Oh. No you didn't use the blink tag.... really?

I just linked to a book page from another post. And I couldn't read anything about it because at the top "be the first to rate this book" is blinking. Over and over and over and over.

PLEASE

Tell me you didn't just jump back to HTML 1.0 and use the <Blink> Tag. Please.

OK, I know it's probably java, but for crying out loud, I'm too tired and It's too late at night for me to be subjected to blink tags.

Please just delete them. All of them. They are like backmasking - never really documented when created, and totally unnecessary to the propagation of evil.

Kill the blink tag. My eyes will thank you.

{The previous rant is probably brought on by lack of sleep. And blink tags. But mostly blink tags.}

I tore into the code. There's no blink tag. Why was is it still blinking? I wish I had a screen recorder installed.

My only hint is that Google Chrome's "loading animation circle thingy" on the tab is still cycling. Something is stuck in a download loop, and I think that is making the aforementioned phrase blink.

Whatever you do, don't blink. Don't even blink.

Actually it is still blinking, it seems that all of the Logos resource pages are doing this for some reason (and yes they are the only ones):

My guess is that they're loading in the ratings after the page loads via ajax. For whatever reason, the code is probably detecting a failure to load even on success for you (e.g. timeout -- the content is getting back, but after the ajax request thinks it should have), so it's reloading over and over. That would simulate a blink on your page.

It is using ajax, here's the returned object for that element. I don't know why your browser is requesting the stars rating repeatedly...I'm not keen on tracing through the code to see what happens in nrWrapper()

My browser times out on much of the Logos site (the only one I have a problem with, of course). I just hit the 'stop loading' and move on.

Whatever happened to the old goal of fast loads (ie minimizing side-calls). Logos also still has a lot of old code where they try to load and Opera reports no certificate.

Staring at that made me glad I never tried to learn Ajax. I got fed up with webdev right after HTML and CSS got married, my hesitant forays into PHP and a bare few lines of Java debugging don't really count, I'm pretty certain I couldn't to an XML stylesheet transform anymore either.

On Topic:

I will try to ignore it, or hit stop, which does fix it (thanks Denise). But it makes my eyes burn!

There does appear to be a problem with the javascript on this page - possibly RefTagger getting in the way of the AJAX call to Faithlife for the rating. But I'm not sure why that would affect your browser only.

Does the Faithlife review window at the bottom of the page show up correctly?

Yes, there is a box for reviews on the bottom.

It's just that non-existent blink tag which is still blinking.

I was thinking it was due to some ad blocking, but Logos is the one site I don't block ads from... so there's that.

I am not a huge fan of ajax except that it's such a useful way of doing ui, so I can't quite get away from it. It is the only technology that will let you have a unified codebase for ui--even Java isn't there anymore with the advent of mobile. [see jQuery UI & jQuery Mobile]

Even though I'm not a web developer by trade, I find myself creating tools that use html for ministry and even for my day job.
