Looking for the Temple in Exodus

I appreciate all the suggestions regarding my post Looking for the Temple. I purchased a good number both from Logos and Kindle. Some pretty expensive, others not so.

Now I need your help finding some books on Exodus that talk about Temple theology. I guess the temple wasn't in place yet, but maybe a Tabernacle Theology then.

Milkman. Those snow piles in your wife's picture are freezing your brain. There's got to be a billion books on the Temple (take your pick which one) and Exodus. Stephen dreamed one in his sleep (for which Kirsopp Lake was not impressed, just reading yesterday).

Now the question (again ... hope you're not being offended) is which 'view'?

(One of the reasons I don't agree with the area you're exploring, is that jews surrounding the 1st century really went crazy with exactly what the Temple was. To illustrate, one Sunday our pastor was teaching 'Jesus in the Temple' and I asked him whether he thought YHWH's 'shekinah' (or 'memra') was in the Holy of Holies while Jesus was outside in Solomon's Court (he's an expert on the temple; leads tours there each year.)

I'm never offended by my innocent questions, just my dumb and dumber ones.

I guess I'm exploring temple theology. I hadn't really studied it hard before, don't remember any prof teaching it in seminary, maybe they did, but I could have been snoozing through that one.

You ask, which 'view' I'm exploring? Is there more than one view on temple theology? I guess my question to you, shows how little I know about the topic and hence my desire to find out more.

I'd love to understand why you don't agree with the area I'm exploring. Not to theologically dialogue around it, but so I can find out as much as possible about God's Word. I only wish I had ten million in the bank, all the books in the world, could stay up 24/7 have enough time to date my wife, play a couple rounds of golf a week, ok maybe three rounds, walk my/our dog and work out, but seeing the 10 million thing isn't going to happen, I'm going to have resign to one round a week.

So I'm all ears to any suggestions or comments. Never a dumb question.

OK Milkman, I'll try to stay away from theology, but pointing out there's maybe 3 or 4 major 'rivers' of thinking regarding the Temple:

1. Think about why a YHWH-blessed series of captives chose not to return to the land of promise (Assyrian; maybe 3-4 generations lapsed, Babylonian, 1 generation and primarily priests/leaders choosing not to return). Of course 2 documented groups did return, but the 2nd reluctantly, and a passle left in Babylon centuries later. That produces river #1.

2. A second one is the one you're familiar with. YHWH thought David had too much blood, Solomon got the tasking, Israel got a whipping. Another temple. And then another. And then a new age/messiah replaced the Temple (Christianity). That'd be the 2nd river.

3. Another river shows up in the groups surrounding the 1st century and earlier, and that is the impact of Hellenization and politicizing of religion. That river is extremely hard to track (heavily dependent on Josephus, and the apocrypha/pseudegrapha/Qumran). Thiis one 'seems' to be closely associated with the tabernacle in Exodus (thus my mention of Stephen and Kirsopp Lake above). The 'rub' here is Stephen/tabernacle vs Paul/Abraham.

4. The final river seems to show up in the wall that prohibited gentiles going any further. And that 'river' is whether the Herodian construction was ever regarded as 'the Temple'. This river seems to be being explored more and more relative to recent archaeology. It's interesting the present day rabbis had to re-define the cubit to accomodate this river.

The only reason I kind of 'draw the line' on Genesis/Ezekiel/Revelations is that there's really no 'wall' that prohibits moving on to Enoch and the book of Jude, thense 2nd Peter and 'chariots' in Sedona. Kind of like come November, the hunters are in charge, and it's just a question of whether you need a silencer on your rifle or not.

Milkman, actually I'm not worried about forum guidelines (it's not my forum!). But these issues do (and should) offend various groups, and so it's good to tread lightly.

I'll re-state each river above in a more simple (but likely offending) way, and you'll see the problem. Smile.

1. The 'Temple' was mainly a chapel built by 'Solomon' next to a small 'palace' (plus many more shrines up on Mount of Olives). It became closely linked to which family had power in the southern hill-country. Later, Persia managed non-Persians by co-opting their priests for management and tax collection. A jewish group in Babylon 'signed up', seeing it as a means of re-establishing their own power in the homeland in southern Palestine.

2. Pretty straight-forward.

3. This one you really should read something like the 'Shadow' that someone recommended in your previous thread. It's a good book and worth keeping. Essentially the problem is how to track a re-built, but small, poorly built temple after the return, and replace it with a fairly major money'd operation centuries later (pre-Herod) as descibed by Aristeas. Generally 'follow the money' is the guiding principle, versus religious purists (dirty money; unclean, etc) >> Jesus.

4. This last one primarily shows up in the recent archaeology books for Jerusalem, and that is the coincident placement of the 'gentile' wall in the approximate bounds calculated for the original Solomon temple. That part's easy to understand (if indeed true). The problem arises with exactly what was the 'Herodian' extension used for (presumably located where Jesus whipped the Temple businessmen). That tracks to the jewish leaders mentioned in the NT, etc. And did Jesus have 'credentials' to go past the wall (father?), since there's little (actually no) talk of sacrifices in Jerusalem by Jesus or his group.

Now each of these is not straight-forward; one could slice and dice many different ways and validly so. Just an over-simplification for illustrative purposes.
