College kid looking for advice on giving a word about Memorial Day

Hi, folks,
This weekend my practicum is doing a whole service at a homeless shelter this weekend, in between worship and our sermon, I will be giving a short word about Memorial Day. I want to be sensitive to everyone because I some of these people will have emotions all over the place given their situation. Any advice how I should do this? Or any recommended words? Thx!

Speaking as a veteran and a pastor i would do a couple of things. 1. i would ask that all who served stand and be recognized and then sit down. 2 those who have lost someone in service to stand and then pray for them. i think that people forget that veterans get their own day on nov 11, and this is for those who have fallen. As for message suggestions, themes of sacrifice are obivious. I might talk about David and Jonathan, companions in battle, loyalty, etc. You could parallel with the armor of God and how we battle flesh and blood, not physical.

Rick, how about a word on the memorial stones from Joshua 4? You could draw parallels to Memorial Day, talk about why it's so important to remember for future generations, etc.

Holy Spirit bless and undergird you Rick. Just about any battle from the Bible that God fought on behalf of His people would be good.
You could always preach Dan 3 interweaving Gospel/Paul's writings too. Tell them all that Jesus was and is in the fire with them and "Our God is Able".
That sermon is fit for everyone imho.
Also, 2nd Chronicles 20 has great material in it too.
Blessings,
Joshua

I would keep it short and sweet. They're about to hear a sermon, so this doesn't need to be a sermon. Good advice from the others above about honoring and respecting those who have served or lost someone and praying for them. You don't need to do much more than that. They're hungry and will be looking forward to the meal afterwards.
