I need to do a search in my Logos Library on the laws that were in place in the different societies that were in existence at the time the ten commandments were written. I have a lot of journals in my library and I have Portfolio 5.21. Could someone possibly tell me how to do a search on this topic in Logos? Thanks, Susan Murphy
The key phrase you need is "Ancient Near East", or ANE. That's the term used to describe the societies around Israel at that time. So try searching for ANE laws, or looking in your library for ANE.
It's also worth being aware of some important resources for this sort of thing, in particular the Context of Scripture, which is in Portfolio. There are several ANE laws that are available for you to read, particularly in volume 2. Look for the sections entitled "Laws" in the table of contents (there are several different sections). Searching the rest of your library for the laws that you find (e.g. "Hittite Laws", "Laws of Hammurabi", etc.) will also yield dividends.
Also in Portfolio is Law Collections from Mesopotamia and Asia Minor, which contains more information that you could possibly ever need on the subject. If you looking for similar resources on different subjects, try the other volumes in that series.
Another source (but it's not in Portfolio) is ANET. It's not as detailed as COS, but it's a bit easier to find your way around.
Paste this "logosres:anet;ref=ANET.ANET_157" into your command bar.
If you don't own ANET, which you won't if you only have Portfolio with no add-ons, this will only give you a preview of the book; you'd have to go to the Logos website to buy it.
George,
I tried this with and without the quotes. So is there something wrong with the formula?
Thanks,
Susan Murphy
Susan, the correct way is without the quotes, but did you see my explanation of why it likely wouldn't work for you? You probably don't own ANET (Ancient Near Eastern Texts), but you can purchase it here if you want it: https://www.logos.com/product/3860/ancient-near-eastern-texts
The command is well-formed. George means to point you to Ancient Near East Texts.
Even if it isn't in your library, a preview of the book should have popped up.
Copy logosres:anet;ref=ANET.ANET_157 to the command bar, then press enter. It should work.
This may not directly answer your question, but a search on google using the terms "Ten Commandments" "Ancient Near East" turns up some useful information, which you could jump off on.
While I like The Context of Scripture, it groups the documents differently from ANET. In ANET the laws are grouped together rather than being separated according to the place of origin.
All these messages have really helped me.
Thanks.
