Doh! Are page numbers gone?

I read this post last night:

and was delighted to realize that not only could I cut and paste, but page numbers were on display for certain books, such as commentaries. I tried it and observed the page numbers in alpha 7.

This morning alpha 8 downloads, but now there don't seem to be any page numbers (to clarify, when right clicking on a paragraph in my NAC commentary, there is not a reference: page 407 tab any longer). Are they gone? Is there a new way to see them? Or maybe just maybe is alpha 8 gonna re-index everything, and the page numbers will re-appear when indexing is done?

The page #s are still there. If you copy and paste into Word for Mac you will see the footnotes show the page #. It looks like A8 is using the verse reference as the default display (which is preferable for moving to different passages), but once we get some options built it, we should be able to switch to page numbers when we want to.

i did not do anything special. i can only assume my default settings carried over from my L4win Beta testing days. the good news is the functionality is there once the setting panel is built for us.

Now, will it ever work with Pages????

Just type it in and it will go where you want depending on what you typed.

Well, you are correct. Regrettably, it's not so useful. I don't know the page number a priori. When I need a footnote, I don't want to start guessing what page I'm on. Hopefully they will add button or such to toggle back and forth. Thanks for your help, Donovan.

Agreed. Unfortunately, if I need to manually look up a page, I am having to go to L4 Windows. I would put the ability to display page numbers high up on my Christmas wish list with Team Logos. Maybe they will put it in my Christmas stocking this year with Alpha 9?!? (hint, hint)

The page number does carry over into footnotes so once that user control is enabled your footnotes will have the page number even if you don't see it in the box. My guess is you are writing a paper and that is not much help though right now huh? Sorry for that.

Hopefully they will add button or such to toggle back and forth.

Donovan, you are also using the Windows version, right? Is there a user control for that?

Short answer:

Page numbers have been intentionally removed from the context menu in both Mac and Windows. Page numbers will again be visible on the Mac when Visual Filter support is added.

Long answer:

Prior to Mac Alpha 8, the page number showed up in the context menu on both Windows and the Mac. On the Mac, this was the only place page numbers showed up. On Windows, however, having the page number in the context menu was redundant, so they took it out, because for resources with page numbers, there is a better mechanism for showing them. Eventually, when visual filters are implemented on the Mac, you will again be able to show page numbers by turning on the page number visual filter.

This is one of the quirks of the alpha process and having so much underlying code shared. Mac Alpha users are actually running not only the latest version of the Mac code but also the latest version of the code that is shared between the Mac and Windows apps. In fact, there have been a couple instances where the Mac Alpha was released with features (e.g. incremental indexing) that hadn't yet been released to Windows users following the Windows beta channel.

The absolute coolest part about this is that all the work beta testers are doing on the Windows side is helping us and all the work we do over here is helping them. It is a great process to have all hands working toward the same goal on both windows and mac platforms!!! [H]
