There a whole lot of new theological journals from Galaxie on the FTP site. Anybody heard of a new collection out?
The Galaxie Software web site shows that volume 12 is available now. Updates, plus the Tyndale Bulletin.
Link to TJL12 $49.95 http://store.galaxie.com/product.asp?ProductID=100
and BibSac vols 1-90 $89.95 http://store.galaxie.com/product.asp?ProductID=101
They don't seem to be listed on the Logos website yet.
Tom
Does anyone know if TJL will be available for purchase through Logos or do I have to go to Galaxie? I would rather not bother with having a DVD shipped to me.
Unfortunately, with previous volumes it hasn't mattered where you buy it - you have to get a CD and install it. I haven't purchased vol 11 yet because shipping is a killer. This year I can combine 2 or 3 vols so perhaps I will get them... They do have some nice artwork on their covers though!
I don't know. The package is starting to look kind of weak with offerings like Tyndale Bulletin (1972-2005). I checked it out on-line (where you can get all this for free), but I am not sure it adds any value to the $50 price tag.
Anyone have any working knowledge of this journal?
Joe,
I'm not sure what you mean by weak, the authors read like a who's who in Theology. Some of the authors who contributed are J I Packer, John Goldingay, Max Turner, Kevin Vanhoozer, Richard Bauckham, B K Beale, Francis Watson, Philip Towner, Stanley Porter, I Howard Marshall, D A Carson, and R T France.
Most of these men have written major commentaries for the NICNT, Pillar, NIGTC, WBC, or the ICC.

The Tyndale Bulletin is excellent. It comes from the best (and I mean that) biblical studies library in the world. So good I subscribe to the print edition. It's solidly evangelical, yet remains scholarly. One of the best British journals for biblical studies. Particularly good on NT background studies/Graeco-Roman culture (regular contributors include Andrew D. Clarke and Bruce Winter), and also on text-critical issues.

Make sure you're looking at this page, as the navigation is a bit confusing and there are other places on the website where you get less full tables of contents: http://www.tyndalehouse.com/TynBul/Library/00_TyndaleBulletin_ByDate.htm
This is part of the email that Galaxie Software sent with the release of TJL 12:
IMPORTANT INFO: Please read!In the past few months, I've personally gone through over 400 of the volumes from previous Theological Journal CDs... fixing the typos that you reported ... rebuilding in the new Logos xml format... removing my 1/2 inch margins so that they fill the screen on the iphone...One nice thing about the new format is that titles and headings are now searchable. So, in addition to being able to search for "author:wallace" you can search for "heading:keyword".... that should help you narrow your searches to articles or sections dealing specifically with your topic. If you are using Logos 4, it should automatically download these updated books to your library. If you are using Libronix 3, you can download them from ftp://ftp.logos.com/LbxBooks/look for the gs_journalabbrev.lbxlls files with dates of 12/xx/2009if you are using IE - you can click the page icon at the top right of the browser and choose "open ftp site in windows explorer", then you can select multiple files and download them. Tip: click the modified column twice and the updated gs_ files will be at the top of the list.Note: If you don't download the updated files, the newest volumes of the journals on TJL 12 will be listed at the beginning of that particular journal in the "my library" in libronix/logos engine. That is because of the way the new logos book builder creates the sort title. For example, you would see:Bibliotheca Sacra Volume 165Bibliotheca Sacra Volume 91Bibliotheca Sacra Volume 92etc.
That's excellent news. I'm not seeing those updated resources yet, though.
I received the email as well. It looks like it is still a L3 product and to get the license into L4 we will have to install in L3, then sync and then allow L4 to transfer the books. I guess some of those who have removed L3 will be reinstalling it.
This does not surprise me as this transition must be even harder on Logos' publishing partners than it has for us. All of Nelson's new packages are essentially obsolete the month they shipped. I am sure they are not happy about that.
Answering my own question, I suspect Logos has published the L3 version of these files, but not yet the L4 version. I would imagine that if I manually download the L3 version, then I'll only have to re-download the L4 versions in a few hours or days time.
Bobby and Mark, thanks for your input. I suppose "weak" may not be the best word, but I have never heard of this journal before, so it seemed more obscure compared to some of the others.
Thanks for your input.
If it's any consolation the only journal my seminary carries from the Logos TLJ collection is WTJ. Here in the UK it's very rare for anyone to carry even BibSac, Trinity or JETS. But most evangelical seminaries will carry Tyndale.
FYI I just got a confirmation email from Hampton that the only way to purchase TJL12 right now is via the L3 CD. He said that eventually Logos will set things up for download for Logos 4 users, but he does not know when that will be.

(sigh) Thanks! Means I have to get the CD sent over. [:(]

Okay, I cannot get the "heading:xxxxxx" search to work for TJL v1-10. I rebuilt the index and still no joy. The journals are all there (have been since I installed them a week ago.) Is this feature only for the v12 right now, or am I experiencing a problem.
I was under the impression that the new TJ were not yet on the Logos server for download, so I think they are only on the DVD for now.
Thanks, Joe. It's probably my own misunderstanding here. I got the old L3 version of the TJL last week with my upgrade to L4. When I loaded it to L3 and sync'd the licenses, L4 downloaded them and they appeared in my L3 and L4. I was assuming I had the new L4 version of the journals in L4. Apparently, L4 is still reading the L3 version. I will patiently await the automatic updates for now.
Thanks again.
The files are on the FTP site, but Logos doesn't have the licencing yet. (under the 14th I think)
Scott,
Download the new L3 files from the Logos FTP site into your L3 resource directory. The next time you start L4 it will detect the new L3 files in the L3 directory, and "download" them from that directory into your L4 resource directory. Once you reindex you will be able to do the heading searches. Here is the text of Hampton's email:

I followed the steps above and unfortunately it didn't work.
I reinstalled Logos 3 and downloaded the updated journals from the Logos ftp site. The new journals appear in Logos 3, but Logos 4 did not "download" them. The old versions still appear in the Logos4 resource folder. I did all of this about 5 hours ago. I thought by now I would have the updated journals available.
I'm anxious to have the topic (heading) search back. Maybe I did something wrong. Any help would be appreciated.
Bill
Logos only updates once per day. Type "update now" in the command bar to force an update. If that doesn't work (wait for confirmation in the bottom right of your screen - it could take 30seconds to 1 minute), try "update resources". This takes much longer - up to 15 minutes - and will also confirm whether or not updates have been found.
Thanks Mark.
I tried "update now" and "update resources" a few hours ago. Both returned "no updates available".
I'll wait and try again later today.
Not showing up for me either.
William,
My guess is that your problem is that you "reinstalled L3" perhaps L4 does not know to look in the L3 resource folder. I just got vol. 12 and all the new books were install in L3 and then when I started L4 up it took them out of the L3 directory.
Try the "Scan" command pointing to your L3 resource directory. Remember once you issue this command you have to close down L4 and restart it for it to "scan" the directory.
Thanks Keith. I think the "scan" command worked. It's reindexing now.
Logos4 did "download" the new resources from the Logos 3 directory. However the heading search still isn't working right. I'll start a new topic.
The "scan" command isn't very well documented in the wiki. All it says is: "Scan {Resource Path} finds unlocked books in a folder or on a disk." Yes, but then what does it do with them? And I thought "unlocked books" was old L3 lingo not used anymore in L4. Could someone who can explain the scan command better update that section of the Logos 4 Commands wiki page? Anybody can edit the page. Just click "Edit" in the upper right corner of the page, make the textual changes in the editable panel at the top, click Preview if you want to be sure it came out right, and Save once you're done.
Just make a Journals collection. Then do a basic seach, select your Journal collection to be search, type "heading:xxxx", and it should work. At least it does for me.
And I thought "unlocked books" was old L3 lingo not used anymore in L4
Until Logos gets around to updating all the old L3 and L2 books it still uses those files. Look in your resource directory and you will see them there.
I think this is a little different situation.
For example I rarely search on only recent journal issues and I rarely search on only particular issues. When I do a journal search, I search on all of the journals. With the current situation, if I do a heading search all of the Ashland journals are excluded from the results since they have not been tagged with a heading search field.
It's very important, in my opinion, for all of the journals to be tagged, not just the recent issues.
It occurred to me that you my not have gone the the L3 FTP site and downloaded the new updated L3 files for the older journals. Although these are not in L4 format yet, they do have the Heading tag and many typo corrections and the removal of the 1/2 margin. For what ever reason Logos has not place the new files in the L4 FTP directory so L4 will not automatically download these yet. What you have to do is download the L3 versions and then scan the L3 resource directory and L4 will place them in the L4 resources directory.
BTW I just confirmed that the updated files Ashland Journals have not place in the Logos FTP. In Hampton's email it certainly suggested that he had updated all those files. I would suggest to keep looking at the FTP site for these to show up if the Ashland Journal is important to you. Until then, enjoy the journals that have been updated.
The updated Ashland Journals are not at Galaxie's FTP site, either:
ftp://ftp.bible.org/galaxie/libronix/updated_journals_lbx3/
I just compared both the Logos and Galaxie ftp directories and I have the most current versions of all of the journals, in fact more current than the Logos ftp site.
Fyi. Based on my count, 9 of the journals have not been updated to a December 2009 date.
I'll send an email to Hampton to figure this all out.
Keith has just posted to say the updated Ashland files are now on Galaxie's FTP site.
I have both L3 and L4 and have had TJ11 installed under L3. I purchased TJ12 and installed it to L3 but I can't see it under L4. I see some people mentioning re-indexing as though it were something I could do manually. Is this true? What do I have to do to access this under L4?
By the way, you can get the newest edition of the journal library direct from Logos now: http://www.logos.com/products/details/5908
David,
In Logos 3, type in scan foldername (where foldername is the folder where your Logos3 resources are found - usually c:\program files\Libronix DLS\Resources). Then close L4 and re-open it. It should start adding and indexing your TLJ files.
Mark
I have downloaded all the updated journal files from Galaxie's site (except for those in TJL 12 which I don't yet have) - including the Ashland Journals dated 24/12/09 and the Reformation & Revival Journals dated 26/12/09.
I note that the following journals are still not tagged with the 'heading' field:
Ashland; Reformation & Revival; Faith & Mission (all in the updated journals FTP site)
Furthermore, there do not seem to be updates for the following journals (and hence no 'heading' tags) which are all dated 2006 or 2007 on my installation
Bible & Spade; Conservative Theological Journal; Global Journal; Grace Journal; Grace Theological Journal
Can anyone confirm this?
Mark,
Ashland has been updated and apparently Reformation & Revival (I haven't downloaded it yet). I sent an email to Hampton at Galaxie and he is updating the journals one at a time. Very time consuming, I assume. So yes, many of the journals have not been updated yet. But he is working on it.
You have to scan the folder that contains your Logos3 journals from within Logos4 in order for Logos4 to recongnize and transfer the new journals into the Logos4 resource directory.
I had problems with my install of TJL 12. See this thread to see what I did to fix it..
http://community.logos.com/forums/t/8076.aspx
I know both Ashland and R&R have been updated and I have them in Logos 4 (all transferred and indexed in the correct manner along with all the other journals in the TJL collection). My point is that the updates for these two journals at this time only appear to be the typographical corrections reported to Galaxie and do NOT include tagging of the headings (which HAS been done on many of the other journals in the collection, but not all at this time). Earlier posts in this thread described not being able to search using the heading: syntax on some journals and this is still not possible on the updated Ashland and R&R resources (i.e. those with update dates of 24/12/09 and 26/12/09 respectively). I understand that the tagging is a time-consuming process (as is correcting scanning errors) and I am not being critical that these resources are not yet tagged as we all want them to be - just making it clear to all that the latest updates for Ashland and R&R still do not have headings tagged [:)]
When I refer to updating, I'm referring to the heading tagging, not just the correction of typos. Ashland has been updated with heading tagging. I just tested it and it worked fine. If you click on the information icon for Ashland, you will see "heading" as a search term.
I'm doing a re-indexing now, which should result in R&R with heading tagging.
I think there are about 7 other journals that do not have the heading tagging.
My re-indexing is complete and R&R now has the heading tag. Just tested it, and it also works.
Bill,
What does your information icon show in terms of the file name and date? This is mine and it does not show the heading being searchable but as far as I can tell I have the latest file
I have the same file date. However "heading" is included as a search field in mine. (I don't know how to copy it into the post.) It sounds like you need to do a re-index.
If you do a heading search on your Ashland journals, do you receive a message that says something like "merge index now"?
Hi Bill
Thanks for checking your information and noting that we have the same filename and date.
No I don't get a message about 'merge index now' when I try a search but I have bitten the bullet and initiated a 'rebuild index' command to see if this makes a difference. From your experience it seems that this may be what is required (despite the fact that after I downloaded the new files it went through the indexing process for those new files!). The re-index will take around 12 hours on my machine (given past indexing times - unless 4.0a is a lot faster though the blue icon currently tells me it has 22 hours to go!) so will post after it has completed with the result of the re-index and whether the elusive heading tag then appears.
Thanks for your help in trying to track this problem down [:)]
Hope the index rebuild works. Actually I'm having a similar issue...
Today I received my new journals on CD (volumes 10, 11, & 12) and the indexer keeps crashing. I sent the log files to Logos tech. But I also decided to rebuild my index.
Hope it works for both of us. [:)]
Just to add .02 from another user, I also just have Volume/Page as an index on TJL 37 per the image above, yet I can do a search with Heading:xxx and it works fine. I have also rebuilt my index and the Heading Index was not noted, but it seems to work no?
Bill, I Have had index crashes in the past . If you feel safe in doing so, "Cut" your whole LibraryIndex folder and paste it on your desktop so you have it in case of problem, then Add a new folder same place, LibraryIndex (so in fact you have made your index folder an empty one), then run Logos4. It will do a fresh index and anything causing crashes will be gone.
