I'm rather stunned that McGrath is the one who ended up in the Division final against Carson. I'd never heard of him until this contest, and looking at his available titles doesn't leave me impressed. It's a crime that Waltke got beat in the first round; he was the only one in his half of the bracket who had a decent shot at taking out Carson.

It says "Get a free book from Vyrso when you sign up for Logos March Madness updates!" so I thought well ok I'll see what they're offering. But when I tried to sign up it came up with this "You were not subscribed to any lists. Sorry, you have been banned from the mailing list 'marchmadness'." I hate to be banned from anything! BTW, I unchecked "Also send me news about special offers!"

Can someone tell me what the free Vyrso book is? Is it worth my time fighting with their website to subscribe?

Sorry but I had to laugh, some of the marketing practices round here beggar belief. Logos should make "How to win friends and influence people" mandatory reading for all staff.

Why not just use a different email address? I always use a new address for things like this (not just with Logos) so I can see what other lists I magically get added to.

Although Logos doesn't have his best works, McGrath is a first-class Church Historian and is considered one of the most important writers on the interface between science and Christianity (he has three doctorates, all from Oxford: one in molecular biophysics, one in historical theology, and one in science/religion). He has just been appointed as Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at Oxford University.

I love science...great stuff. Obviously, I love religion, too. I'm not too keen on the idea of trying to blend or meld them or even get them to kiss and make friends. I think there is a high probability that YHWH jinked the system to make things appear one way from a material view, when the reality is something else.Why would He do that? Same reason He made us out of stuff that is incapable of serving him perfectly. He literally has bucking the natural system as one of His chief goals. I therefore think that using natural "evidence" of a material nature to prove anything Biblical misses the point. Archaeology is interesting, but I will never base my confidence in YHWH in anything dug from the ground. Our belief is Book based, and the evidence is primarily interior.

It's kind of hard to troll or spam a mailing list... I use a VPN so perhaps someone used the IP address I was assigned that day to click too many times on Bonhoeffer or Lloyd-Jones. ;-) It wasn't me! We'll see if Logos ever responds again with an idea of why it happened.

You need to start somewhere, don't you? Your position on science and religion reminds me of a position I heard long ago that God made things appear to be one way and told us it was something else to see whether we would believe him (the bible) or believe science. Actually, it isn't a matter of believing the bible or science but a matter of believing SOMEONE'S INTERPRETATION OF THE BIBLE or science.

Hmmm, David. I think you might have got me. I usually write so the interpretation can self-reflect prism-wise, in a manner that prohibits any conclusion.

But you might have outdone me.

Actually I'm pretty opposite you (though consonent at least with the contents of the NT; not the subsequent layers). In my mind, if one accounts for a creator (which was a major issue in the 1st century and thence Marcion), then 'science' is theology ... studying God. Where the post-WWII scientists left the track, was not distinguishing theory (usually far-past or far-future) from what they can actually see.

Now here's where you'll kill me. Given a varience between the writings and what I can see (the creation), I'll go with what I can see (both being from God) One has battled its way through many generations, language alterations, and copyists; the other is pretty pristine. And if the world turns out to indeed be round (I've only traveled around it half-way, both ways), that'd be a good thing.

In most contexts, that's an eye-winking knee-slapper.OBVIOUSLY, oral testimony is always trumped by visual proof, right? Well, sure, in pretty much all contexts, yes.

Except one...the context dealing with the One who refuses to become a visual representation. In dealing with that One, not only is visual evidence less compelling, it is even demoted. Thomas needed not just visual, but tactile verification of the Word. But receiving the Word through words...that is the response YHWH is looking for. He is a logical God, who certainly has used "wonders" to grab attention in the past, but most of those anecdotes are their own testimony that "wonders" don't change hearts. Obedience comes from a logical sense of "situational awareness". Not only does scripture make sense, having a high level of internal validity, but it is backed up with the perpetual trump card of prophecy (we've talked about the astronomical probabilities associated with prophecy before).

Bart Ehrman has made a lot of hay out of internal "in-validities" as he sees them. Scientists produce reams of info debunking Biblical notions. And of course, there's dinosaurs...I wonder how many Russell Crowe has on his floaty thing? My point is, YHWH has expressed pretty clearly that He feels He has demonstrated both His existence and His worthiness for worship beyond the point of dismissal. While there was a time when I felt otherwise, I have come to a place where I think it is not just possible but probable that He has created a world with physically tangible, measurable, describable, residual history...that is entirely fictional. Why?
