Home page over 30 seconds to load

Normally the content of the "home" page within Verbum 5 takes well over 30 seconds to load. The Internet connection I am on is relatively fast, with regular download speeds of over 1MB/s. I have at times had to wait over 1 minute for it to populate.

Even if I turn off every single optional element of the home page, it still consistently takes 13-14 seconds to load an almost empty page (displaying only the Book of the Day, which cannot be turned off)!

Of course, the result of this is that I try to go to the home page as little as possible. It would be great if it could be redesigned to load instantaneously (as, for example, the Verbum Android app's homepage does).

Same problem here. Even worse, if my Logos 5 window is not maximised, and I maximise it after the home page downloaded, it restarts the download... adding another 30 odd seconds.

As best I can tell, the Android app displays whatever it had last downloaded immediately, without waiting to see if there is anything new. In the background it downloads new information, and inserts it into the homepage or updates the homepage as the new information comes in, but with no dead time (at least that is what my subjective user experience seems to indicate... I don't have any background info on how the app actually works behind the scenes).

That sounds like it would have its own disadvantages - one could find oneself reading some blurb on the home page only to see it disappear, for example.

I am familiar with many other programs that display news and such from the Internet with no apparent lag to the user. A think a design could be thought up that avoids these problems. I'm not sure how it would end up, but am just hoping that it can be done.

Same here, super slow and I have a pretty fast PC. Using Window as well.

You are lucky. I tried it yesterday with little RAM. It took 1 minute 50 seconds. I tried it today with a newly restarted computer and about 6 GB RAM free. It took 3 minutes 45 seconds. Though it's quite possible I lost track and it was actually 4 minutes 45 seconds.

Normally, I just click and switch over to Safari or Thunderbird.

I agree. Running Logos 5 on a fast windows computer with 8 gigs ram and a very fast internet connection. Just yesterday, I got so fed up I have disabled everything except release notes and resource updates. Does Logos realize that the slowness of the home page is so bad that many of us have chosen to no longer use it at all? Seems like it would be in their best interest to fix this. As others have said, I can load Google News or many other news laden sights, even facebook in 1/10th the time it takes the Logos home page to load.

BTW, I waited until the app had settled down from the startup procedures (checking for updates, syncing, etc) before I opened the home page. I'm sure it would be longer if I hadn't waited. I noticed from the logs posted that others didn't wait. However, I don't think that it should really matter either way. The homepage needs to be snappier---especially at start up, because loading it at start up is the default configuration.

The homepage needs to be snappier---especially at start up, because loading it at start up is the default configuration.

I would prefer a homepage which had the ability to set preset sections. Some content could be web based (I.e. Blogs and verse pic of the day), or none at all.

L5 was running on my 24'' second monitor with only one tab. Indexing had finished when I clicked the home button at roughly 20:57:00. While I waited Logos checked for updates and downloaded today's three Vyrso freebies, some 4MB.

The only application I had open concurrently was Chrome with three or four tabs. At first I didn't do anything at all except watching the whitespace were the homepage might sometime appear, then after some time I read a bit in the Logos forum and on wikipedia - nothing that taxes the system. Internet was responsive, I checked my WLAN-connection once and it claimed it had 150MB/s (as I write this it says 300), four of five signal strength bars.

The homepage is a (very) slick marketing tool for Logos... .and that's a good thing. It appears to be user sensitive in that different users see different homepage content, and that means that Logos is doing a number of things in the background (as an educated guess, things like: querying their own systems to determine what you already have, what your recent buying history is (to determine what you might be interested in buying now, and placing a SALE! sign on something for you), what's on your wish list, etc.). So.... they have to aggregate data about you, formulate an optimal homepage for you that also includes interesting tidbits from your library as well as marketing material, send it to you, and finally display it for you. When you look at it from that perspective, 30 secs isn't inordinately long. Unless, of course, you are less interested in spending money than in studying the Word.

I know from experience to start up Logos and then check my email in another space.

My 27in iMac has 3 screens full of 'Home Page' I have only ever moved off screen one by accident and then I have had unchristian thoughts about the design team.

I also don't know (yet) why this is happening, but I did note a surprisingly high number of web request timeouts to our sites (mostly CDNs) that should return results very quickly. Do you recall if you had a bad Internet connection when this was happening? Or some sort of firewall (that blocks requests via timeouts instead of immediate disconnections)?

no. But whatever the CDNs are - why do you want to download them in the firstplace? Maybe - since I'm a member of a number of faithlife groups - this just doesn't scale?

Mine is usually a 30-60 seconds...but I've never really seen that as a problem. I know it is gathering info from different locations and the homepage should really be called the home pageS, since it is typical for mine to have 4-12 pages of info, and if I've had any downloads, that can bloom to over 20 at times.

Hm. The homepage actually hasn't much content that needs to be downloaded - the handful of blog excerpts and such, all not very colourful, every major news site or portal (such as yahoo, or patheos if you want) will need to deliver much more content - and they load in seconds.

Trying to load the homepage makes Logos using high CPU percentages over a long time (however, the resource monitor doesn't show it requiring network connections or harddrive) - this is weird.

A little over 1.5 minutes in both cases. The computer was recently restarted and Logos had finished all initial tasks before I clicked the Home button.

Please check the startup as well. Both logs are full of "Invalid font height on font" and "No metadata found for resource" messages, that I don't remember seeing before. And while opening Logos always takes a long time, today was absurd. I began to fear a first time indexing. Turns out the app went idle for 5 minutes in the middle of first stage preparing!

Wow! I don't think I've ever seen more than 6 or 7, possibly 8. Mostly it's 2-3.

Actually, I have a 3 year old MBP and a 5 year old iMac. I don't use the iMac for Logos much... Its a little more for my kids now. When I do load to the homepage on that machine, it has fewer pages than does my MBP. And more on each page.

Took 37 seconds using a Verizon FIOS Turbo 80mb sec download w/ 6MB RAM. HOWEVER once it was loaded, I went back to my working layout and then return to the home page was virtually instant.

The download is too slow for some reason other than my very fast internet download speed. Once in my memory (or hard drive?) it delivers instant response.

That didn't even occur to me. All I was thinking was that I've never owned a laptop (or tablet or smartphone), and the smallest monitor I've ever worked with was the LC -- and even that was a loooooong time ago. So when someone says "20 pages" it doesn't naturally occur to me to consider that monitor size might have something to do with it.

One of the raison to disable the logging is have Logos 5 run faster on Mac !!!
