First Time Indexing Ongoing Problem

Hello there

My Logos program generally runs very well with no problems. A few days ago however, it decided to to go into "First-time Indexing' mode which never seems to finish. I am attaching the most recent log files that the program has created. Do they mean anything to anyone?

Any assistance would be gratefully as I am working on two essays that need to be completed ASAP.

Many thanks

Sue

I am not sure if the attachments are inserted correctly - I will give it a try anyway :-)

Sue - I am on my iPad, so I can't open those log files. In all probability, you will need to enable logging (it's turned off by default) so that you can get a logos.log file. Can you give us more details? What OS? what version of Logos? Have you restarted your computer?

    Thank you Alabama

I am using Logos 5. I have had it installed for quite some time and it usually has no problems at all. A few days ago I downloaded some new resources and for some reason it went into 'First-time' Indexing mode. This mode gets to a high percentage of completion (I am not sure if it actually completes) before automatically restarting the process all over again. At the moment it is on 26% again.

I am unable to access the search features in my Library. For example, it will not search my collections, I presume that is because it is indexing.

I found the logs I posted in my 'Logos Log Files' in my documents. I will have a look at the Wiki to find out how to 'enable logging' and post some more logs.

    Thanks for your help

    Sue

I suggest that you run a disk diagnostic program to be sure that your disk is not failing. I'm tracking down a similar problem on my system.

    Thank you MJ

I wondered if it was my computer that was the problem. It looks like it might be. My trusty old laptop has served me well so far but has been running very slowly lately. I will run a program as you suggested. Do you have any recommendations?

Would it still be helpful to upload more log files?

I am in the process of downloading L5 onto my husband's laptop just so I can keep working.

I really appreciate the advice and help and am so grateful that we can run Logos on more that one computer :-)

Start Logos with CTRL key held and upload LogosIndexer.log after the crash.

Sue, you could try the instructions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2641432  Go to this page from another computer, or print it out.

    1. You should be scanning C: drive.

    2. In your situation, you should check BOTH "Automatically fix file errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".

    3. Get ready to make an EXACT note of any error messages that may come out in the scan. You might even want to prepare a digital camera to photograph the screen.

    All the best.

Thanks Dave and Lee for your replies.

I will follow those up tomorrow. I think having the camera ready to capture any error messages is a great idea. Thanks for the hint.

If old laptop has a hard drive, one thought is replacing hard drive with Solid State Disk (SSD).  Personally used Clonezilla (Live CD) => http://clonezilla.org/ to partition a new 500 GB Sata III SSD to match existing hard drive partitions, then copied partitions from 320 GB hard drive to SSD.  After starting up laptop with SSD, used Windows to create another disk partition following by using wiki => http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers to custom install Logos 5 and Verbum in new disk partition.  SSD noticeably improved Windows and Logos 5 responsiveness on an Intel Core 2 Duo.

... am so grateful that we can run Logos on more that one computer :-)

+1 [Y] Thankful for more than one computer [8-|] plus Thankful can use Logos 5 and Verbum at the same time on one computer [:D]

    Keep Smiling [:)]

No its not! Please use the screen capturing features of your operating system, or use JING.

Not quite. CHKDSK runs with "/f" switch on the system disk, only in DOS mode on restart. No screencap programs work then, unless you're on VM (which she is not) or you have one of those specialist hardware rigs (which she does not).

    Hello there

I enabled logging and let the program run for a couple of hours and here is the log. It is still first time indexing.

    5074.Logos 16 June 2014.zip

Next I will scan the hard drive as suggested

Grateful thanks for the help from the Logos community

I'm sorry Sue, but there's no Index log here. Do you see one in the Logos Logging folder? If you see it, please post the log file. Otherwise something else is causing the index to not run in which case I would advise calling us at your earliest convenience. 800-875-6467.

Thank you everyone for your assistance and suggestions. I have really appreciated it.

In answer to your question Lee - The problem seems to have resolved itself as the 'first time indexing' process ceased restarting and  finally got to the point of completion. A new resource downloaded and indexed with no problems. The search function seems to be working correctly again[:)]

I have not tested it extensively however, as I downloaded Logos on my husband' s laptop and am using that for the next couple of days while I get my essays completed. Logos is running with no problems on his computer and so fast - wow I am loving the speed.

When I get the chance I will spend time trying to work through the issues with Logos on my computer and will report back again then if there are ongoing problems.

    Thanks again everyone

    Sue

I'm not glad to hear it, because it's gonna happen again when she least expects it.  The logs are really no good, because they don't specifically pin point what the problem is.  All they say is: It could be A), B), C), or D) or something else - figure it out on  your own pretty much.  If one thing doesn't work then try another or buy a new computer even if the one you have is a year old.  I think Logos needs to get the indexing problem fixed once and for all, instead of having this whole indexing process crashing every time for virtually "unknown" reasons.  I've done "first time indexing" way too many times and quite honestly, this problem is getting old.  One thing I've notice and it WOULD BE worth looking at, is the way Vyrso books are made - because believe or not, when I've had the problem reoccur it happens right after I download some random Vyrso book.  Some vyrso books have this PDF looking front cover and it's slow to scroll down. Maybe Logos should get rid of those covers because maybe this is causing something that leads to the file not indexing correctly and hence triggering the "first time indexing."

I really don't know, but I'm sure it happens after I've downloaded some random Vyrso book.  About two weeks ago I had to do a "first time indexing" all over again, and it's really annoying.  So something needs to be done to be able to pin point with accuracy the real cause not just some "Log" that tells you one of _____ many options could be the problem.

Anyway, hopefully Logos 6 will get rid of the indexing problems once and for all.

Yes, I agree with you that there may be some underlying cause for the indexing errors that is not a user problem. I've said as much in a couple of other threads.

If you have a good explanation or theory, why not start a new thread and help Logos track it down?
