E-ink device for Logos App Android

Unfortunatelly so far there is no convenient e-ink device out of the box (ie. min 6" display, full Android 4)

I'm pretty sure the Logos app no longer works on Android 2.1 but it's been a while since I looked at it. You might be able to dig up an older version of the Logos app and get by for a while.
I played around with possibilities about a year ago when I got a Nook Touch for $20 on clearance. But for many people the slowness of loading books/apps even rooted on a Nook Touch/Glowlight is not worth the trouble of trying to get it working. It is nice in theory to access Kindle and Nook books on one device. And perhaps worth the trouble if you need to read outside. Otherwise, there are many options under $100 for 7" Android tablets that run the latest or one revision back of the OS and won't be a hassle/stop working whenever something is updated.

This is correct
The current release requires Android 2.3 and up

I agree, in my opinion the only reasonable choice for reading Logos books is device with Android 4.x - e.g. Onyx Boox T68.
E-ink is only acceptable choice for those of us working all the day with PC and thus having eye strain in the evening. For example I can read on my Kindle 3 (e-ink) 2 hours without problem but after 20 min of reading book in Logos on IPad 4 I feel strong eyestrain.
Bible study (working with languages, commentaries etc.) is of course best on PC with large LCD. It is not possible on e-ink device to work efficiently. BUT slowness of e-ink device is quite acceptable if it is used only for sequentional reading of Logos books (and taking occasional highlighting).

This article claims T68 has full open adroid 4 (no root necessary):

I own a Onyx Boox i62HD. That's a non-android e-ink device. I have exported books from the bible software and converted them to PDF in order to read them on my e-reader. I must say it's so much easier on the eyes to read from my e-reader as opposed to my notebook screen.I would consider buying the T86 if I didn't own an ereader yet.
Only thing with Onyx is that their support is not that well. It is a relatively small china-based company - as compared to major players such as Kobo, Amazon Kindle etc. There are some local dealers, such as one in the States, Poland and Germany. But these companies are even smaller, and it turns out for my device that release of firmwares with bugfixes has come to a hold. Also they promised to release support for TTS screen reading software, but it seems they changed their mind. www.mobileread.com has got a lot of info about these issues from onyx users.
It has turned silent probably because their main attention is on the newer android-based models. At one point also these - now new - devices will become out-of-sale products, and at that point they also might stop releasing firmwares on these models. But from a hardware standpoint I am satisfied with the reader, and I probably still buy one if it would be the best reader around as it comes to the specs.

The newest Oynx Boox in production, the C65 Afterglow, says that one can install various Android apps:
https://onyx-boox.com/e-book-readers-eink-onyx-boox/onyx-boox-c65-afterglow/
This would mean no rooting necessary. Any reason why this wouldn't work with the Logos android app?

Also, guys, what do you think about this? The new Kobo Aura HD has been used to run Android 2.3 via an external Micro-sd. This thing has 1Gz of processor. Can it run the full Logos android app?

Thanks for tip Bentley.
I googled little about C65 and it does not have Google Play to install apps. But it is possible to install apps via memory card.

Hi,
I bought an Onyx T68 specifically to be able to read my Logos rescources on an E-ink device. I just received mine and installed the Logos Bible app on it, my first impression is favorable, although the device is not very snappy everything seems to work. Page turning in the Bible app is fine most of the time, with a newly opened resource the first page turn sometimes takes a few seconds but that even happens on my Nexus 7 with some books. Highlighting functions as far as I can see. I will try it out in the following days and post an update when I find the time.

Here are some answers to questions I was asked regarding the Onyx Boox T68, they might be of interest.
1. How sharp is the text (as compared to a paperwhite for instance)?
My wife has a paperwhite, I'd say the text is as sharp as the paperwhite. The contrast of the Paperwhite seems slightly better when the frontlight is turned off (but only slightly), the screen of the T68 is a bit more yellow than the Paperwhite when the frontlight is off. With the frontlight on full strenght there is not much difference in contrast, only the color again is a bit more yellow, but I don't mind that very much.
Because of the e-ink screen there are some weird things happening. For example when you go to the library and tap on the i symbol, you do see the cover of the book but you do not see any of the text. I think that is because the normal background of that screen is all black with white letters. Strangely enough the Book Info screen on the T68 is completely white apart from the cover and the download/remove button. A bit annoying but no major problem. When you have 'the words of Jesus in red', the red text is slightly less sharp (becomes light grey), I've turned the red letters off in the app because of it.
2. How long does it take to do a Bible Word Study?
Starting a Bible Word Study takes 2 or 3 seconds (when connected to Wifi). A note on the Word study pie chart, you can distinguish between the main uses (dark and light grey), but not between the grey tones of the others, but that was to be expected.
3. With a book that is downloaded, is there a lag between page turns once it is downloaded or only initially? i.e., can you read at a normal pace without noticeable lag?
There is an initial lag for the first page, but after that it is mostly fine, every now and then you have to wait a little (but no longer than a second, hardly longer than physically turning a page of a book). As I see it now it shouldn't be problematic.
4. How do complex resources such as BAGD function (If you have a copy)
BDAG works all right, again there is a slight lag between some pages, but again no more than a second. One disadvantage of the e-ink screen is that you can't distinguish the blue hyperlinked text, but then when you know the resource you can guess what the hyperlinks are and if in doubt you just tap on it and find out quick enough.
5. If you could post a video somewhere there are lot of people that would love you!
I've never done that before for something like this and don't have time this week unfortunately. I might try it next week.
6. When using a greek text (say Robinson's Byzantine 2005) How long does it take to look up parsing information?
I've tried with UBS4, it takes 2 or 3 seconds, no longer than on my Nexus7.
Just as an aside, the touch screen is responsive enough but not as responsive as a tablet (e.g. Nexus 7). You do have to tap twice or thrice every now and then. One example is when you are in a resource and want to get back to the menu, tapping the upper left corner, the plastic edge of the screen gets in the way a little and you often have to tap more than once.
The software is still a bit rough, but from what I've seen so far I am not sorry I ordered it. It will be great to be able to read my Logos resources on the e-ink screen. It definitely seems the best option there is today for that.0 -
Thank you so much, Daniel!
That's very appreciated - I'm still on the fence shelling out about $250 (would buy BDAG twice or so), but your review helps me a lot!
Have joy in the Lord!

My T68 arrived yesterday. Everything seems to be good except one thing - my T68 does not work with External SD Card.
Question to Daniel M: Do you have External SD card and does your T68 work with it?
I found out, that T68 recognize EXTERNAL SD card (30 GB SANDISK ULTRA Class 10) [Settings --> Storage setting] but does not work with it. If I move installed app (like KINDLE or LOGOS) to SD card it means that the App is moved from memory (max 400 MB) to INTERNAL Sd card (max 2,2 GB).
I do not know how to force the device work with EXTERNAL SD CARD :-/ It is crucial feature for me, beacause ma LOGOS app has 6 GB od data.
Any suggestion appreciated.
Thank you.P.S. I have also tried to format again my SD Card in PC (FAT 32), but after inserting card to T68 everything is the same :-/

Hi Pavel, I don't have an external SD card yet, will get one today. I'll let you know how I get on with it.

Thanks for answer Daniel.
I have tried two apps designed for moving apps from Android device to SD Card (AppMgrIII and Advanced SD Card) but none of them worked. Both apps do the same as default tool for moving app , i.e. they are able to move app from memory to Internal SD Card, but no choice for selecting external SD Card as destination :-(

I wonder if this article would help:

Hmm, maybe, but in my opinion this solution would be helpfull in case the external SD card is available for OS.
Problem of T68 is in my opinion that there ara three "storages": (1) memory, (2) internal storage (internal SD card) and (3) external strorage (External SD card). But typical Android phone/tablet has only two "storages": (1) internal memory and (2) external SD Card...
So I would expect at least some switch for changing between internal and external SD card, but I did not found anything like this. Nonetheless it seems weird to me if ONYX-BOOX manufacturer provide slot for external SD Card and device had no option to use it....

Hi Pavel,
Well, I've got an SD card and got exactly the same behavior. I've been googling around a bit and apparently this behavior is not unique for the T68. It all depends on the app whether you can move things to the external SD card. I guess Onyx only thinks of books and pdf to store on the external SD, I noticed an option in settings to scan the external SD for books. But an app like Logos Bible app doesn't work that way unfortunately...
I guess we'll have to wait until someone finds a way to root the device, then it should be possible to somehow link the Logos directory to the external SD. I found this article where it was done for another device also produced by Onyx: http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/bible-apps/74-logos-bible-app-on-an-e-ink-device
It's a pity, but I don't need to have my whole library on the reader so I'm still quite happy to be able to read Logos resources on it.

It seems, you are right Daniel. I just tried to copy few .mobi books to external SD card and if I left both checkbox (in Settings - User Preferences --> Only scan books folder on ...) UNCHECKED then these books are available in Library.
Well, let's hope someone root this device one day or ONYX BOOX upgrade their firmware...
I can live with only part of my LOGOS library stored in T68 too, but it would be nice to have all library off line :-)I noticed two next minor drawbacks:
1) Turning to next page in Kindle and LOGOS left due e-ink technology some residue of previous page visible slightly under text (in built-in app for reading there is possible to change refresh rate, but not for external apps).
2) Device connected via USB cable is not visible in my Windows 8.1 (I can see it in Device Manager but do not see disk in File Explorer). But on my older system with Win XP is everything OK... (Does not tried Win 7 yet).
Pavel

Connecting T78 to Window 7 via USB is only partially successful: I can see internal SD card as disk but not external SD card in File Explorer.
So the best solution IMHO is to use Win XP or connect SD card directly to PC via card reader (using adapter mikro SD - normal SD).

Thanks so much for posting this. I've been looking at purchasing an e-ink display for Logos for some time. Do you remember how much usable space there was on this device out of the box? Was that "internal storage" fully available at new?

Hallo Mark,
Internal memory
Total: 496 MB
Available on new T68: cca 400 MBInternal SD Card
Total: 2,27 GB
Available: 2,27 GB (empty, i.e. fully available)More I use T68 more I am satisfied [:)] It is good reader for not only ebook's formats like mobi, epub etc. but also for PDFs. And to my suprise DOC files are also excelently readable!! And of course LOGOS & KINDLE - main reason for me to buy it...
There are minor drawbacks but IMHO nothing fundamental (except that external SD Card is not available for Apps including LOGOS)
P.S. Just installed DROPBOX app an it is fully functioning too.

Hi Pavel, I've got Windows 7 and my pc doesn't recognize the internal nor the external storage, but I should say that I have the same problem with my Nexus 7. My solution for that is using ES File Explorer which enables a WLAN connection, which is perfect for copying files from the PC to the device.
I also noticed some ghost image every now and then in the Bible app, but when you flick back and forth one more time it disappears.
As you say, the device isn't perfect but just like you I am very satisfied with it!
Here is some feedback regarding other apps:
- I tried to install Quickoffice, Google's office suit, but that didn't work for some reason, I might try another office suit some other time.
- I installed the Accountable2You app which works fine.

Thanks Pavel. I'm very tempted. What's the battery life like? Nothing like a Kindle, I'm sure. How easy is it to power the device off completely to avoid any power draw. How long does it take to restart when completely switched off?

Hi Mark,
It is very easy to completely power off the device, just hold the power button for 2 seconds and tap shut down button that pops up. To start it back up it takes about 40 seconds.
I've been using the device for 2 days with the front light mostly OFF, WIFI mostly ON and the battery is still on 75%. It is interesting, it seems that the WIFI is switched off when it goes to sleep mode (default after 3 minutes), did you find that as well Pavel? Depending on whether you have WIFI on or use the frontlight my guess is the battery might last about a week. But that's only a guess.
0 -
Thanks Daniel for tip - copying e-books to SD Card from PC with ES File explorer (via WiFi) is much easier.
As for WiFi it goes automatically OFF while device is in sleep mode. I think it is for saving energy (if I forgot Wifi ON on my Kindle 3 life span of battery was greatly reduced)
I use T68 extensively many hours a Day, WiFi ON but with front light mostly OFF. After 2 days I was low on battery and have to charge it. Hoping for much better duration of battery while on "normal" using...

Thanks for link Daniel.
But I hesitate to root T68 too - because of reportedly extremely long time of external SD card mounting.0 -
I have a setup on my Kobo Aura HD where Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) is installed on an SD card, and I then run it off the card. I am interested in your experiences with the Onyx Boox T68. The Aura HD and the T68 have very similar specs and the same size screen. I don't have the external SD card problem, since everything is simply partitions of the one SD card I use (which is 32 GB). Logos runs pretty well for me overall. Sometimes it takes two or three taps to turn a page, but that seems to happen with the T68, too. I don't have that ten minute wait, though, with that setup to use the external SD card. Most apps I want to use are compatible with Gingerbread. I think there's only one or two that no longer support Gingerbread. As long as Logos supports Gingerbread, I'm okay.
I see that the T68 is available on Amazon (USA) for $199. If that external SD card problem can be fixed, I could be tempted. Since the T68 runs Ice Cream Sandwich, app compatibility should be better. And, since it runs Android natively, I don't need a root setup to run Logos like I do for the Kobo. The Kobo is a nice device, but I don't care much for the Kobo bookstore.
I'm interested to see how the T68 holds up over time. Initial reports are encouraging overall. I've seen the Earl website, but that's more expensive since it has a number of capabilities that a typical e-Reader wouldn't need. I just think that E-Ink is the ideal medium for the Logos app, because it is basically about text!
Thank you for sharing your T68 experiences.

Here is a link to a video review of the T68 that I just made showing the performance of the Kindle and Logos Bible apps. It's the first time I've made a video like this so it's not perfect but it hopefully gives an impresson.

Great video Daniel! Very helpful IMHO for everyone here who has questions concerning T68 & LOGOS app.

Thanks a lot. Very helpful, and decent performance!

Yes, Daniel, thanks for that video. It was very helpful. The T68 does well, from what I see.

Thanks Daniel. Great video review. Seeing that the T68 runs Logos so smoothly I just ordered one. Seems like the perfect device for reading Logos books!

Very interesting thread about possibility to swap internal and external SD card on T68 - so external SD Card works instead of internal:

I am curious about boot time - autor does not post this info yet...

So, after swapping, external and internal SD, and with about 5GB of Logos Bible resources and 8GB total on my class10 SDCard I have to wait 15 minutes for the SDCard to become available.
