How can I open a book so it fills the screen each time immediately?

Pardon the remedial nature of this post, but I wonder how I can open up a book in my library so that it doesn't just take up ONLY the right column of the page (as it does now) and instead fills the entire screen every single time I open and close it again.

I am continually surprised by how some of the basic functionality I expect just isn't there in Logos during study.

When one opens a book, the option to have it always open to where you left off (without setting a bookmark) and having it fill the screen (without additional keyboard shortcuts or having to drag the border to the left so it does fill the screen) doesn't seem too much to expect, right?

I am using Logo 5.x within a Surface Pro (original...yup heat and all) on Windows 8.1.

Come on developers...think like basic folk like me please (on the offchance, extremely remote that any developers might actually read this post).

Who doesn't think the basic Logos user interface should be improved and made easier to use please?

If you're really talking about filling the screen (as opposed to filling the Logos workspace), then right-click instead of left-click when opening the book, and select "open in a floating window". Then maximize the window with one click on the maximize icon.

If you merely mean filling the Logos workspace, then drag the title or book cover icon to open the book and drop it in the middle of the Logos workspace. As long as that workspace is already empty or has only tabs that fill up the entire space (which seems to be your preferred mode of working anyway, so it'll probably be the case), then it will open the book to fill the entire space.

Thanks Rosie. I do mean filling the entire workspace as a default when I open the book please.

I want to do this every time without additional steps please. Your method works great but imho, I should not have to do this every time I want the book I just closed and want to read again another time.

Sigh. I confess I want the reader part of Logos to operate like the vastly inferior Amazon Kindle app or hardware would.

I do appreciate the tool Logos is...I just wish it thought more about me the common user as it develops.

Once you get the resource occupying the whole screen, go to layouts, Name it, and drag that layout to shortcuts bar. Wah Lah [:)]

I agree with Josh that even though there might be complex workarounds in the UI for what he wants to do, there should be a simpler way to do it.

Suggest creating a layout with Library that fills the entire screen. One click in Library on resource title opens to last place and fills screen.

In Program Settings, can change "At Startup Open to" your Library layout.

Library Cover View has Recent sort option. Library has Last Accessed column that sync's across devices.

Personally have a short cut for "v:Collections + Library" layout that opens two tabs, which is highlighted in screen shot:

Layout with resource open remembers resource location when layout was created or last updated.

Logos is not designed to be a reader app. Vyrso fills that role. I won't defend Logos UI on a number of points but I will defend Logos being a multi-panel study tool vs. Vyrso being a single panel reading tool.

If someone has a smallish screen (e.g., a 12" laptop), multi-tabs in a single full-window tile might make more sense than using multiple tiles. The fact that there's a shortcut icon for the "1 Tile" layout on the top of the Layout menu shows that Logos agrees this is a perfectly normal way to use the desktop app.

And the fact that they have Reading Mode (F11) shows that they do anticipate people using it for just reading some of the time, even though it has a multitude of other features.

So to answer JoshInRI's original request, you might find that Reading Mode suits your purposes for when you just want to open a resource to read it. It's nice to not have to use two different apps for access a single library. And as far as I know, there isn't even a Vyrso app for Windows/Mac yet. If you don't own a portable device, then, that isn't an option.

I agree Rosie that Logos can be used as an eReader and I agree that there are cases where a single screen is desirable - for me it is usually clause visualizations. However, Logos is not designed as a reader app. To make its default behavior that of a reader app would disturb more users than it would help.

Opening resources as full-screen shouldn't be the default behavior, and I don't think Josh was asking for it to be the default behavior. But it could be made possible to set that up as one's own personal default, and I would agree it's worth asking for that. Others have asked for more control over the seemingly random way that Logos now opens new resources. E.g., set up a pane as the "always open new resources here" pane, so it doesn't mess with other panes that you've carefully arranged with single tabs for tools or guides. Or assign particular panes as "Bible pane"; "commentary pane"; "other resources pane" etc. (UserVoice request). If Logos is ever going to address any of these requests, they might as well also allow people to do things like "remember position/size of this resource [or all resources] last time I opened it" or "always open this resource full screen".

Or bad eyes and large font size.

Personally, I have dragged that icon to the shortcut bar.

Thanks everyone for your input. Some great suggestions and support in here. I do continue to hope a "remember position, font, and window size" option might come along. I read my books in chunks. Never occurred to me to use Vyrso the way it was suggested. I know about various clicks and layout drags (as I call them) but always have a "why didn't they imagine a common non-programmer like me might use the interface this way by default" mentality.

I went to college in the state (Brown) and get back there to visit every 5 years or so for reunions. I have very fond memories of RI, with all its quirkiness (calling milkshakes "cabinets" etc.).

Incidentally, the reason for my posting of a long list of recent Kindle purchases on the history of Christianity in New England is that I'm planning to lead a couple of friends of mine around on a trip to southern New England, with a focus on that history. And of course we'd spend some time in Rhode Island, learning about Roger Williams, the First Baptist Church in America (which was established "for the publicke Worship of Almighty God, and for holding Commencement in"; Brown Commencement, that is), and anything else I can discover that's of importance before we go on this trip. Do you have any suggestions?
