Disclaimer: I'm not the only one in these forums to be a Habs fans. So, take it easy you who are offended at such a use of a forum - Speaking of "forums"
I understand what you mean, but coming from a state where people pray for Alabama and Auburn football constantly, I find it in poor taste to pray for such things in general, and I am afraid that it will set a precedent of people asking for prayer requests on the forums for similar nonsense. Especially in light of recent prayer requests for a forum member who really needed it, I find the title to be disconcerting as well, even though you did put the smiley, as I was afraid something was really wrong with someone. That's just my opinion, and it is certainly not the end of the world.
I would point out though that you knew that it would offend people, so your instincts were probably telling you not to post it in the first place, which you should have gone with.
Joseph, I also live in Alabama...but I'm a transplant. I can attest to the rabidly fanatical nature of the Auburn-Alabama rivalry. I used to work with a bunch of ladies at a school in Huntsville a few years back. We all went to lunch one day, and the football thing came up at the table while we were waiting for our food. Genteel ladies who were otherwise great friends suddenly became hostile with only a slight nod at civility. They kept ratcheting up the tension at the table, and after a few minutes of it with no release valve in sight, I took matters into my own hands. I got up and went around the table collecting all of the knifes. It was meant as a joke, and I thought (hoped) it would break some of the ice. I pretty much got nothing but cold stares...and I wondered if maybe I should have picked up the forks as well. [:S]
I always get out of the argument when asked "who do you go for?" (there is no doubt what this question means) by saying I'm from Louisiana (New Orleans) and that I don't have a dog in that fight. While I usually sense that I am receiving a demotion on the spot, the reply is sufficiently Southern that I am not immediately afforded the option of being ridden out of town on a rail--at least so far. [:P]

LOL, that's too funny. To be clear, I am an Alabama fan; I just don't take it too seriously. With that said, I do ask, since you are an LSU fan, that you not reply to any more of my posts. You are dead to me. [6]

Well, I'm a Yankee born and bred. I like Indiana University in basketball and Purdue University in football. Are you going to throw me out on my ear? [:D]
Joseph...did you hear something? [:^)]
I wonder who I should root for. [:O]
Joseph...did you hear something?
Nah, Purdue can't hang in the SEC. They are probably better matched against Indiana University's basketball team. [:P]
P.S. I really don't care for sports, but this trash talk is kind of fun once you get used to it!

Roll Tide!
Dear Pastor Joe,
sorry to offend YOU, but have you read your own paper recently? As as matter of fact today? You'll note that the NCAA men's golf team has advanced to the national semi's. hum? I wonder how many Southern Baptists were praying for them to advance. Hum? I wonder how many Southern Baptists and or Methodists were praying for SMU to win?
I just came back from my dentist and a very able quote from Dr. Murray (golfing buddy) is very apropos, "take a pill."

I won't get upset if you won't. I'm gonna pray they lose.[:D]
btw: Alabama & SMU I know but who are the "habs"?

First of all I wasn't offended, but I think some might have been. Second, as I seriously don't care for sports, I had no idea about the golf team (it took entirely too long to figure out what SMU stood for, even looking at their website), but if anyone was praying that a team won, then I don't think it was appropriate. Praying for safety or that God would be glorified in the sportsmanship would be appropriate in my mind, but that is just my opinion. I thought I made that clear in the beginning (that it was just my opinion), and I am not sure why you seem so angry. My first thought when I read the title was that someone was in the hospital again.
I don't take chill pills anymore; they made me lethargic.
I pray that both teams play the rest of the game well and in a virtuous manner.
I hope that that Canadiens win. Call it patriotism. (In Canada, most hockey-crazy Canadians will cheer for any Canadian team in the playoffs if it's the only Canadian team in the playoffs. I am not hockey-crazy, but I am mildly patriotic.)
5-4 MTL.

Who cares anyway? Indiana schools concentrate more on what schools were established to do—education, not training grounds for professional sports teams.

As it says in some Logos book or another: "That's what fans of losing teams say." [:D]

No, that doesn't seem right. Do you have a credible source for this, or are you just making stuff up?
Just to be clear, I am sure you know that I was kidding, but I want to be sure. Purdue might have a fantastic football team, but I would have no idea. I have absolutely no idea about college sports. The only reason I like Alabama is one of my former students, Marquis Maze, used to play for Alabama. That made it exciting for me. I doubt I will watch next season.
5-4 so far. Man what a game!
But in all honesty. Some will pray for the Habs, some will pray for the Rangers, and probably a lot don't really give a rip. What is God's will in this game? I have no idea.
One of my most favourite doctrines is the doctrine of Providence. RC Sproul has a decent book - The Invisible Hand - that is quite good, but after the game some will say God answered their prayer, some will say God didn't and His will was for the Habs to win (for His greater glory?) and some will say, "who cares?" and still others will say, "Does God really concern himself [gender] about this?" I guess I'm in the last camp. I love the game, my older brother was drafted by the Rangers and played for the the Kitchener Rangers, I played for their junior team (Green Shirts) but I don't pray for the Habs or the Rangers to win. As a matter of fact - I don't pray for any team. I just enjoy sports.
Anyway, the third period is just about to begin. So go Habs go and beat dem Rangers- if it's God's will

I agree completely, and all I really meant was that the thread title was potentially alarming. No big deal.
I think it's ok to pray to win, if you don't have money on it. Unless you're a 'monetary blessings from on high' type person. Then it'd be ok (since obviously you haven't earned it).
I heard an illustration by David Jeremiah on Monday about a Missionary who received 10 dollars in the mail. She was so excited and blessed the Lord. She gazed out her window and saw what looked like a beggar leaning against her dwelling and decided to put her new found fortune in an envelope. After sealing it, she wrote in large letters - DON'T DESPAIR.
She then dropped the envelope out the window. Gazing downward she saw the man pick up the envelope, open it and then disappear. Several hours later she heard a knock on her door. Upon opening it and to her surprise she saw the beggar. He handed her an envelope and to her amazement there was 60 dollars in it. She asked, "what's this?" He said. "Lady, that 10 dollars paid 6 to 1 on DON'T DESPAIR and here's your 60 dollar cut."
His (Jeremiah's) point? God chooses the outcome despite our best laid plans.
So did the Habs win because people prayed for them? I have no clue.
So if you can answer that and still be realistic - I'm all ears.
Canadiens won 7-4.
My first thought when I read the title was that someone was in the hospital again.
Agreed. A heading like "Urgent prayer request" should be saved for when there actually is an urgent prayer request, otherwise people will start ignoring such threads.

[Y] Even with the smiley face it was a bit misleading. I quickly realized after reading the first post that it was tongue-in-cheek, but I wouldn't want to miss a legitimate prayer request simply because I've become desensitized much the way modern constant-bombardment advertising has done.
Ok here's a real live situation.
I went to the dentist yesterday. It turns out I have a small crack (from eating celery of all things) in one of my lower teeth. I had four options. I took the crown option and my dentist concurred.
Now the crown will cost close to $1,000.00. Don't have that. The office sent a request to my insurance provider to see if this will be covered or to what extent it will be covered.
Knowing that the insurance company has their guide-lines on what to cover and how much to cover it's not a matter open to discussion with them.
So what if I pray that God will cover 100% of my crown expense, but the ins. co. has already determined not to cover any amount? Was it God's will not for me to get a crown? Was/is it His will for me to choose one of the other options or do I really need to pray at all, after all it is what it is?
So if you're looking for a rescue for this thread, would you please pray for me. Pray that the pain in my mouth, minor as it is, would be soothed or a least that the Lord would give me the thresh hold to cope with the pain (AKA, Tylenol). I have to wait for the crown until early August so it's going tobe a bit.
So I'll close this thread off with that. Many apologies to those who were mildly taken back with the Title on the thread. Lesson taken. [:)]
Does your dentist offer a ___ days same as cash option? Mine offers 6 months through Care Credit. Wait too long and your crown may also need a root canal—another grand (that's $1,000 for non-US readers [8-|]).
Did pray, BTW
@ Jack,
I don't know. I should ask if I have to pay a huge amount. Thanks for the advice The root canal was one of the options. The others were, pull it, but it's an important tooth for biting down or replace the filling which may crack the tooth even more and then we're back to either rootage or crownage.
Thank you for praying.
