LOGOS 4 Total disaster

I foolishly ordered an upgrade to Logos 4 from my Silver edition that I've used for years on my PC for several years. After almost 24 hours of updating via a VERY fast internet connection, I finally tried to open it. EVERY TIME I open LOGOS 4 is crashes.

I wish LOGOS had gotten this right before they foisted it on us.

I"m going back to version 3 that at least works.

Are you interested in help? or just venting? I'm running Logos 4 on an old XP system with success and enjoy it greatly.

What's your system specs, to start off with?

Next time you start up Logos 4, hold down the control key to make it create a log file for that session (more info here: http://wiki.logos.com/Diagnostic_Logging)

I will try to make this work, but my gut tells me to get a refund and keep using Logos 3

Wow, I'm glad I missed out. I downloaded it late last week and have been thoroughly impressed with nearly every aspect. It's far easier to use than L3. I suggest you try unistalling and reinstalling the product. Sounds like something got corrupted while you were installing it. I downloaded Platinun with my added products from L3 (over 7GB) and after the VERY LONG download, it installed fine and took about 4 hours or so to index. Logos is always happy to refund, if you can't get satisfaction, but I highly recommend one more try before going that route.

I have a laptop with a 2Ghz processor, 80GB harddrive, and 2GB of RAM running XP3 SP3, and it's fine for me.

Did the .NET framework install go ok? Advice on the wiki says:

A crash immediately on starting the program (without even seeing the
Sign In screen, and with no log files being generated) is typically due
to one of two things:
1) Bad installation of the .NET
Framework. Microsoft was supposed to take care of this for us (Smile),
but that doesn’t seem to always be the case. Try repairing .NET
Framework 3.5 SP 1 from Add/Remove Programs, or uninstall and reinstall.

2) Compatibility Mode. Right-click the Logos 4 shortcut and ensure that no Compatibility settings are enabled.

I don't see a problem with that setup except for the 1gig of ram. That is the minimum amount required to run the software. It is pretty cheap to bump up to 2 or 3 gigs and in my opinion, very much worth it.

I would try to reinstall first, over the top of the current installation. If that does not work, then use system restore to roll things back to before the day you installed. Then try again.

Something got mess up along the way, because as I said this has not been a common problem.

Yes, the downloads and indexing are lengthy. But trust me when I say they are worth the wait.

Hi David, if you follow the other poster's suggestions we can help narrow down what caused the issue, please enable logging, launch L4, and then zip the logs and attach them in this thread.

I will try one more time tomorrow, but I KNOW I didn't do anything incorrectly installing the software. I waited until I received the installation DVD and still had to let my computer run all night downloading the updated files. This does not seem to be the best way for Logos to approach this project.

Sorry to hear you are having installation difficulties. It stinks when computer and software don't place nice. If for whatever reason you decide that Logos 4 is not for you at this time (whether you can't get the installation to work, or you just don't like the new design) you can get most of your new books to work in Logos 3. In my opinion it beats asking for a refund.

I can see your point, the system does take a LOT of downloading. I would have hoped that LOGOS would put some/most/all of the data on CD to minimize the problem (and take some load off of my and their connections). That said, and apart from agreeing that 1GB of RAM is a bit skimpy and a single processor is a bit slow for LOGOS, I thought I would need/want to use L3 at least some of the time. It's been a while since I've opened it at all. L4 is doing all of my work better, faster, and easier than L3 did. The learning curve has a steep starting slope but it gets easier and better as you slowly unlearn your L3 habits and blend in with L4.

I would encourage you to continue to give it a try, I have done my share of venting and over the last six weeks I have really grown to like L4. What keep me in there was the realization that I got a lot of very good L3 books for a very good price as Kevin said.

I would like to add my voice to those who are encouraging you to upgrade your RAM. 1GB is not enough to run L4 well.

BTW my father is an Aggie and I am a Mizzou Tiger so things can get interesting at times since the Big 8 and SWC became the Big 12! [:)]

David, Logos 4 will run on 1 GB of RAM. The crashes you've had are not caused by that. That said, if you have at least 3 GB of RAM you'll be a happier camper with L4.

You need to enable logging and submit the log files if you get another crash. You probably know how to do this, but if not, the directions are on the Wiki.

I have criticized Logos' decision to release the product without all its features, etc. As some have said, it feels more like a Beta than a final product. The fact is this is where we are and in its current incarnation, L4 is a powerful tool. Once you get it running and have it functioning quickly enough to satisfy you, I think you will turn to it more often than to 3.0.

I have a friend running L4 on 1 Gig. It's slow, but he loves the software and is able to use it. While increasing your RAM may improve things, I would be interested in finding out more concerning the things you are doing when your system crashes. Does it crash right when you start it up? Does it crash when you perform a certain function? What specific things do you find painful in L4?

Perceptions differ. If I only had 1 GB of RAM 75% of the applications I use on a daily basis would either not work at all, or run so poorly that they would be useless.

Seriously though, even L3 could be slow on 1GB of RAM. And L4 is working with a significantly larger amount data thank Photoshop. I'd consider the RAM requirements rather appropriate.

But then, that's coming from someone who uses even bigger RAM hungry programs than L4.

That may not be true. If you are editing snapshots in JPG that are designend only to be displayed on the web at 640x480 in 70dpi, then sure 1 GB would be fine. But a 10 MP RAW file in a 1 GB machine would be slow in Photoshop at 1 GB of Ram.

Logos is slow for me with 8 GB of RAM on a win7 64bit machine.

There is an unusual problem that is only affecting some of us. But his issue is not speed. It is getting it to even start up. The previous post about checking the .NET install would my first step to troubleshoot. Second, after that is cleared up and sure to be OK is reinstall since corruption could occur. After that, call Logos and get help or refund. Or just hold on for a few more weeks. The latest beta of 4.0a is very good and stable on my machine and fixes some of the speed issues. I have not put it through its paces yet.

To clarify an earlier comment I made, I did not think 1GB of ram was causing your crashes. I just know that is pretty low to make V4 happy.

I have an older laptop with 1GB and things are a bit slow. My other two machines that I work on run 3GB and that makes the program play nicer.

I am running the 4.0 Beta 4 and have seen significant improvements to program speed and responsiveness. Not search speed, but the program itself.

I am still disappointed in the search of Bibles, while I watch the program search the rest of my Library at amazing speeds.

True. And I'm aware of that. Most people -- I'd bet even of those who have Photoshop -- don't have cameras that produce RAW files. I personally wish I did, but I don't have the money for one. But you can compare opening up a single RAW image to have open 30 books at the same time that average 5-100MG each. That's my point. I have Logos 4 running on 2 machines: one with 4GB of RAM and my old
laptop maxed out at 1GB. I can run the program on both -- I simply try
to avoid having too many books open on the older one.

And you're right.His crashes aren't normal. I hope he tries to reinstall .NET. I'd bet that's where the problem is.
