Is a Sermon Worth 7 cents or $240?

The Logos blog is pushing classic sermons. The normal sermon price is 14 cents, but for a short time, you can purchase at the rate of 7 cents per sermon.

That made me wonder.  Apparently in the 1st century, some evangelists charged for the good news.  Probably more than 7 cents, though slaves weren't rolling in drachmas.

On the forum, pastors appear to use a minimum of a day to prepare a sermon. That's what my dad said too.  So, let's say $240 cost of production. Add in travel expenses (for the Apostle Paul's competitors ... Paul made tents).

So, would you pay $240 for a sermon?  Probably not.  What if you ratcheted the bidding downward, where would the average pew-sitter end up.  $20. Doubt it. $10?  Here in Sedona, that's max for similar events.

Of course, we're talking eternal life.  Ok. 7 cents.

I'm pretty sure you can get all those sermons for $0.00 if you want.

You're paying 7 cents a sermon for the privilege of loading it into your Logos library.

I should also add, I'm sure the vast majority of the pastors represented in the bundle would be thrilled that their sermons can be disseminated for practically free. Many pastors want to give away their sermons to any interested persons (e.g. John Piper) because they don't want to peddle the gospel.

[I am not saying that by charging for a sermon that a pastor is peddling. I know of two pastors I respect who charge for their sermons. These things do cost money to "produce", "store" and "distribute" -- so covering those costs is fair. Even though Piper gives away his sermons, it still takes a lot of money to run Desiring God]

FWIW, I think individually they are worth 7 cents a piece.  But as a bundle, there is very little chance that I will use all of them over my lifetime of ministry.  Furthermore, I would rather alacarte by author.  Some authors I will want over others.  As it stands.  I have most of the sermons that I would ever want in the collections I have.  Adding more doesn't interest me at $240.
