Apparently MS is giving away the full version of OneNote for both Mac and Windows.

Looks like the free version is stripped down. The premium version allows local storage of notebooks, but the free one requires cloud storage (and therefore internet access).
Nope, it's the whole shebang:
Microsoft's OneNote goes completely free, launches for Macs
No it is not, at least if local storage of notebooks is what you think of as part of the shebang. Check the link you gave and look for the section on that page "Get premium OneNote Features and more with Office 365".
I'm not dissing the offer, but like Todd, clarifying what one can get for free.
Technically, premium features, like SharePoint support and Outlook integration still require Office purchase, but the full desktop version of OneNote 2013, (including local storage of notebooks) is now free.
I guess it isn't the whole shebang, but...
MS Quote:
"For Office 365 and Office 2013 customers, we have premium features like SharePoint support, version history, Outlook integration and so on, but all the core OneNote application capabilities are available in the free version."
OneNote now on Mac, free everywhere, and service powered
I love OneNote - it is the one program that I miss from my pre-Mac life. There are a few features missing on the Mac version besides previously mentioned no local storage, which to me is not a big deal because I can still work in OneNote when I'm offline, once connected OneNote syncs to the cloud. However, there are some missing parts from the Windows/Office version, three of the missing parts that affect my workflow are:
Hopefully the above functionality will soon be added by Microsoft. Even with the missing functionality, I am still using OneNote because in my opinion it still hands down beats any other note taking software available on the Mac.
Did notice one little bug though. Have a program running a script, building several notebooks on this computer (never had MS Office on this computer), and it keeps balking at each step "This version of OneNote only allows notebook creation in onedrive". All this while the program is creating local files.
Must be a bit of leftover code from the "online only" version.
OK, standing confused. All of a sudden it will no longer let me create local notebooks.
Something is off here...
Think I'm giving up on it for now, too many bugs. One minute it is working fine with local notebooks, the next minute it's complaining that it doesn't do that. Sometimes notebooks open with no visible text displayed (have to restart the program).
Seems like it needs a little more polishing...
What would you use this program for? I watched the video for this, and I'd sooner be enticed to buy a can of paint just so I could watch it dry.
It's a shame the full version is crippled. I didn't realize that. I think MS should have taken a different approach, maybe giving a small OneDrive acct and requiring purchase for more space or something. The full version does include printing & exporting in various formats.
As far as saving to the local computer, I like that as a backup option, but by putting it in OneDrive, you can include links to your OneNote notes in Logos and vice versa and have full back and forth access your notes across all platforms, including mobile. You could also share your Logos note with links along with your OneNote file and others could have the same access. Cross-linking is very doable, but could be easier.
I personally feel OneNote is a much much more mature editor than EverNote though they do much the same thing, they provide a cross platform, mobile means of taking notes in various formats and organizing those notes. With the Tags in OneNote you can effectively replicate most of the features of Sermon PBs, just tag scriptures refs, keywords, etc. and use Find Tags to generate an index. You can also insert image files, scanned images, excel sheets, tables. Make custom drawings, voice & video recordings, handwriting recognition, etc.
Haven't noticed any real bugs or crashes in the full version. That and the free version limitations upset me a bit though. I've been thinking this would be a nearly ideal solution for Logos/Notes though I'm still testing that setup and figuring things out. The full version, I guess, still has potential for those buying office or the standalone version.

Good review.
