Nit-picky but significant issue in Bible Facts

Here are the glosses given for Priscilla and Aquila in Bible Facts:

"Aquila - who, together with his wife Prisca, were supporters of Paul's work in the early church."

"Priscilla - Aquila's wife."

I noticed a few issues with this. First, the form chosen for Priscilla/Prisca's name isn't consistent. I don't really care about that. The gloss for Aquila is also grammatically off – the verb should should be singular, "was a supporter of," to match the subject – but I don't care much about that either.

Here's what bothers me. In the Bible, Priscilla is an equal partner in the work they're doing. In fact, except at the initial meeting in Acts 18:2 where they hadn't even become believers yet, Priscilla is always listed first! She deserves an entry that doesn't imply she was just along for the ride. I'd really like to see this changed to "who, together with her husband Aquila, was a supporter of Paul's work in the early church."

Mitchell is correct. Priscilla / Prisca does merit equal credit.

That would be more true to the Biblical text, for the reasons Mitchell states, and any evangelical should support being true to the Biblical text.

And I will tell you another picky but important issue that bothers me even more than this. And in my mind it is somewhat related to the same problem we see in the Priscilla issue. I think it results from the same bias.

This one is actually in many English translations of the Bible, including my beloved NIV 1984. There is a paragraph break mid-sentence in Ephesians 5:21-22. (Vs. 21) "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ" (New paragraph Vs. 22) "Wives submit to your husbands as to the Lord." The verb "submit" is not even in verse 22, it is drawn from verse 21. Verse 22 only says, "wives to husbands as to the Lord." That is because verses 21-22 are one sentence. "Submit to one another as unto the Lord, wives to husbands as to the Lord." (Check you Logos Greek text or interlinear. I say that to keep this relevant to Logos software.)

Yet there is a paragraph break and a new heading in the NIV 1984 before verse 22 that says "Wives and Husbands", both splitting this sentence. Any honest translation would acknowledge that verses 21-22 (one sentence) belong in the same paragraph and deal with the same subject. You have to add an extra verb that is not in the text to split them.

That has always bothered me. I hate it when we are not true to the text.

Hi Michael,

I find it interesting that you like translations that are true to the text, but prefer the NIV 84. I use both the ESV and the NIV 2011 mainly, but the sort of mediating equivalence philosophy that the NIV follows will always take it further away 'from the text' (literally). Or did I misread you?

Regarding the verse itself, I would say that the 5:22 translation is not an example of bias, as it is supplying a word that makes it easier to understand in the receptor language (international English). If anything, biases in translations are found in section headings [:)]

Certainly, an excellent point. And I certainly didn't intend to imply that Logos should attempt to fix it. It just came into my mind when reading this thread, and I probably shouldn't have mentioned it. I appreciate you pointing out the Lexham Bible does address the issue.
