn new ways and it is also true that Logos 4 needs some improvements. Logos is glad to accept any constructive feedback that will help them improve the product for their customers.

And, for the record, I am not offended by your comment, as the old adage goes, "one mans trash is another man's treasure." I also realize that some people have trouble expressing themselves in written form and so trying to put into words what you want improved is probably just harder for you than other posters. I guess it is also possible that you are not here looking for help, but just need to vent your anger in a public forum. That is also not uncommon for some people given their personality.

However, if you would like to take the time to gather your thoughts on what specific options are missing that you would like to have reintegrated to L4, please feel free to share those at any time.

I have used Logos products for 10+ years, and have been an early adopter of all their upgrades, without serious problems so I don't think I have a problem "learning new ways" I do not believe what I have been able to see of this version before it crashes every time I try to use it is not an improvement over what I've been using.

Certainly you must know that your experience isn't the one that is expected right?

So limiting your vocabulary to "piece of junk" isn't a very accurate way to express yourself, espectially since you've stated that you have the ability to do so clearly.

You seem to be having a problem with even getting Logos to fire up; in the world of software nobody can predict all configurations; it's impossible, so there are bound to be issues that crop up on users' machines.

If you are patient, we can help you eliminate these issues...if you want that is...at this point, from reading what you've written, I'm still unclear if that IS what you want.

If it is...we would like to offer suggestions that have worked for others and might work for you. If that's not what you want and you just want to vent and have a V3 clone...then V4 might not be for you.

Well, since I don't know you outside of this forum, I can only offer observations based on how you chose to present yourself here. My earlier post was intended to be an encouragement to put together some constructive thoughts beyond "this is junk" that might actually get your problems solved or help Logos developers respond to your specific needs. They do want your feedback in making continued improvements. I think once the program is up and running, you will be able to get a better view of what it does. Good luck to you.

David, I have been a very critical person of v. 4 in this forum. I think Logos pushed it out the door before it grew up.

That said, I hope you will be more constructive in your criticism and seek out help in a fruitful way. I was frustrated like you. I beta tested it and never real got to a point where I could actually use it until just before they released it. I did a review for the mag I write for and wish I had waited till January or February before doing it because after I got used to being able to use it and had some of my questions answered here, I like it more.

It sounds like right now there is some incompatibility with your system/install. Have you gone through the steps provided by others in the other thread you started? What was the result? We want to help. That's why I hang out here. Learn, help, and I've come to enjoy interacting with these people. even Joe Miller (that avatar pic looks like something other than what it is dude)

While I have modified some work priorities to avoid crashes (certain pastes into notes), I've not experienced systemtic crashing, if you provide examples of what you are doing when it crashes and identify your operating system we may be able to solve the problems.

I'll play devil's advocate here. Please programmers do not increase complexity and destabilize the L4 by adding additional options to reach features we already have. Use your time to complete the currently promised features (missing features) and then adding additional tools for research not currently well supported such as textual analytics, intertextual inference searches, etc.

You are absolutely right to not see a program that always crashes as an improvement. Fortunately, the crashes I have had have all been easily repeated and as easily avoided. I will plead guilty to sometimes becoming defensive with respect to L4. I have been using L3 for notes so I'm obviously not a totally happy camper. However, in several areas, L4 is so much superior that it is my tool of choice. I have sympathy for those who have had continuing crashes but hope that they can recognize that they are a minority and Logos is willing to work with them to identify and correct the problems. And, yes, your personal frustration can justify griping, complaining ...

Peter, this is an old thread from December. Joe was not yet a Logos employee and he was goofing off with someone who he knows from beta testing. The Logos badge got applied to all his old posts when he was just acting as a user and not an employee.

In L3 and now in L4, I often take the highlighting window (with all the styles) and drag it to my second monitor. I can then quickly click on any style to be applied. Does this come close to what you're looking for?

Perhaps Logos could at some point open up the program code on some level to allow more advanced users the ability to write scripts that expand the functionality of the program as was paossible with L3 using Java script. This way the program out of the box remains simple but allows others such as myself to add some custom macros and features. This woulld seem to me to be the best of both worlds and please both camps at once. Even those who don't know how to use scripting language coulld benfit from those who do as they post their scripts online.

This is a very common misconception about L3. There is no merit in calling it "faulty" in regard to custom buttons, handling of notes, bibliography, hey even "speed search"

I haven't a clue why you thought I considered L3 faulty. The only feature I would have said that about L3 was the verse mapping which I knew Logos was aware of and was correcting. Even there I would have blamed the data model not the coding.
