Seems Slower on My Computer

When L5 came out, it was a bit faster than L4, but for the past 6 months, it has been geeting progressively worse on my machine with every update. Now it has become unstable, indexing has slowed to a snails pace, and the handouts module has grown increasingly corrupt.

I am very disappointed. It has become a quite a behemoth. Does anyone else have the same impression?

I don't.

I don't use handouts so can't reflect on those. Overall I have not noticed any degradation in speed or stability.

Are you regularly defragmenting your hard drive?

Yes I do. Do you think some of Logos' files may becoming corrupted? Or perhaps my computer is getting old. It's 3-year-old laptop.

By the way, I hope they will fix my post count. It's wrong, since I have been posting here for years.

When did you last reboot your computer? Sometimes that helps to speed things up.

The handouts module is the ugly stepchild that is not being worked on anymore. If other changes in the program break it or slow it down, that's too bad. It won't likely get fixed. I believe they might be planning one day in the distant future to completely rewrite that module. But the way it stands now, it did not meet user expectations, or Bob Pritchett's expectations, so it's deprecated. I would create my handouts in Word for now if I were you.

By the way, I hope they will fix my post count. It's wrong, since I have been posting here for years.

This happens whenever someone changes their email address.

Logos will not notice and fix it without being asked. You'll have to email forums@logos.com to request that your post count be reset. Give them the old email address that you changed from and the new one you changed to, and they'll be able to add the post numbers together for you.

Actually, the devs have done a terrific job of rewriting and optimizing portions of Logos to get a lot of speed improvements in many places. There are still some areas that can definitely use improvement, but it is improving in many ways.

You might want to try a good disk derangementer like Defraggler to see if you can eek out a little speed gain.

I rebooted last night. I don't want to blame the problem on Logos. But it seems to be the only program running this way. If I only had the dough for a shiny new Mac. [:(]

As far as I can tell, I've done most of the conventional troubleshooting. If no-one else has experienced the same lag as me, there must be something I am doing wrong? I don't want to have to do a complete reinstall. I hope that isn't necessary.

Rosie, that explains the handouts function. It gave me a lot of headaches as I was trying to do my lesson plan. I hope they consider reworking it. It's still useful for teachers. However, maybe you're right about giving up and using Word.

FYI, here is where Bob said the feature is deprecated:

Handouts was an experimental feature that didn't live up to our expectations (of functionality or user acceptance). It's had to port to the Mac, and hard to expand from its existing platform. We'll likely be deprecating it until we can find a new design and path to implementation.

So they've been talking about doing this handouts rewrite for almost 4 years now, and there has been no sign of it. I'm guessing it's very low priority for them.

How are you holding your mouth when using Logos? Just a little joke. Sometimes when something doesn't work I say I wasn't holding my mouth right.

Generally my mouth is wide open in awe of God and what He can do with a ragtag group of coders in a corner of Warshington State.

When the little wheel keeps on a turning for 5 minutes and nothing happens and I am going to be late for class because it is not printing, it just makes me nervous, that's all. It's probably my own fault.

You would know if that was the case as the program would crash, so I don't know what you mean when you say "the handouts module has grown increasingly corrupt". Have you got the latest version Logos 5.2 SR-6 (or the 5.2a RC2)?

3 years isn't old but slow indexing can be caused by a hard drive that is getting full (less than 20% free space) and/or very fragmented.
