Monitor Suggestions for Logos

I am looking into purchasing a new monitor to use with my MacBook Pro to more efficiently use Logos for my sermon prep. I am really overwhelmed with all of the choices, and I am looking for any kind of suggestions or advice that you could provide.

I have a budget of approximately $300-350.

I would prefer a large display. However, I am wondering if it would be better to get something with a higher resolution in the 23-24 inch range or if it would be better to get a standard, Full HD, 27" monitor.

Anyone have any advice, suggestions, or other ideas I need to consider?

For standard monitors, prices go up dramatically above 23/24". 23" monitors for example can be had in the low 100 range, e.g. $129...27" are often around $200+. I'm not sure it's worth the price jump to get the slightly larger screen. Not sure about pricing or options for Apple-branded monitors, but it didn't sound like you were looking there exclusively.

If you get a Dell, HP, etc brand monitor, you may need an adapter cable to go from DVI or HDMI to whatever your Macbook Pro needs.

The next wave of displays is ultra HD/4K resolution. Honestly, I don't think anyone needs to buy into that yet. Mostly because of cost, but also because it will require better video cards to drive those resolutions smoothly, particularly for anything graphics intensive. Computer gaming would be one example, but Logos as well to a lesser extent. And the other reason is that you don't need as many pixels when you're sitting away from a screen. Case in point - a tablet needs much higher resolution/pixel density, because you use it close to your face. A screen that is several feet away doesn't need as many pixels to look good.

I have a 23" HP branded monitor that is 1920x1080 that I use at home, and then two Dell branded monitors that are both 23" and 1920x1080 resolution at work. They work great for Logos. In the past I've had great success with screens from Samsung as well. I would tend to avoid cheaper brands like Dynex (Best Buy in-house brand) and the like because they tend to be poorer quality and not last as long.

Picture clarity is important. Some screens have better whites (background) and crisper blacks than others. Comparing several screens in person at a store might help you decide. Be careful that sometimes the sales staff will fiddle with brightness/contrast to make the more expensive displays look better.

If you are OK with buying online, you may find better pricing for various monitors at Amazon, Newegg, or similar. Or, buy from Best Buy, but buy online with instore pickup, so that you can get cashback through Discover, Chase, or other cashback sites.

I would go for wider as the more important dimension. That way you can have two full-sized apps up side-by-side. Logos and a web browser, say. Or have your Logos window tiled to have two full-sized panels with tools/resources in them. I would say the width is more important than the resolution. The resolution capabilities of all of these monitors are more than sufficient for most needs, including Logos. Only if you'd be doing high intensity gaming or video editing or some such might you need higher.

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 245T, which is 24" on the diagonal, giving a screen real estate of about 12.5" H x 20.5" W. It's already a few years old, but I still find it more than adequate. You can definitely find some good quality wide flat-screen monitors in that price range you're looking for. Go with a well-known and well-respected brand for reliability. E.g., NEC, Samsung, Dell, ASUS, ViewSonic.

I may be wrong but I think most if not all will be widescreen now. Windows side by side is great. Better yet get two monitors.

I would go for a 1920x1080 resolution. Which probably means 22" minimum. Smaller monitors often have 1366x768 or 1440x900 and you just cant fit as much on the screen especially vertically.

I have two Asus PB278Q monitors. They are a bit more than the price range you mention but these monitors are absolutely beautiful. You get what you pay for.

I would shop at newegg.com

It so happens they have a monitor sale going on now.

Besides size and resolution, an IPS screen (broad-viewing angle) is something to look out for.
